Wedding rings - does it matter where they are from?

Spangler, 29 September, 2009 at 17:04 Posted on Planning 0 32

I'm after a 2 - 3mm platinum band of some description. Had a look on the Tiffany's and Smooch website... Would love to get a Tiffany band but does it really matter?!

Can anyone recommend anywhere to get wedding bands? OH wants a really thick platinum band. Has anyone got experience of the Birmingham/ London jewellery quarters?

Ta muchly!

I've been to both Jewellery quarters and found Birmingham easier to find and navigate. I also found it cheaper.

All of our rings are from the jewellery quarter (all from Neweys). The prices are excellent and the metal is the same as anywhere, you are just not having to pay for the 'middle man' or the 'brand name'.

    My engagement ring is 2mm Platinum with a 0.25 diamond = £300

My wedding ring is 2.5mm Platinum = £180

I don't think it matters where you get your rings from at all. The most important thing is that you have one you really love, afterall you're going to wear it forever!

We both wanted platinum bands and I did have a peak on the Tiffany's website and to be honest, their prices didn't seem that different to ones we'd been looking at on the high street! In the end I got mine from Ernest Jones and OH's from Fraser Hart. I don't have any experience of the Birmingham jewellery quarter but can thoroughly recommend Fraser Hart (we went to the Cambridge branch).

    HTH.

    Hi

Me and OH went to the jewellery quarter in Bham - it was well worth it we were going to have a look for ideas and prices compared to the shops.... The first few shops in the jewerllery quarter were just as expensive as in shops in the high street but we went around the corner and kept looking and found afew shops that were wholesalers and retailers and we found our rings abit cheaper than in the shops - we had a great service and as it was really really hot when we went the man said if they need re-sizing at any point to just come back and he will sort it for us! def worth a look in my opinion.

    Hope that helps!!

Serafina, we've also ordered our wedding rings from Neweys! Thought the service and pricing was excellent.

OH bought my ER from Hatton Gardens, London. I prefer the Birmingham jewellery quarter though (we have lived in both London and Brum, I'm a Brummie so may be biased though).

We ordered online which was much cheaper than anywhere on the high street (didn't want to trek to London or Brum)

I was really pleased with the price and service we got.

    Oh, forgot to say-

One of the reasons that my weddign ring was so much cheaper in the jewellery quarter was because they price each ring individually based on its weight rather than like on the high street where each style has a set price. My fingers are tiny (H) so my ring price was also tiny!

Darnit - I have fat sausages for fingers. My ring would therefore cost a flippin' fortune. Can you get lipo on your fingers??!

I'm a Neweys ring girl too, mine is gold though set with diamonds, for £340 my oh got his from a shop across the road the gold centre i think it was called, he wanted a bit fat platinum one, but the prices have gone up so is expensive. The jewllers suggested palladium its a similar sort of metal but much much cheaper. It hasn't been carated or whatever they call it yet but we were told they will be doing it soon so the price will then go up. Oh ring was 8mm d shaped palladium for around £230.

Birmingham Jewllery quarter is brill so many shops, i took my big sis with me who is ring mad and she was like a kid in a sweet shop!!! (bit like me when i went to dublin and saw all the pubs ha ha but that is another story)

I'm in Northamptonshire - not far from Silverstone race track. Was saying to OLL we should have a Midlands meet. Will be cheaper than me going to Laaahndan!

Could never go to London, I'd be terrifed! Gosh i sound like a big wimp.

Ah don't worry petal - I'm a wee bit nervous too as lots of people on here already know eachother from previous meet-ups.

Tell you what, we could always go to a pub first, have a few voddies then go in all guns blazing! Not sure how well we'd be received but at least we'd be relaxed!!

Hey CG - went to the Tiffany store a coupla years ago - AMAZING!! You save loadsa money if you buy from there rather than here too!

A friend of a friend went there with her OH and he proposed. They then went to the Tiffany store to pick out a ring. Chose the ring they wanted - all fine. Got home and they had a call from Tiffany to say that the ring they bought was actually a coupla thousand dollars more than they paid for it and that they were very sorry but please accept the ring with their compliments!!

Why does stuff like that never happen to me?!!

Oh an Moony - yes I'm on the FB group Smiley smile x

Personally I don't think it matters where the ring come's from it's what it symbolises that matters.

For what it's worth Birmingham Jewellery quarter is well worth a look for rings, it's where my engagment ring is from and where we will get our wedding rings from, so much competetion means prices are good (especailly if you are prepaired to spend a day looking round) and so many of the shops have goldsmits etc attaced to them that alterations are often quick (couple of days) and you can get unique rings if you want.

Not much else to do until next year now!

Oooh Dress shopping soon though Spangles!!! maybe at the wedding fayre????? ? .. cant wait for your flash of it! is the band the one you sent me the link for?

its great being an OM but we are rather obsessed with the dvd at the moment, watched it about one hundred times. And Stella, she is amazing, but equally has become more and more confident and a bit of a noisy little madam (she loves to bark)!!! i will try to get pics on FB x

I don't think I'm going to look at dresses properly until Feb next year as I'm still in the midst of doing Fat Fighters (Weight Watchers) so want to lose another 4 stone before I look. We were thinking of going for the band I sent you the link for but they don't do any cheesy floor fillers so might go with the Blue Rinse Band - do rocky stuff and a bit of cheese. Love The Creatures who I told you about but I definitely need YMCA/ Blame it on the Boogie played along with The Killers/ Snow Patrol etc!!

Aaah I'd love to see your DVD missus! The photos I saw of you two were LUSH! So purdy! And cannie wait to see pics of Stella! x

Would recommend going somewhere where there is lots of competition, hence more opportunity for you to haggle. we bought ours from the laines in brighton. mine is plat, 2.5mm but really heavy and thick, 0.1 carat diamonds (they are teeny weeny!) for £600.

Oooh thanks BW! I'm prolly going to visit B'ham and try and haggle (not been too good at it so far!) OH's is looking at costing over £1k for the ring he wants and mine will be much cheaper. His argument is I don't need another ring 'cos I already have the engagement ring! If he wasn't joking he'd have a diamond shaped puncture in his chin!
