Wedding Videos - Whats the best one youve seen and why????

LISA221010, 1 August, 2010 at 18:46 Posted on Planning 0 10

OK Ladies

Here goes!!!

I have now got it into my head (very late in the day with only 11 wks to go!!) that I really would like a wedding video done. Unlike my H2B who says he isnt bothered and would rather make do with the photos.

Things have moved on with videos since my first wedding nearly 20 years ago so what Im wanting to know is - whats the best one youve seen and what made it so special?

Ive seen ones with family and frienda all adding personal comments which I think is lovely to look back on after the big day but tell me what you all think!!!!!

This could help me make the final decision!!!

Thanks ladies

I have to say that I havent seen a 'proper' wedding video - Ive only been to a couple of weddings where the couple hired a videographer and never got to see the finished product, but I do love this little video that our photographer posted on his blog. Apparently the couple flew the videographers in from Canada, so I imagine they were somewhat pricey! But it shows in the video! I love the way the speeches run over the footage of other things that happened on the day, and the little cool touches like the lift doors opening to reveal the dress. I guess this isnt the proper video but I like that sections have been put to a song in this way.

    /video/****

    Always makes me blub too!!!

Ok this is a toughie as like you said they're are so, so many! For me it would have to be (apart from my own ? biased I know but I have to be lol..... FX Films 2010 showreel which features many different kinds of weddings giving an overall picture of his capabilities in a short 4 minute or so film (I know he's good anyway). See https://vimeo.com/12914074

For a full sample DVD I thoroughly enjoyed Ever After based in Sheffield featuring a fairytale castle, and a bride wearing an Ian Stuart bridal dress with a candlelit ceremony!

There are many talented videographers out there - mintyslippers being another firm favourite.

I do agree that wedding videos have moved forward with technology - (thank goodness), to those made in the 80's & 90's with those cheesy transitions - some of which I still see used today!!!!! xx

When I was planning in 2007/2008, www.oneandonlyfilms.co.uk/ were just starting out I think and a couple of hitchers booked them for their weddings. I absolutley LOVED their videos and really wanted to book them but they are in the Nort West and I am in Southampton so would have added on a lot of travel costs to the price. There doesn't seem to be any links on the website but their email is ***@***************.**.** - would be worth asking Ian for links to the video examples as they are fantastic.

I've only seen a couple of wedding dvds and one of them was my own (sadly my vog no longer does weddings)

what i loved about mine was that the speeches went over the top of the footage and were cut to the best bits. ( we had a full length film and he'd also done a highlights which was my personal fave)

i think it's very personal what you like and dont like, i'm not a fan of the personal comments from friends/family as i know a lot of mine would've been embarrassed or really drunk! also everyone said how nice it was that they hardly noticed the vog at the wedding so it was a totally natural video without people feeling 'watched'

i've seen some from friends weddings that i've been quite shocked how bad they are but obviously you never say anything! (i'm talking start wipes and proper cheesy stuff, loads of background noise not cut out etc etc)

the best thing i can suggest is complie a list of things you really like about the dvds and talk through with your vog what style you're after x

Most companies have recognised and moved on from the 'cheesy' approach of the 80's/90's - i.e. slushy and inappropriate music, ugly graphics and constant 'dreamy' fade-through effects.

There are plenty of 'cinematic' (to coin a phrase) example videos to be found, and these can (and do) seduce couples into believing they must be 'the best'. However there are some dangers of style-over-substance occasionally showing through in some of the more expensive/'higher end' work. The increasingly popular use of steadicam and tracks together with DSLR cameras can produce some quite exciting and visually impressive moments, but just like the Hollywood blockbuster there can be a lack of engagement beneath the flash.

Rehearsed/acted elements stick out like a sore thumb too, though these are usually more prevalent in overseas productions where cultures vary. I guess like everything else there are wedding video markets for different types of people. I am regularly told at consultations when asking clients why they have chosen us over other companies that it is the raw and genuine emotion in our demonstration footage that shines through, and after the wedding filming the Bride & Groom often comment on our quiet discretion and not distracting from their day. We quickly learned how to achieve both.

Kudos to those who can combine high-end production values while still recognising and recreating the genuine feeling of the wedding atmosphere in the end product - when we add steadicam and DSLRs to our arsenal for next season that is exactly the approach we are aiming for.

A friend of mine used www.shoot-it-yourself.co.uk its a company where you get sent the cameras and then shoot it yourself (hence the name) before sending off the tapes where they are then edited by professionals. For them it was a way of keeping the costs down a bit but still getting a video.

Sorry - a very old married here!

Get the video! It is the one thing I wouldn't change in a million years about our wedding... we were so lucky we got it done. Actually, we've just finished ours (our videographer was a family friend and died shortly after our wedding).

It's here if you want some inspiration??

Also, without the video - this wouldn't have been captured, a spur of the moment giggle between me and my Dad

Awww - thanks so much for sharing those clips of your wedding vid - just watched all three.

You are right - you cant recapture those moments on photos alone. The smile on you and your dads faces when you were dancing together is absolutely priceless.

Happy ending for me here is that me and H2B have decided definitely this aft that we are going to get the video done.

Weve contacted four or five VOGs this aft online and a two have phoned back to say they are available so we are going to see one next week who says he has worked with our photographer before and also knows our venue so Im really excited.

The VOG said he speaks to so many couples who wish they could do the whole day again and that this is the closest you will get to recapturing all those special moments which you might have missed on the day.

Your clips have just reinforced that point - going to show H2B later on!

    Thanks again!
