What an utterly sh*t start to the day

alison76, 13 January, 2009 at 09:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I arrive in to work to find an e-mail from one of my best mates. She's the sister of the guy whose wedding we're going to in the Highlands in October (see my previous posts about where to stay).

His fiancée, who is also a good friend, has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. It must be quite serious as she had a CT scan yesterday, bone scan today, seeing consultant tomorrow and starting chemo pretty much immediately.

Why do bad things happen to such good people?

And to top it off I get a text from my sister telling me my 86 yr old Grandad is going in to hospital for an operation today. When he had his prostate tests just before Xmas (which I knew about) they found a growth on his bladder. No-one thought to tell me about that or the operation.

So please can we have some hitched vibes for Caroline and my Grandad?

Thanks.

Ct and bone scans are common diagnostic tools following a diagnosis of breast cancer to see if there has been any spread.

Breast cancer is so variable, it is many diseases in one and there are any number of outcomes / treatments. My mum was diagnosed before Christmas and I am fast becoming an expert (hollow laughter)

I hope your friend has a good outcome I can recommend www.breastcancercare.org.uk for info.

Thanks Neffi - will pass that on. Just had a text from the groom - think he's in a state of shock. Certainly his sister who e-mail me said any contact offering support would be useful right now.

Well, hopefully she will already have had contact with a macmillan / breast cancer nurse when she received her diagnosis and they will give her and her family a lot of support through treatment, which could be surgery, chemo, radiotherapy, hormone treatment or a combination of some or all of the above, depends what type of bc it is, where it is, if it has spread to lymph nodes etc.

Breast cancer care have a nurse led helpline and some excellent discussions forums with some very knowledgeable and courageous people.

BC is not a death sentence, far from it, but like anything, knowledge is power, and the sooner they feel strong enough to start talking and reading they should do so while trying to stick to reputable sources of info like BCC, Cancerbackup, Macmillan etc.
