What are you reading at the moment?

DIJ, 9 July, 2008 at 15:06 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 32

I've just had a spurt of reading Elvis based biographies finishing with 'Elvis and Me' by Priscilla Presley.

Need a complete change and some inspiration so what are you reading right now?

A book called destinations by Sheila O'Flanaghan, it's a book of short stories based on lives of people who use the dart in Ireland.

    Hitched. Duh. ?

"A piano in the Pyrenees" by Tony Hawk. I loved "Round Ireland with a Fridge" so much that I thought I'd give it a whirl. It's most amusing so far.

I'm reading a book a friend sent me over from the States - it's called "My Lobotomy" and it's the autobiography of a chap who, at the age of 12 (!), was given a lobotomy by a doctor working on the instructions of his stepmother who thought it would "fix" his behavioural problems. I'm a few chapters in and it's heartbreaking already.

I am now reading Harry Potter, I have just started the first one.

Before this I read the whole "Shopaholic" series by Sophie Kinsella which I loved, "Bad Behaviour" by Shelia Flanagan, "The California Club", "The Love Academy", Diva's Las Vegas" and "I Love Capri" by Belinda Jones which were fab.

Non fiction I have read books about Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, Gazza, Steptoe and Son ?, Paul Sculthorpe, Barrie McDermott and a book on the history of York CIty FC.

I have been off work a long time ?

I have just finished "The Reavers" by George MacDonald Fraser. Much fun, particularly when extracting the michael from Borders folk. oh, and the faux posh kelvinside accent of one of the characters. considering moving on to The Pyrates or the first Flashman book shortly.

in the meantime, i'm reading "secret diary of a demented house wife" and "confessions of a demented housewife" by niamh greene (picked up in Cork airport just before i said hello to paul weller. who i do not know.) which are an ok read - sort of bridget jones meets shopaholic really.

am also going to read "Race to Dakar" once himself has finished it. not just to look at the charley boorman photos but to read about motorbikes and stuff. ? who am i kidding. it is just for the photos.

Are they about the same person? I read Secret Diary of a Demented Housewife and althought ridiculously trashy I enjoyed it. Only problem was I managed to read it in a day on holiday and left myself short of books! ?

I'm reading "the book of Dave" by Will Self for the second time. The phonetic mokni makes my head hurt but I think it deserves a second read. Weird but good.

Incidentally I read all the flashman books when I was about 14 when I discovered them lurking on my parent's bookshelves. I was most put out when I found out that they weren't real, but they are a very good rollicking read!

I am reading Love in the Time of Cholera at the moment. It's ok, but not really holding my attention too well.

Before that I read For My Baby by Tony Parsons (I think that was what it was called) and Kate Remembered, Katharine Hepburn biography by A. Scott Berg. I really loved that.

I've just finished America Unchained by Dave Gorman - it's similar to 'Round Ireland with a fridge' so the hitcher who is reading that should give it a go! Dave Gorman basically attempts to drive coast to coast in America without giving any money to 'The Man' - so only using independent petrol stations, hotels and stores. Fascinating journey and would not be possible in this country I don't think (well if we were the size of America anyway!). Just about to start The Kite Runner.

At the minute I'm reading Suite Francaise by Irene somebody (can't be bothered to move to look at the book, sorry) and am finding it hard to get into tbh. Before that I read Random Acts of Heroic Love by Danny Scheinmann which I really enjoyed, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak which made me bawl, and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne which didn't, but I sat without moving for quite a while after I finished it.

I've just finished Ben Elton's 'Blind Faith', which was rather strange and depressing. Not entirely sure whether I enjoyed it or not. Before that, I read 'Tne End of Mr Y' by Scarlett Thomas, which was very enjoyable.

Currently I'm reading 'The Sanctuary' by Raymond Khoury, which isn't my normal reading matter (I think I bought it in desperation at the supermarket on a Friday night when I didn't have anything to see me through until Saturday when Waterston's opened), It's ok but not exactly literary fiction ? .

Another rec for The Book Thief here - absolutely fab (and it made me bawl too!)

My reading pile is about 4 months old due to over-work, but I have Random Acts of Heroic Love next, along with A Quiet Belief in Angels - RJ Ellory, Barefoot in the Dark - Lynne Barrett Lee and The Two Ronnies autobiog which I started but couldn't get into as I couldn't really relate to much of the info.

Am in the middle of Slam by Nick Hornby atm, which is enjoyable and not too heavy going and have just finished Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett.

I've just finished "Williams's Wife" but I can't remember who it is by. It was about William & Mary and them coming to power. I seem to have got into historical novels recently. I've also read a lot of Agatha Christie books. I've been going to the library and taking advantage of the fact that I can now get out 12 books at a time rather than 8 - hurrah!

I'm reading The Girls by Lori Lansens and I can't put it down. In fact I'm going to stop hitching in a bit and go to bed early with my book as I want to finish it. It's a fictional book written from the point of view of 29 year old conjoined twins.

I am half way through Dexter in the Dark by Jeff Lindsay - the third in the series about a serial killer who kills other serial killers - the tv series is being shown at the moment.

It is really good, but not something I would have chosen if I hadn't seen the show, only reason I am taking so long to read it is because it is hard back and I find it difficult to read in bed!?

I'm currently reading 'Watching the English' by Kate Fox which is fascinating so far (and reminds me a fair bit of Hitched!).

Before that I also read 'A Piano in the Pyrenees' which I really got into. Also 'In the footsteps of Harrison Dextrose' which was bizarre and funny and a good holiday read; 'Further under the duvet' by Marian Keyes and Rupert Everett's autobiog which was far too luvvie at time.

I'm also on-and-off reading Secrets and Lies by Bruce Schneier, for work.

Just finished 'Swaheli for the broken hearted' about a guy who travels from Cape Towm to Cairo after splitting up with his girlfriend. He'd written a previous book on travelling South America with said GF so will look for that one next. Really enjoyed this, had some laugh out loud moments. He describes visiting Zimbabwe in about 2002 and the problems with inflation and immense poverty, so you can only imagine what it is like now.

Have just started a trashy one, something like 'Disco on an open top bus' (it's upstairs). Read the first chapter but not really in to this at the moment. Will give it a few more chapters.

I'm currently getting through one or two a week, having rediscovered the library last year. I was getting to the stage of spending silly amounts on books i'd only read once or twice. Now it's the library or charity shops, with new buys reserved only for garden or cookery ones.
