Weirdest reason for calling in sick?

pandorasbox, 18 January, 2012 at 13:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 29

My friend at work has phoned in sick as she has an embarassing problem which she told me, but is faking illness to work. She had some kind of beauty treatment to remove facial hair and it has burned her lip and caused various delightful scabs and oozing (TMI sorry), she messed with it and now it has wrecked her mouth so she is too embarrassed to come in. It made me wonder what weird things have happened to everyone to make them hide away from work.

Mine is when I put toothpaste on spots to get rid. Except it was whitening paste, so it literally burned the flesh off overnight. I spent the rest of the week off work as I was too embarassed to face everyone with massive burnt and peeling patches on my face!

I used some out of date concealer once and it made my eye swell up huge! I didn't leave the house for days.

I am an unfortunate sufferer of coldsores and often have to come into work with a huge blister resembling Mount Vesuvius perched on my lip/chin/face ?

Dont really think i could call in sick for something like that though even though its embarrasing.

A colleague was ill one time and was prescribed antibiotics, she then took a weird reaction to them and had a rash for two weeks. I developed glandular fever while she was off and had to struggle in to work regardless, while her FB updates consisted of her close friends going over to hers for cocktails, etc. She was technically no longer ill, just embarrassed about her rash - but I was ill and couldn't be off because she was...I was not impressed!

    A hair dye disaster.

I once bought a pink hair dye, under the impression it would just add a pink tint to my hair, but I didn't realise it was the real deal... my hair ended up bright pink... and I phoned in sick to avoid going into work.

It was only three days off work, because on the second day, I managed to find a professional colourist who agreed to fix it for me the next day outside of his normal working hours.

I can honestly say I've never called in sick apart from when I was genuinely sick!

Actually, I once called in sick because I was hideously hungover. It was when I worked part-time on a Sunday in Dunelm! I'd been out the night before and got so plastered I passed out. I rang in, but didn't lie. I just plainly said to them that I was too hungover to move, the whole room was spinning & every movement made me want to throw up. I think they appreciated my honesty.

I've never called in sick for work (we don't get paid if we're off so it's not worth it)

A boy who used to work with me tried to call in sick because he had a sore finger - manager told him to get his @rse into work and stop being pathetic!

Nothing that makes a great story I don't think but when I used to go through phases of REALLY bad spotty skin I'd sometimes call in sick, a little bit due to embarassment but mostly due to how low it made me feel I'd get all panicy thinking about people seeing me. Nowadays my skin is not so bad but even if I have a pretty bad spot or something I just carry on regardless, it's other people who have to look at it not me!! haha

Well I'm allergic to latex and I guess the cheap ass shoes I wore must have had latex in them somewhere. Obviously I have learned my lesson and now stick to Laboutin's at all times.

I am always too scared to lie!

I did work somewhere once and a guy called in to say he had a little cut on his toe and the dye in his socks had got in the cut and it was itching!

I had to call in sick once because I accidentally took an over dose of pain killers and was hallucinating that there was a ginger lady in glasses following me trying to tickle me

    Haha! How cheeky!

I ended up with a huge sore patch on my heel after something i had to do for work, i ended up taking quite a bit of skin off it and it was so painful. I wore flip flops in the office for about 3 weeks afterwards because it was so sore. Several times my head of dept asked me why i wasn't wearing shoes and I enjoyed showing him the nice hole in my foot.

I've never taken any days off sick except for being unwell, but one time our toilet flooded and gallons of wee/water spilled over and eventually onto the carpet in our office (very small building) The smell was unbelievable, I was heaving at my desk, so after a while I went home to work from there. And they tried to make me take it as sick time! I thought it was a bit unfair.

I called in sick once with an ingrown hair... It had got infected, was right where knicker elastic sits and very painful. Lucky my shift pattern was such that I only had to have the one day off. Only other option was to go to work in a skirt and no knickers ? Work in a factory with lots of stairs! Had to put as the reason on my return to work form - 'a very embarrassing problem but happy to tell HR if necessary'. They never asked for details ?

I had some sort of wierd insect infection in my legs - last few days on holiday in Italy and my feet and legs swelled up, then developed black rings all over my feet. I was travelling on my own and was too stubborn to ask my parents to pick me up from the airport so got two coaches and a bus home and then walked from the bus stop. I say walked, more shuffled as my calves were solid, red and huge. My parents took one look at me and took me to A&E where I was given a variety of drugs! Had to call in sick to my job which at the time was in retail as I couldn't put any shoes on and the hospital told me I had to keep off my feet as much as possible.

    Genuine sick calls I have taken for my staff;

"I am stuck up a tree"

"My housemate has mumps and I dont want to catch it and pass it on to people" (probably best not to stay in the house with her then is it? Get to work)

"I have broken my ankle" (later seen dancing on the tables in a nightclub. by me. P45 in the morning.

"I was too tierd to get out of bed this morning"

"I was going to come to work today but when I thought about it I thought I may feel ill later on so thought it was best to stay at home, rather than come in and then go home"

"I have a condom stuck inside me"

No idea! When it started I was walking round the Colloseum in Rome and it was a really hot day and I just thought my feet were swelling due to the heat and walking around so much. By the time I got back to the campsite they were enourmous and when I showed it to the two girls I had met and become friendly with they stuck me in a freezing cold shower to try and bring the swelling down but nothing worked. They were really kind and didn't go out the next day at all but took me to a pharmacist to try and get it sorted and then stayed by the pool at the campsite with me instead of looking round Rome - bearing in mind I had only met them a few days beforehand, I thought this was really nice of them. It was the next day that I went home and the hospital couldn't offer me any real explanation other than they thought I must have been bitten by some wierd insect and it had affected my blood, water levels in the body etc. It was the black rings that really freaked me out and my boss didn't believe me as it sounded so far fetched!

I rarely call in sick. The last time I was genuinely hurt and was calling work at 11pm from hospital, panicking that they'd be disappointed I couldn't work the next morning ?

I bunked off school for a week once though cos I had a cold sore.

Oh and another week when my dog got put to sleep. Refused to go to school or speak to my Mum. She did the whole "I'll leave your tea outside your room" thing and I'd then leave the empty plate outside the door for her to take away. Bit like prison I guess. Spent the week graffiti-ing my bedroom walls with gravestones. I kid you not.

OMG! This reminds me of some of the stories my mum tells me (she's an X-ray nurse) when people get "things" (ahem) stuck inside them. The usual story is that they've fallen onto it (a lightbulb? seriously?)
