What Are Ushers Jobs at CoE Church Wedding?

rp304, 4 July, 2013 at 09:52 Posted on Planning 0 6

When we met the vicar for the last time he mentioned that we would need to take our ushers to the rehearsal (which is 4 days before the wedding) as they can be shown the jobs they have to do. The only usher so to speak that we have is 8, and I didn't think to ask him (the vicar), but now I am wondering what the jobs are and whether we need to find some people to help the 8 year old do them?

Thanks Smiley smile

Ushers normally help people to their seats, which is why I think they're normally adolescent and older and younger= page boy traditionally

Thanks, Yes we had planned for the 8 year old to be page boy. My two brother are wearing bridal party matching suits so I suggested they be ushers, but OH seems to think we don't need ushers. We having a verger too, but I imagine there will be a few jobs to do eg handing out the orders of service. Just trying to put together some evidence to show OH we do need my brothers as ushers.

They hardly ever help people to their seats, maybe Mums or Grandparents-- but they do accompany the groom to the pub, give out the order of service, help with directing cars to the church hall carpark, fetch and carry for you and the groom, e.g. the groom has left his cufflinks in the car so its their job to run and get them, sometimes the flower pedestals are taken from the church to the reception and they do this, and perhaps hold the umbrella for said Mums and Grandparents, so generally they are officially on hand to fetch and carry and as they are designated ushers they can not say no,

Handing out orders of service, and directing people to seats (if you care about having a bride's side/groom's side) is the main role of the ushers. Your brothers could still do this even if they're not officially called ushers.

A more recent duty of ushers is to ask people as they hand them the order of service to make sure their phones are switched off, you don't don't want any phone calls or texts arriving during the service. Also to let people know if photography will not be allowed during the service (our minister has requested this - photos only during the signing of the register).

Welcoming people to church, showing them to seats, handing out orders of service.

Sometimes handing out confetti at the end..

But none of these require attending the rehearsal, might be handy but if they can't make it just show the the relevant stuff on the day (your OH not you!).

We had 1 out of 4 ushers at our rehearsal and to be honest, the 1 that was there didn't have ANYTHING to do at it. The rehearsal is about the 2 of you, the vows and also to some extent the entrance and exit from church so it's more useful for bridesmaids than ushers really
