Weston-Super-Mare pier on fire

We were only there at the weekend. Can't believe it. Think of all the people who will be without jobs. Only good thing is that it wasn't open at the time.

Have just been watching it on Sky News, amazing how quickly it went up, we would go there most years as it's not far from here, and the kids would go on the pier, such a shame.

It will be devastating for Weston, as that was the main attraction there.

You're right Chickie, the pier is one of the only attractions in Weston. Do they have a clue how it was started?

I went last year with my Mum and Dad, and it's great in a cheesy seaside way.

I've just been up onto the second floor at work to see if I can see the clouds of smoke, but at the angle can only see as far as Avonmouth.

I agree it'll be devastating for the area.

ps why has my font gone small?

I don't think they know for sure, earlier they were saying about a kitchen, but nothing confirmed. Just lucky really that it was early morning and empty.

(I have small fonts too when replying but they show normal in the post!)

I've just been looking at the pics on the BBC website too - it's so sad. We went over just a few months ago so that I could take photos for my photography project. I suppose effectively they have become quite historical now.

They've not long started renovation the old Pier, but obviously that's going to take time, and it's further away from where the main beach is now.

That's such a shame. I remember my sister taking me to Southampton Pier back in the day - it burned down in the 1980s and wasn't ever rebuilt.

    It's so sad.

I'm oddly upset by this - it was part of my childhood I guess.

Anyone else wonder if it's an insurance job? It was only bought 4 months ago.

Can honestly say I am devastated!

Loved the pier as a young 'un and also as a parent. As we are only 20 mins away from it was a family favourite. We were on the beach on wednesday and I'm so sad that we didn't take one last visit!

Sorry to say, this was my first thought on reading the article. I'm not sure what that says about me but massive development, started early hours when no-one would be there, owner happened to go to Spain yesterday? It sounds like an old school episode of The Bill!

I've only been to Weston twice but it was a great, cheesy pier. It's a shame for the people whose livelihoods are gone.
