Welshthistle's very belated wedding report - but with a big *FLASH*!

Welshthistle, 9 November, 2010 at 20:19 Posted on Planning 0 21

So, here goes - over a month after the event but better late than never!

Thursday

OH had been working away Mon-Wed, so I ended up having to take Thursday off (big thanks to my understanding boss!) to clean the house for our guests and to meet the organist. After little snarky comments about my choice of hymns " Oh, that's very common", she then announced she'd need a lift to and from the ceremony. Cue minor organisation panic resolved by the nice minister being her chauffer.

My bridesmaid, her fiance, my dad, stepmum and best man all arrive in OH's home town and we head up the road to ours. OH's parents join and we have a really nice meal, gave the parents their presents which they liked (if you're interested, we got my dad and stepmum personalised whisky and an engraved quaich, and OH's parents an engraved Welsh slate cheeseboard and an engraved lovespoon). OH's parents went home and the rest stayed with us in our furniture-less house!

Friday

Bridesmaid and I were going to get our nails done and meeting bridesmaid 2 there. All quite calm in the morning, my dad cut our grass and my stepmum did my ironing which was very nice of them, and I spent half an hour hunting for a silver heart to hang in the church (still haven't found it!).

Headed into town, got caught in traffic and I ended up jumping out at traffic lights and sprinting through the shopping centre to make it to my manicure (I also forgot that I had my bridesmaid's iphone on my lap when I jumped out, but luckily it's very tough!)

Bridesmaid 2 was also running late, but we managed to get our manicures done, then it was off to the train station to collect my friend who'd come over from New York, then to OH's home town to load up the cars and decorate church and venue.

Then the rain started - and I mean proper, relentless hard rain! I met up with a neighbour from Wales who had driven 300 welshcakes made by my grandmother all the way up to Angus and collected them, managed to load the cars without getting things too wet. OH's family seemed to take a step back from helping now that my lot were up - which was respectful, but possibly the worst time to do that!

We set off for the church and castle, which are right by each other. I managed to get us lost on the way! But we got there in the end, hung 44 hearts on the pew ends, bridesmaid 2 and her boyfriend (bless him, second time meeting me, first ever wedding, he was a star) set up the tables with the favours etc.

Bridesmaid 1 and I drove to collect my minister from his hotel and everyone turned up for the rehearsal. I'd been pretty calm up to this point, but my family had missed their connection at Edinburgh and so would miss the rehearsal, and the rehearsal seemed mainly to focus on whether or not the bridal party should sit down during readings!

Stress levels pretty high at this point, bridesmaids, partners and myself headed to our lovely B&B, we went to get chips, I met up with my workmate who'd driven down a flower arrangement for the church, then we all had chips, champagne and ben & jerry's!

I gave the boys whisky to thank them for their help, then my bridesmaids and I painted our toenails, drank champagne and watched Gavin and Stacey. They also gave me a beautiful necklace which was very touching.

Then off to bed!

Right, this is already ridiculously long so I'll leave it for now, go and have my supper then finish it! I promise the next part will be mainly photos!

Sorry for boring you all!

Ok, time for the report proper!

I slept well, got up at 7, hogged the shower (sorry bridesmaids!), had a light breakfast then walked to the hotel where my family and half of Wales (it seemed) were staying. I really enjoyed the walk - despite the torrential rain of Friday, it was a beautiful blue sky and I had time to savour that this was my wedding day. It was all quiet, empty streets, just quite cool in general!

I met my family at the hotel and gave them their cards and presents ('I Love you Mum' book for mum, celtic brooch for my grandmother, engraved photoframe for sister), had a cup of tea, saw one of my friends who had recently become engaged then got picked up by my bridesmaids, headed off to the castle to get ready there.

We got lost again. I found it funny, but poor bridesmaid was apologising all the way there! I had to take the flowers to the church so they dropped me there, again, it was nice to be in the church on my own, it was lovely. I walked towards the castle and luckily the make up lady was passing so gave me a lift! The hairdresser was already there and had started on one of my bridesmaids. So then it all started (very calmly acutally!) - hair, make up, dresses. My sister had gone to the church to practice, OH's family were in a cottage in the grounds and the sun was still shining!

The florist dropped off the flowers and the bouquet was EXACTLY what I wanted, I loved it! The hairdresser was calm, and I got a chance to speak to my best friend who wasn't able to get off work.

I got into my dress, almost saw OH out of the window which led to a flurry of spinning me round and blocking the windows! My mum, sister and grandmother were nowhere to be seen with half an hour to go, they were still getting ready in their cottage! They finally turned up, got their buttonholed then it was time to head for the church.

The piper was playing when I got there, and he started playing the Welsh national anthem which got a few people crying! Then it was time to go in - my dad said 'I'd ask you if you were sure you're doing the right thing, but I know you are'. My sister played whilst the bridesmaids, page boy and my dad and me walked down. I loved seeing my friends and family as I walked down, and I didn't mind about everyone staring!

The ceremony was short - the whole thing was bilingual, and the Scottish half did very well with the Welsh hymns! My friend read really well, the ceremony was lovely (I didn't cry luckily!). During the 'if anyone knows of any lawful impediment bit', the 2-year old pageboy shouted out! It cracked everybody up and relieved the tension!

OH struggled to sign the register as he's not too adept with the fountain pen, so I got a giggle out of that. We used my grandfather's fountain pen, and as he's no longer with us I was glad to have something of his being part of the wedding.

My friends sang during the signing of the register and they were phenomenal - people were coming up to me all day complimenting them, and the piper was so taken with them singing he forgot to go outside to pipe us out!

We came out, mingled in the sunshine and had photos taken.

So here are some photos, finally!

    More to follow!

    Lovely report and pics!

I would have been so cross at the organist for her comments about the song choices!! Popular doesn't mean common!

I love your picture hearts - and you are so pretty! Smiley smile

Argh I posted some photos but they disappeared!

Right, after the church everyone walked along the lane to the castle, where they had champagne, shortbread and welshcakes. We took some photos with everyone, then went round the grounds for some photos (we even got one with OH's family dog!).

We got even more photos inside (I'm not a fan of having my photo taken, and the photographer ignored instructions I'd given him and went into generic wedding photo mode which made things worse. Also, my bra strap was showing in loads of the professional pictures!)

We were then piped in by OH's cousin. My uncle was MC and he was so nervous about announcing us to the room, he was pacing up and down when we arrived!

We went to cut the cake with this long knife - and couldn't! I had to grab the end and force it down, it was quite an inept display from the both of us! The speeches were before the meal and they went down well - OH hates public speaking so I was very impressed with him!

The food arrived - I had hardly any of it, but I did manage to get round 20 tables during 3 courses. I was told the food was lovely though! It was great to speak to everyone, and people were writing little notes to put in our guest postbox instead of a guestbook, so that was good.

The evening guests started to arrive, then it was time for the first dance. It was to 'Kiss Me' by Sixpence None The Richer, and when we tried to get everyone on to the floor none of the beggars would! They ended up encircling us on the dance floor instead!

The ceilidh started, the band were brilliant and people really threw themsleves into the dancing (whether they all should have is another matter!). I danced every dance (my feet actually were bleeding at the end) and in general had a fantastic time. My family enjoyed, there was no arguing or anything like that which was a massive relief. My stepdad didn't come, but to be honest I just had to put it out of my mind for that day. People seemed to be enjoying themselves (possibly helped by the jager bar OH's friends had set up in the car park!).

All in all, it was a fantastic day - we had a final dance, then we had a sing off between the Welsh and the Scots! I believe it was a draw at the end...

I was absolutely shattered by this point, saying goodbye to everyone, so OH and I went to bed. I got a slight second wind reading people's notes, but only for 10 minutes! Slept like a log - and wasn't disturbed by the resident ghost!

Next morning we all had a nice breakfast, then OH's family had an open house so chatted to more people there. Monday we headed to Mauritius, which was everything we wanted it to be. Beautiful, warm, relaxing and all-inclusive!

I think I'll leave it there, and put some more photos on the next post!

    N&P:

Purfect Gems who made the bridesmaids' hairbands and combs - so sparkly!

Debbie Graham who made the bridesmaids' jewellery - absoutely gorgeous and they're wearing them all the time!

Prettywild for a gorgeous photo album I had made for my mum

Raezor sharp hairdressing and Adele McClue make up - both did a fantastic job, and were brilliant in the morning

Turriffs flowers - possibly my favourite thing of the day was my bouquet!

Crafty Em - made personalised cards for my bridesmaids, gorgeous

And thanks to everyone who helped me out over the past 10 months!

Ok, last post I promise! Just some pictures in general:

This isn't obvious, but this is the table numbers - there's a '17' on one side and these are pictures of me and OH at 17

    The Welsh-Scottish sing off!

    Some cool dancing photos!

    And that's it!

    Thanks for reading!
