What are you doing with your dress after the big day?

Rebecca86, 10 January, 2011 at 17:08 Posted on Planning 0 19

I've seen lots of gorgeous dresses and i have around £1000 mark to purchase a dress

but there's a part of me that hates the fact i've going to spend soo much money on something

i'm only going to wear once, people have suggested keeping it and saving it or my daughter

or making it into christening gowns i feel i just cannot do that, i'm not 100% sure on how i feel about

hiring one, if i did it would have to be brand new! I'm really stuck

So what is everyone else doing with their dress after the wedding

Im thinking of buying a mannequin and having a space in the spare bedroom where I can have a "wedding area" where I set out my bouquet, dress etc so I can still go and have a look at it when I want to, I certainly have no plans or intentions to sell it, I just dont think I could do it.

I'm keeping mine and I really, really hope that it fits/suits my future daughter so she can wear it on her wedding day. Also hoping I only have 1 daughter, otherwise there will be a fight.

Mine is going to be made into a christening gown (if we are lucky enough to have a girl).

ETA: My cousin got married 6 years ago and her wedding dress is being used by her sister (also my cousin) for her wedding.

Do you really think that if you were to have a daughter she would actually want the dress? Not meaning it in a disrespective way, but although my moms was lovely it wasnt something i would wear or ever wear. Just curious ?

If my mother still had hers, I'd have worn it as my going away outfit! It was a fab knee length ivory crocheted dress with matching coat. Very 60's!

My mom got married less than 5 years ago, and I wouldn't wear her dress now. For a start she is 4 sizes bigger than me, she is also an apple shape body whereas I am more of an hourglass/pear, she has a red-ish skin tone so wore Ivory wheras I am quite dark so can pull off diamond white.

That said I will be wearing her tiara, and would have worn her veil if it hadn't been Ivory.

I think I will prob sell it if I am honest. I love it to bots but it is a wedding dress and so not something i am going to wear again. Our apartment doesnt have much storage so no where to keep it and if I can sell it quickly will give us some spending money for the honeymoon.

Mine is screwed up in a big ikea bag, covered in mud, and will probably stay there for another six months or so til I get round to having it cleaned ?

I have to agree with Vikster. How many of us would REALISTICALLY have worn our mother's dresses? (I'd be interested to hear about those who have, and also those hitchers who said they want to save it for their daughter who aren't wearing their mum's and why!)

I fitted into my mum's (and she was married 45 years ago!), but even though I would and could have worn it (but without the sleeves) and it would have made her so proud if I'd worn it, I wanted one of my own. I imagine most daughters would feel the same. A lot of the dresses I've seen on here are quite 'en vouge' and unlikely to be deemed fashionable/suitable in 25+ years. Just think back to the style of the 80's wedding dresses.....! Enough said!

SNAP!!! I cant think what to do with it other than clean it up and sell it, thats if anyone wants it. Its just taking up valuable wardrobe space

This is my point i feel bad just storing it especially if it's really expensive, but i don't think i'll be able to part with it after the wedding just because it's MY dress ☹️

This is exactly my thinking. I'm not going to stash mine away in the attic forever and a day for it to never be worn by anyone else - seems a waste really.

I'm having a trash the dress shoot and then if I can get it cleaned up I'll sell mine and let someone else have some joy out of it.

I bought mine new from landy bridal for £130 ish, the day after the wedding it was sprayed with stain remover and chucked in the washing machine, it came out perfect and is now stored in its zip up cotton bag!

I wouldnt get anything for it back because you cant give away 2nd hand wedding dresses now you can get them so cheap so its just being kept as a keep sake. Maybe when i have my little girl christened i will think about having her dress made but who knows!!

See this is why I'm having separates that I will be able to wear again! I still have my first wedding dress, complete with 2 matching Bridesmaids dresses that I can't sell.

So this time I chose a corset and skirt I can use again after the wedding for special occasions. I may cut the skirt short though.

BTW my mum cut up her wedding dress to make a Christening gown that I wore, as was the custom in the 60s and 70s (my sister wasn't Christened until she was 13 so she never got to use it) and she still has that! Me & my sister used to use her vein for dressing up as kids too.

I think it depends on the fashion at the time though. For example, lots of us on here have parents who married in the 80's when there was a high-fashion style of long sleeves, puffy shoulders and unflattering cuts. Wedding dresses from the 50's were gorgeous and would look amazing on an hourglass figure, 60's styles were experimental but still cool and would look lovely on women with a more boyish figure, 70's styles look great on tall women, etc. I think the dress I have chosen is timeless and is simple enough to be customised to suit changing trends. if my future daughter(s) doesn't want to wear it then I won't be offended, but I will keep it just in case.
