What are you getting your Granny for Christmas?

Lady Falafel, 4 October, 2008 at 19:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

I'm lacking inspiration. In the past i've got her a nice food hamper (but have then received the pickles etc back later in the year), nice sets of soaps as she just had her bathroom redone. She seems to have no interest in nice treat type things (foodie, clothing or accessories.

I'm thinking of a fancy stationery set, but my mum keeps going on about how few friends she has, although not sure how true that is.

Inspire me, what goes down well with yours?

This is not going to be much help to you but I'm getting my Nannan a large vase with woodland animal on it that matches a smaller one she has as she's been complaining that people buy her bunches of flowers and she's not got a large vase to put them in. So we found one at an antiques place and just hope she likes it.

What about some nice slippers or a cosy dressing gown?

An old newspaper from when she was younger, that went down very well with my FIL in the past.

Or photo of you/the family, in a nice frame.

Last year I bought her some photo frames with both my and my sister's weddings pics in.

She doesn't go out much, so I often buy things for her home - nice cushions, scented candles, vases. Other than that it would be dressing gown, slippers, etc and occassionally I have given her perfume.

And Elizabeth Shaw mint chocs. Every year without fail or I won't hear the end of it.

My Grandma loves Crabtree and Evelyn stuff so I'm going to get her a big box of that.

A Perry Como CD and probably some old films on DVD. It's very difficult to buy for her, so sometimes I get her some bulbs or seeds and nice planters.

My one remaining granny will be having a lovely bouquet of flowers delivered to her a week or so before christmas so she can enjoy then for a coupl eof weeks over christmas and new year. She loves flowers and no longer has a garden to grow her own so having cut fresh flowers in the house is the next best thing!

My two Nan's are SO different.

One, I am likely to buy writing paper/diary/stationery for. The other is still dead modern and I like to buy her a gift but she'd prefer to have a ticket to a show or be taken out for a meal.

It's my Nan's birthday on Christmas Day, and every year we are stuck on what to buy her. She has no room left for photo frames, and is shortly moving into a small sheltered accomodation bungalow, so is really having to clear out her house of nik-naks too.

She's told all 9 grandchildren that all she wants for Christmas/Birthday is talc. She's going to end up with a lot of talc! ?

I'm going to watch this thread for more inspiration. Sorry, that's not very helpful for the OP is it.?

Buying for grans is so hard. We always used to make sweets, chocolates, jams etc for mine. THere was nothing she wanted, she had 2 children and 5 grandchildren (and about 5 great grand children I think) getting her presents, so that pretty much covered her favourite tipple, smellies etc.

Last year I bought mine a bulb and pot set from M&S. I used to buy her smellies but then she gave me a bottle of Christmas bubble bath in March saying she never used bubble bath so I took the hint... The flowers were irises btw and her name is Iris so I thought that was rather nice. This year it will be something great-grandchild related I think (hurrah for small children).

We're ordering our grans (and a great auntie) a personalised photo calendar. All the grandkids birthdays on it, along with a 'scenery' photo from our PAW (photo a week) for each month - with photos of the little grandkids for the month that their birthdays fall on.

One of my grans likes jigsaws so i got her that for her birthday. We also get them a box of shortbread in fancy tins - i think they like the tins more than the shortbread as they can use them as cake tins through the year.

Other presents have included Catherine Cookson books (!), dressing gown, one of those trays with a cushion attached and a microwaveable hot cushion thing and fancy chocolates.

I used to get my Grandma the latest Fireman calendar or any calendar with a man who had a cute butt. It made her year!

There was one occasion when she locked herself out. I think she was about 82 at the time and was mortified when the neighbour got step ladders out for fear that he might see the calender that she got years before but was stuck on the man with the cute butt!

My Gran passed away this year, but I will always think about her and naughty calenders that I bought each year.

My granny always asked for 'a nice bottle of scent' and Oil of Ulay for christmas. When she died, we found 5 bottles of Oil of Ulay in a cupboard. ?

Other than that, my cousin and I would get her things like 'rouge' (it had t be a particular one though), umbrellas or gloves. Really not very inspired!

One year, I decided verge off the usual presents and got her a tape player and ceilidh tapes as she loved that kind of music but it was never listened to. ?

Waaaah, that's brilliant! ? Your Grandma sounds a scream!

    Completely irrelevant to this thread but thought I would share this anyway;
I remember plucking up the courage when my grannny was about 85 to ask if she wouldn't like to find a male companion (like her sister had recently) to take her dancing (she danced at least 3 times a week, even at 85) but her answer was "well, I widnae mind being wined and dined, or taken tae the dancing but nae sex, I'm far tae auld for sex". ?

We have been told not to buy my grandparents anything, but they will get a little something from Jessica, probably a photo of her, or us as a family.

Last year we did photobox style books for my dad and grandparents of Jessica's first 6 months and they all loved them.

The most popular present I got my Nan was a Victorian Style Photoalbum (the type where the pages are thick card and have holes for the photos to be slotted in) - I got photos of her chidlren/grandchildren and great grandchildren and filled the album for her.

I try each year to get my Nan something different - after spending 20 Christmas's with her I saw how many biscuits/smelly stuff etc that she got and didn't really appreciate.

This year I've bought her 2 chiffon scarves - I'm then going to make her some fudge and frame a photo of my children (my 3rd Child is due end of November so hoping to get a photo of the 3 of them together).

Depending on budget obviously would your Granny appreciate a Bird Table? My Parents bought her a bird table one year - or maybe a bird box - you can get quite a cool one called a Bird Ball - think its about £30.

Also photo calenders have been quite popular in the past.

Nun, she sounds like a laugh!

My gran has just moved into frail care so I think I will skip the present this year and take her out for a special outing of some sort. There's an old tea room she use to go too that she might like for lunch. Will have to see how feasible it is for her now.

In the past I have given her framed family pics, which she loved. Also, I took all of her photo's out of her boxes and cupboards and drawers and put them into a huge album for her.

Another hit was a simple plastic jug with a lid, which I filled with bird seed as she loves feeding the birds in the gardens near her. She enjoyed that and we used to top it up for her now and again.

She also loves to be taken out for a mani or pedi, as she can't really look after that for herself anymore.

One year (when we lived in the UK) I sent her some audio books and a selection of M&S biscuits and snacks. I found out later that she tried to take the audio tapes 'back' over here in South Africa. ?
