What are you reading?

Peaches, 28 November, 2008 at 13:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 22

I've almost finished a wonderfully inspiring book a friend gave me for my birthday. Thought I'd share it with you ...

The Last Lecture (Really Achieving your Childhood Dreams) - Randy Pausch

On his website you can also watch the video of his Last Lecture. I've only managed to watch half of it so far, but when Mr P goes back to work next week I'll have time to watch the rest.

What are you reading?

I'm reading Tony Visconti's autobiography. I'm really enjoying it. He's led a very interesting life. Can't wait to get to the Morrissey bits! Though loving all his Bowie info too.

I'm reading this at the moment. Gripping stuff, if slightly unbelievable in parts.

I'm reading my first Hemingway, For Whom The Bell Tolls. I'm enjoying it but so far it's definitely not a 'wow' book, unlike the first Hardy I read recently, The Mayor of Casterbridge, which I loved.

I'm reading two books at the moment. One is a compilation of MR James' ghost stories and the other is another compilation, but this time by HP Lovecraft.

There are a plethora of books out here about BO, but for some strange reason I've not been compelled to buy one. Although I'd like to read one in due course. Any good?

I'm reading Iain Banks' "The Steep Approach to Garbadale" which I'm really enjoying. Not much liked any of his since "The Crow Road" so this is a nice surprise.

I'm currently re-reading all of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series, this time slotting the short stories in the correct places, except I haven't yet worked out where the novella 'Micah' sits in the sequence 'cause I haven't read it.

I haven't got up to the bit where it all goes weird and Anita turns into a nymphomaniac - that's at about book 10...

I'm finsishing off Chris Brookmyres new un which is fab, as the all are.. A Snowball in Hell .. it is called but it is part of a set.

Also waiting for the newest Stephanie Plum book by Janet Evanovich to turn up from Amazon.. Completly opposite to Brookmyre but also quite fun.. more chick lit like :-)

I've just finished "A Mother Like Alex" - it's one of the most inspiring books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I'm not a fluffy person at all but it's had me sobbing in parts - happy sobbing ?

It's a true account of a woman who adopted 7 children with special needs, and cared for 2 others - most of them Downs children. An absolutely remarkable lady with so much strength and spirit.

There is an article in the Daily Mail about her today; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1090103/Why-I-Downs-syndrome-baby-adoption--loving-mother-took-in.html

I really want to watch the documentary on her next week but we haven't got Sky.

Ooh - I read an article in the Sky Mag about this. It was an interview with the biological mother of one of the boys Alex adopted - it had been an open adoption so she could keep in touch with her son. That article had me sobbing, and my husband has banned me from watching the documentary. The book would have me in bits...

I've just read this book as well and also sobbed the whole way through. I couldn't watch the documentary either. Alex Bell is an amazing woman but I also think that Sue was brave - not for her decision, but for opening herself up in the newspaper article and the book. Some of the comments that people have made on the Daily Mail article are mind-boggling.

I loved this; although I found the style a bit hard going and stilted at first I came to realise that this was entirely appropriate and reflected the character. As the character became less uptight so did the style, and I have really enjoyed reading it.

I'm reading "Call if the Weird" by Louis Theroux. If you like his Weird Weekend TV series, then you'll like the book as it's him returning to America to catch up with some of the people featured in his documentaries and find out what's been happening.

I saw Louis Theroux for the first time interviewing and shadowing Jimmy Savile, and I'm afraid it scarred me for life! I found him highly irritating, lacking social skills and in-your-face, so since then I've not given him the time of day and read or watched anything with him in. From the odd comment I've picked up on Hitched, I'm in the minority, so perhaps someday I'll give him 5 minutes and see if I still find him annoying.

Same goes for Jim Carrey. I saw The Mask. Hated it. Can't watch anything with him in without my skin crawling (although I've had to watch as Mr P likes him .. his straight roles weren't as bad)
