what are you reading?

janeyh, 22 September, 2008 at 22:22 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 61

I am reading the evil seed at the minute -

have recently read a lot of ok but slightly disappointing books (probably because i grabbed them off the shelf at asda)

can you recommend me gripping and non mind numbing books of fabulousness

(nothing with anything resembling 'please daddy no' etc in the title or by jodie picoult)

thanks

Probably not at all what you are looking for but I've just finished reading Len 'Head Judge' Goodman's autobiography. I read it in a day! Interesting read though.

I'm now on Craig Revel Horwood's book. It's longer than Len's and more interesting but Len's was good.

I've not read a fiction book since 'Curious Incident of the dog in the night time' several years ago!

I'm reading Lionel Shriver's "The Post-Birthday World". It's a love it or hate it book - I'm liking it a lot.

I'm re-reading a book by Abby Lee, Girl with a one track mind....probably not what you're looking for, but I enjoyed it the first time I read it and thought I'd re-read it.

Probably not what you're after, but I'm reading this:

One you might like though, which I read about a year ago, is this one:

I just read 'Goodnight Beautiful' by Dorothy Koomson-- brilliant and made me cry (first book ever that I can remember).

I am just about to start reading her book 'The Cupid Effect'

I've just finished "The Model Wife" by Julia Llewellyn which was a dead easy read but quite enjoyable all the same - chick lit if you like.

Now i'm reading Richard Hammond's book, it's been around the house since I got it for Mr Dooby's birthday last yearish and i'm only just getting around to reading it.

    I'm currently reading

And on a slightly more highbrow note

I just finished, and very much enjoyed Elisabeth Luard's My Life As A Wife: or Love Liquor and What To Do About The Other Women, a follow up to her marvellous Family Life.

I'me reading Andrew Marr's History of Modern Britain, and really enjoying it (I know nothing about Britain).

I have recently enjoyed The Time-Traveller's Wife, Kite Runner, Gridlock by Ben Elton. I read a book called 'When We Were Bad' by Charlotte Mendelson which had loads of favourable reviews yet didn't do much for me.

If you like the York notes you should try the actual book ?

Seriously though, I studied Maya Angelou at A level and I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings has been my absolute favourite book ever since.

I've just finished The Model Wife and Goodnight Beautiful (Tesco 2 for £7!), The Model Wife was an easy but not altogether predicatble read, and I've just come back downstairs for cuddles with H because I was crying so much by the time I'd finished Goodnight Beautiful. So don't read if you're in anyway hormonal or just in fact human.

I finished 'The Memory Keepers Daughter' earlier this month which was rather good. Unfortunatley I have then proceeded to re-read Stephen Kings Dark Tower series again but have nearly finished it. I have a copy of the Post Birthday World, but I struggled to get into it - might have to give that another go!

I'm currently reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell which looks like a good 'un. The last one I finished was The Seige of Krishnapur by J G Farrell which was not really my kind of thing but well written.

I've nearly finished Rose Tremain's The Way I Found Her, which is excellent. Before that I read Austin Grossman's Soon I Will Be Invincible, which is a very funny postmodern-ish superhero novel, very entertaining. And before thats I read The Girls, by Lori Lansen and Gods Behaving Badly, by Marie Phillips, both of which were recommended on here and both great.

I really liked The Post-Birthday World as well.

Cloud Atlas was on my list that I went to the library with on Sunday. Unfortunately I got waylaid by a whole heap of 'new reads' and ended up coming home with 7 books that weren't on my list ?

I am currently reading Joanne Harris 'The Lollipop Shoes', and got through Phillip Pullman 'The Ruby in the Smoke' on Sunday.

I'm reading "What I talk about when I talk about running" by Haruki Murukami. If you're not into running, it might not be for you as it's his running-related memoirs - but he's a fantastic author, I absolutely love the way he writes. Mr W has read one of his other books called "Norweigan Wood" and said it's really good, so I'll be onto that one next.

I've just finished The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid, which was excellent. The Outcast by Sadie Jones is also good, but pretty dark.

I'm re-reading Jude The Obscure again for the millionth time - it's wonderful.

My beach reads this year were everything Mike Gayle has ever written. They're all a real easy-read and nice to have an bit of an alternative to chick-lit.

I'm reading The Confusion by Neal Stephenson for about the 5th time, it's the second in the Baroque Cycle, I do enjoy them.

Also reading Canal Dreams by Iain Banks, I'm not far into it but it hasn't grabbed me the way most of his other books do.

Oooh not read that one by him, will have to chase it up. He's one of my fav authors. My fav book of his is the Wind-up Bird Chronicles but I've enjoyed everything by him I've read.

I've just found the joys of Carl Hiaasen, not sure how I missed him before but I'm reading through his back catalogue and loving it.

I've just finished The Last Wife of Henry VIII by Carolly Erickson, which I bought on a whim on holiday. It was good although I still prefer Phillipa Gregory and Alison Weir's novels. I am now reading something like Shoe Addicts Anonymous, which is turning out to be your basic chick lit, but I wanted something non taxing.

    Currently reading:

Memnoch The Devil (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Memnoch-Devil-5-Vampire-Chronicles/dp/0099603713/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222180238&sr=1-1) Am re-reading Rice's Vampire Chronicles for probably the 20th time

    Sitting waiting to be read:

Affluenza (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Affluenza-Oliver-James/dp/0091900107) picked up at random from Waterstones

Critical Thinking: A Concise Guide (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Critical-Thinking-Concise-Guide-Second/dp/0415343135/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222180154&sr=1-8) bought on recommendation after I'd read a similar book in the past which was tiny and too brief for my tastes

also have to finish Cooper's The Time Waster Letters, which had me (literally) crying with laughter and unable to breathe whilst reading extracts to H last week. See http://www.amazon.co.uk/Timewaster-Letters-Robin-Cooper/dp/1843171694/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1222180363&sr=1-1 for an extract; it gets more surreal and funnier the further in you travel. Excellent stuff.

I read Air Mail by Terry Ravenscroft, a couple of months ago. It's similar to the Time Waster Letter but are letters sent to airlines. Very funny.

I've just read the Stuart Marconie Pies & Prejudice which I really enjoyed.

Am currently reading 'Marjorie Morningstar' which was actually first published in teh 1950s but caught my eye with a shiny cover in the library ?. I've really got in to this and has got me interested in slightly more 'intellectual' writing compared to the chick-lit dross that I tend to pick up and skim through in an evening or two.
