Weight Loss Resources/counting calories

Chicken, 1 April, 2009 at 11:11 Posted on Beauty & Wellbeing 0 14

Have just signed up for 24 hour trial thing and I'm quite impressed. I don't snack so much but my portion size is huge and I do choose the wrong things so hopefully this will help. Does anyone use it? Thought I'd sign up for 3 months so I can get my head around making better choices and exercising some portion control!

I've put I want to lose 1.5lbs a week so I'm allowed 1100 cals per day (without exercise - I run for about 20 mins 3 times a week at the moment which I doubt is worth mentioning). Think I'll find this quite hard to stick to though. Just had 2 toast with margarine and marmite for breakfast and now I've only got 700 cals for the rest of the day. Is this normal? I've never counted calories before.

I've used Weight loss resources in the past (and need to sign up again as have put 10lbs on since finally losing my baby weight last year ?) and found it quite good. It certainly made me re-address my portion sizes and also make different choices when buying certain foods such as margarine and mayo etc.

1100 calories is quite low tbh and I'd struggle to do it for long - I tend to set my target as 1lb a week which for my weight and height tends to be about 1300 calories a day. I always include any exercise too as it gives you some calories back.

400 calories for 2 pieces of toast seems quite high - an average slice of bread is about 100 calories. Maybe check your weight for the marg and marmite? (Flora extra light is the lowest calorie one you can get btw so I swear by it when counting calores!)

Cheers Saz. That was 2 slices of medium Hovis and 2 thickly spread margarine portions. Was from work canteen so don't know what bread and marg was used (was also before I decided to count calories so marg will be off menu in future). Might change it to 1lb a week though as I can't imagine sticking at 1100 for too long.

    ? Chook

1.5lb a week is too much at your weight, basically. You'll struggle on 1100 calories a day, and remember, as soon as the weight starts to come off it will go down even more.

I'd change it to 1lb a week or even .5.

Definitely count your running - 60 minutes running a week is about 700 calories, so an extra 100 a day - well worth having imo! Try and walk a lot - you'll be amazed how it adds up.

You'll also be amazed how the booze adds up ?

WLR is fantastic - the only problem is resisting the temptation to lie to it!

    ?

You're right, will change it. Am falling into diet trap and wanting to lose it all by tomorrow, at the latest. It doesn't work.

Plus, I'm eating out tonight before football and changing to either .5 or 1lb loss a week means I can actually eat something rather than push it all around a plate! Breakfast hammered me.

The way I see it, the only way to lose weight and keep it off is to start eating now like you're going to eat for the rest of your life. It's practically effortless and means that once you reach your ideal weight, the loss will level off by itself, but it is a slooooooow process! Took me six months to lose half a stone last year ?

    I'm a WLR regular.

1100 cals is the minimum it will allow you to go down to. What is your activity level set at? The way I do it is set that to mod. sed. and then count every excercise calorie I can, that way I don't eat it unless I've earnt it. I eat all of my excercise cals though. Mod. sed. should give you enough calories to lose weight with out feeling deprived. you'll be amazed at what is seemingly just a few calories can do for you when you're starving.

so that 20 minute run that is hardly worth counting is probably 'earning' you nearly 100 more calories. It is worth counting, that is a mid morning snack.

Avoid bread, eat wholemeal med.sliced as it is only 50cals a slice if you do eat it. And eat plenty of porridge and eggs-they'll fill you up with out using up too many calories.

    Eggs are your friend ?

Low-fat cottage cheese is also good and a big bowl of museli (get it from health shops or check that it doesn't have added sugar/salt/coconut/all kinds of shite) with ff Greek nat yog and berries is only about 200 cal and keeps you full for ages.

Prawn salad was my staple diet last summer when following WLR! Egg white omellette too with mushrooms.

I also avoid bread as Dot suggests.

Will sign up again I think - this thread has got me motivated!

Hi, I use foodfocus.co.uk which is the same as WLR but free! I do find though that some foods are counted higher in calories than they actually are. Last year I was losing a lb a week by using that site and working out 3 x a week for 50 mins. Since christmas I have put on a few lbs again and really got out of the habit of eating healthily, I've started using it again and lost a lb already.

I do agree that 1100 calories is too low, I think I'm at 1400 and that's with a target of 1 lb a week. Every little bit of excersise is worth counting, even walking to the shop ? Good luck with it!

I'm back on WLR too and loving it. Am finding it hard to stick to my calories at the mo tho as can't run due to injury. Physio said at least another 2 weeks off. I'm on 1300 cals and I'm finding it tough. 1100 would be far too low for me. I don't tend to have bread much as it doesn't fill me up for long. Porridge and fruit are staples. I had a heinz big eat pot for lunch which was surprisingly filling for 250 cals. I also have the pasta n sauce things - share a pack with H - they're really nice too and quite satisfying for a lunch.

I lost 2lbs this week. Woot. Am now on 1280 cals a day plus my running ones. Taking stairs instead of lifts etc as well. Happy days.
