Mrs Chef, 31 August, 2009 at 07:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

We are off to citroen today to hopefully buy a new car. We do have a car for the scrappage scheme which is a bonus for us but i want to know if any of u have some good advice/tips on getting the best deal as obviously we would like to pay as little as possible!!

i've never bought a new car before so i'm worried i'm gonna get talked over by the salesman and i think i need some good tactics on getting the price down!

thanks

MrSun is fab at negotiating, he's getting cheekier and cheekier, it helps to get a good rapport going with the salesman. He usually starts off low and goes from there, it's better sometimes to walk away but we travelled quite a distance to get the Toyota we just bought so the salesman had us a bit on that IYSWIM

Don't sign up there and then, it's worth taking the figures away and calling a different dealer to see if they can do any better (don't feel pressured into signing the first deal you look at) .

You'll often get a better deal if it's a car they have in stock rather than one that has to be built to order so if you're flexible on specification/colour that can help. Not sure if you're looking at finance but different dealers also offer different rates. We bought a new car on Saturday, the dealer we're going with is offering 3.9% APR but our local dealer could only offer 4.9%, the deals worked out about £40 a month more from the local dealer so it's well worth the effort for us to travel the 50 miles to collect from the other dealer!

    Have fun, it's exciting stuff!

pretty much what BS said - we (well H) played off 2 dealers against each other - both were desperate to get their stock shifted as the particular model we wanted was not being made anymore and the new shape models were being released (golf r32) and it was also the close to the end of the month so they wanted the sale in their figures for that month. we ended up travelling to manchester from herts to get the car rather than the dealer that is walking distance from our house as they came up with the best deal in the end. also don't be scared to haggle on extras or things like servicing or GAP insurance - we got £50 off the £250 3 years service package just by asking.
