what age did you first shave (or wax/hair removal etc) your legs

muffins, 29 July, 2009 at 18:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

I am trying to remember when I first shaved my legs, think I was probably about 10? I remember having lots of cuts!!

My daughter is coming up eight and whilst I most def think this is too young to start, I wondered when would be appropriate. She is very blond but very hairy and is quite aware of her legs as children being children do point it out.

Just curious as to what was the average age!!

I think I was about 12. I seem to remember my mum bought be an electric ladyshave. Also seem to remember that I started just with underarms. But it's so long ago, I can't remember the details!

I have 3 girls and the oldest is 12 and she is always moaning about hairy legs. I shall watch this thread with interest to see what age is the norm. She still seems too young to start shaving.

So sad to think that normal body hair is something kids point out.

I think I was about 12 and my mother was v disapproving. When my daughter wants to start I shall be equally disapproving- not because it will make any difference (it certainly didn't with me ?) but because I think it's good to have, amongst the throng of voices telling her her normal body hair is actually abnormal and needs removing, at least one voice saying she's lovely as she is.

I think I was about 11...but I do have very dark hair so it was quite noticeable. I can remember one girl (who was v cool) coming into school with her legs absolutely ripped to shreds because she'd dry shaved with her dad's razor. Ouch.

Not long after I started high school- so 11.

My leg hair/ armpit hair never bothered me, I suppose because my mum was Au Naturale and saw absolutely no point in removing hair 'which will only grow back'. I used one of my dad's disposable orange & white bic razor, after one girl loudly pointed out my Oxter hair in the changing rooms and everyone laughed ☹️ The thing was, I thought armpit hair was something to be pleased about, as it meant your periods would start soon, and I was mortified to find out people thought it was something dirty/ unclean.

I do not recommend one-blade bic razors for shaving ANYTHING btw! They are awful!

I think I was about 13 or maybe even 14. It wasn't a case of being pointed out to me, I was just curious so used one of my dad's disposable bic razors and some soap and water (i was knowledgeable enough not to do it dry at least!). I did however have someone start making comments about my armpit hair, so that got shaved off as well.

I have actually said to myself that if I have a daughter, I'm going to be very supportive of her shaving, whenever she feels ready. Yes, I'd tell her it's natural to have hair, but that it's more socially acceptable to not have noticable hair and explain why so that she understands why.

Ooo toughie. 11 or 12? can't quite remember.

I was desperate to do it as I was really hairy (luckily blonde though) and I hated it. My Mum made me use hair removal gel the first time and was really against me starting to shave. As someone who has saved for nearly 20 years now i'm not certain why- maybe if I have a daughter and see her silky unshaved skin I'll understand.

I was about 13 or 14 I think. My mum told me all the time that it was normal and I was lovely as I was and I would end up hating having to shave my legs regularly (and I can see where she was coming from, like Knownowt says, maybe you should have at least one voice telling you that). But I also went ahead and did it anyway and although I was pleased with the results, I felt bad for going against what my mum said and maybe that I'd disappointed her a bit. Which is irrational really. But when I have a daughter of that age, I will her that she's lovely as she is and there's no need, but I'll also buy her a razor too because I hated thinking that I was doing something my mum didn't approve of (even though she shaved her legs too!)

Luckily I got over that by the time I was 15 and indulged in plenty of disappointing behaviour without the crippling guilt!

Much later than the average on here it would seem. I think I was about 16 - and it was about a year after my periods started. I'm hoping that if I was late with those milestones, my menopause might be late too (whenever the hell that's all supposed to kick off?)

I should also say that I think anything under 12 is too young. It makes me so sad that children are so aware of their own, and their peers', appearance. Other kids commented on my hair too (as I was so dark) and my mum's constant 'They are just jealous, ignore them' mantra really did work! It hurt when they mentioned it but I grew a tough shell and became proud of the way I looked (not necessarily the hair but just 'me'!) and I wouldn't have benefitted from that if I'd just been handed a Bic and tube of shaving cream.

I think I was about 10 or 11 when I first shaved my legs, as someone else said my mum had a ladyshave which I wanted to try out of curiosity. I don't think I tried a proper razor until much, much later, perhaps at 16.

I was about 11 or 12 I think - I had really dark hairs and people pointed them out at school, so I used my mum's ladyshave to remove them.

I don't think you can say "you shouldn't do it before X age" as children grow up at different rates - if I had a child and she wanted to shave her legs I would let her (so long as she wasn't really young, like 6 or something) as I would sooner her do it if she felt better about herself for it, than let her feel uncomfortable - and especially if other people had commented on it and she felt she wanted to shave. But maybe I'm sensitive about it as it's one of many things I was bullied about at school [:-(]

I was about 13 I think. A girl in the playground told me I needed to start shaving my legs and I was mortified to notice that I was the only one who hadn't started.

Thank you for your replies, I am giving her tonnes of messages about being happy with how she is and not to worry about what her friends say, but she asked me if she could trim them a bit!

I was about 14 I think. My mum was dead set against me doing it and I was really upset at getting teased at school about it. Eventually she bought me an electric lady shave and I was elated ?

I was 13 - second year at secondary school. I had very dark hairy legs and my mum told me not to shave, and that she'd take me to get them waxed, but I got bored of waiting (and had too many nasty comments at school as well) so I nicked my dad's razor and gel and did it myself. Looking back I do wish she had taken me to get my legs waxed when I first wanted to, as I had horrible stubble and 5 o'clock leg shadow, I've been waxing the last 10 years and haven't looked back.

If I had a daughter I would encourage to wait until secondary school, and then probably suggest immac and then waxing when she's brave enough!

I was 11, I remember this because I was at school doing athletics with the other girls when one of them said errgghhh you have hairy legs, I was so upset when I got home I said to my Mum we need do something about the hairs on my legs you've got to get me something!

All I'll say is don't let your daughters be upset like I was.

I think I was about 13/14 which was quite odd considering I was early for everything else, boobs at 9, periods at 10.

I would whip any daughter of mine down the beautician to get waxed rather than shaving though. I've been getting waxed for about 10 years and I have big bald patches on my legs so if i'd been doing it for 20 I would hope that regrowth would be non-existant ?

I think I was about 14/15. I know my daughter who's 10 has fairly long hairs on her legs, however it doesn't seem like anyone at school has said anything. Or if they have she's stood up to them about it. She's the sort of girl though that wore crocs, socks and jeans out to town, and when I told her that maybe she might like to think about taking her socks off she told me that she was quite comfortable wearing them and didn't care what she looked like ?
