Well looks like I'm also joining the ranks of the unemployed!

Michpuss, 17 November, 2008 at 11:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

I'm in a bit of a state of shock I think.

I left a job where I had been with the company (including the sister company) for over 20 years to start a new job in January. Now 11 months later I am out of work.

The timing is awful as we are going on holiday on Thursday and back around 3 weeks before Christmas so not great for job hunting. Not sure what I will do now.

Maybe it's time for a change of industry but I have only ever worked in one industry. This job was a slight change and hasn't worked out so I really don't know what I will do.

Oh Michpuss I'm sorry to hear this. Is it because the job didn't work out or because of last in first out type redundancies?

Can I suggest you speak to your local benefits office to see what you are entitled to.

    Good luck ?

Oh god, that's awful ? Don't know what to say really. Are you going to be able to take a couple of months to think about what to do next?

Sorry to hear that, If your back 3 weeks before Christmas could you take a seasonal job for a few weeks until you sort some interviews out?

Sorry to hear that. I am also being made redundant from early December (just as I was about to return from maternity leave!) and it isn't nice.

I am trying to see it as a positive step - new opportunities etc and the redundancy money will buy me some time to get something I want.

    Will you get any redundancy?

Really sorry to hear that Mich (IIRC, you helped me out with some flight enquiries a while ago. Even IIDRC, still very sorry to hear it, of course).

    Thanks everyone.

I'm not being made redundant - I'm leaving by mutual agreement. But basically I have been screwed.

I'm getting a couple of months salary so have a bit of a breathing space. I'll update my CV and send it out to a couple of agencies by tomorrow but then we're away for 3 weeks.

    Yes, that was me.

I want to get back into an airline I think - it will mean a drop in salary and that's assuming I can find something. Not an idea time for airlines at the moment.

I've seen an advert for a Leisure Account Manager for an airline - I've come from the Corporate side but I'll still apply and see what happens.

    It's complicated.....

I'm the 3rd person off the account in the last few months though. One in the US, one in Switzerland and now me (That's one in each of their major markets).

    It's political to some extent.

Oh you poor thing - hope that you're ok

Horribly bad timing but it might give you a little while whilst you're away to think through what you want to do and if this gives you some new opportunities

So sorry you are in this situation. My H is also leaving "by mutual agreement" although it's not very mutual so can guess how you are feeling.

Being in the travel industry as well I can totally understand the feeling of wanting to stay in but also knowing that it's not the best time for looking for work. If you want to PM / email me with your skills set or the type of thing you are looking for and I'll keep an eye on the Virgin Atlantic internal jobs site. We are doing lots of restructuring and top bods leaving so there will be things coming up.

Thanks - I'm in North London though so Crawley is too far to go. I'll let you know if I change my mind though.

Hi Miche. Sorry to hear this, J told me last night but have been having a crap time myself and didn't get round to getting in touch. I hope it doesn't ruin your trip and that something better comes along. Hopefully it is one of those crappy things that will lead to something far better.

Can I confess to having a little smile at 'seasonal work'? (and smiles are few and far between here at the sec) I can just picture you in some green tights and a set of Elves ears! ?

I'm sorry Michpuss. I know they headhunted you from your other job, so not that you were even looking to leave it. Totally sucks.

I'm sure you'll get something else promptly, just try and enjoy your holiday though.

If you are leaving by mutual agreement, I imagine they have to set up a compromise agreement with you? And pay for a solicitor for you? are they likely to pay you off? If so that could tide you over until you decide what you would like to do more long term.

It is crappy though, particularly when they head hunted you.

Mich, just saw this now - so sorry. What a bunch of twunts.

I hope you still manage to enjoy your holiday. I'll ask M is he thinks there's anything at his company - they've not been hit as hard as other travel companies so there might be something.

    H x

Aw, Mitchpuss, that's a bit of a bu**er. I hope you manage to get something sorted, and that it doesn't spoil your holiday.
