Wedding Underwear

blushing_bride, 26 January, 2012 at 21:39 Posted on Planning 0 23

Hiya,

I know this will probably have been asked before, but i've been looking online for underwear for the big day. My dress is strapless with sweetheart neckline. I dont have a whole lot going on up there (C cup) so not sure if I should be going for something that lifts or shapes or if a bra or basque is better? My dress is quite fitted to just past my hips so I am maybe thinking that if I have a basque on too i'm going to be suffocating.

xx

It depends on how your dress fits? Ive got a strapless gown with corset back and the lady in the shop advised me not to wear a bra as it has boning in it for extra support. I have tried it on with a bra and I feel like Im suffocating, much more comfortable without anything.

That's weird. The lady in my shop said brides should wear bras to keep ones boobs up in the right place. Works for me, because it means I get a bit of extra padding (i'm a C too) so my waist will look smaller.

Have you tried with dress on without a bra? Jump around and dance a bit and see what happens. You may find a basque is too restrictive if the dress is already fitted.

My dress was a sweetheart neckline, boned with a corset back. I'm a D & have NEVER gone braless, I dont even own anything strapless, yet, was able to go braless in my wedding dress!

I've just been to my first fitting today and I'm thrilled to say as an F cup I will be going braless! My dress has great support and I actually felt restricted and uncomfortable with a bra.

    Depends on the dress though.

Thanks! I'll give the shop a wee phone and see what they recommend. Sounds like its much easier to go braless, need to make sure I look like ive got something there though!

If you want to make sure you have something there you should go for the wonderbra ultimate strapless number! Its amazing!

I'm planning braless too - its not even that structured a dress but it is boned and I'm having it turned into a lace back which will improve the support. The alterations aldy said she could add support to the dress. i think I'd rather that than a separate bra, and probably would only cost the same as a decent strapless bra.

Shall have to remember to have a jiggle when I go on Thursday!

As the owner of a bridal shop I always advise my brides to wear a bra because:

    1. Small boobs - give extra padding, cuts down on alterations and generally creates a better shape (I have small boobs)

    2. Larger boobs feel great and supported initially but boning gets warm, and when it does (takes about 30mins to an hour) it softens. When it softens you lose the supportive aspect that you feel when you first put it on

    3. Larger boobs - lets face it unless they are cosmetic generally look at their best when supported

Oh and I generally advise a rather boring nude, smooth underwired bra. Nothing overly fancy. And if your dress has boning and structure DON'T get anything remotely corsetted / has boning over the ribs - it will rub against the dress and it will begin to hurt after a period of time.

One of my designers (who have some of the best internal structure available) sent us an advise note several years ago stating that we should get girls who intend to go braless to sign a disclaimer to show that we have told them it is not advisable.

I've been around bridal gowns for nearly 6 years, I've seen different levels of structure and have had our local lingerie shop owner in to give us professional advice about bra's / fitting etc in relation to our gowns.

No problems. If you're looking for cup boosting strapless bra recommendations (as a post baby D cup) I can highly recommend the range from Matalan - (TMI warning) my partner can't keep his eyes off that department when I'm wearing one of those!

Thanks for the info blairwitch - really don't know what to do now. My dress has a pretty low back so not sure if I could find anything that would give much comfortable support without straps or showing. I wear a 34D normally.

I will see how the dress fits now its been altered but will definitwly bear in mind what you say.

    Thanks

If the dress has been altered it is likely it won't accommodate a bra now as a bra will put your boobs in a different place. I wouldn't worry about it (as a D cup there shouldn't be too much weight) - however for anybody else in the same situation I would have two suggestions re the low back on the dress:

    1. Make sure you are wearing the right size of bra, if the back size is too big (as I frequently see in the shop) then the back of your bra will be riding up too high and coming over the top of your dress. So it may not be the back of the dress that is low - but rather your bra sits too high

    2. If the back of the dress is designed to be low then consider something like this to convert a normal bra http://www.asos.com/Magic/Magic-Low-Back-Strap-Converter/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=834185&cid=6748&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Black

It's funny you should mention this, I went and tried on a corset yesterday because I have quite big boobies, I'd not feel safe walking and dancing with no support! It was beautiful, all lace and soft and just stunning. I nearly sh1t myself when I looked at the price.. £130! And then another £36 for the under crackers!

Online is deffo the way to go if you're buying but get measured properly first and if it is a corset or basque type, get steel boned as they ar a million times more supportive than plastic!

My dress is V neck and is the same at the back and comes just below where my bra would sit so I'm not going to be able to wear one without it showing. I'd feel more comfortable wearing a bra but don't think I'll find one that doesn't show ☹️

Probably a stupid question, but as well as holding in place, does the Wonderbra also give some lift?? I'm a C Cup with a gorgeous corset top dress so want something that my boobs arent lost in!

Get the low back bra converter that I've posted a link to - and for anybody who has a boned wedding gown I will warn against getting corseted underwear. The two lots of boning will rub against each other and it can hurt

    Hi,

Thanks Blairwitch - the back is designed to be low, it sitsabout 3 inches lower than a wellfitted bra back. I have never found those conervetrs to be that effective, especially not when used with a strapless bra.

I guess I'll just have to see hpw the fitting goes on Thursday!

    Cheers
