What are your Hitched pet peeves?

Newbies claiming they are being bullied because sometimes us miserable oldies don't agree with something they've posted.... and give our honest opinions.... oh the shame!

Pedantic hitchers who point out spelling mistakes.

    Text speak - wtf!

any posters that are me me me me me!!

I don't have one either, but as I never got around to adding my name to the 2012 bride list, I think I can survive without one! I think a separate forum for GL threads would be great as then brides whose wedding dates are coming up can check theirs, but it won't block up the first couple of pages of this forum. There are a nice idea though!

This is why it annoys me lol. People use 'and I' to sound intellectual or posh. The rule is to take the other person out and see if what you're left with makes sense.

Thanks for inviting John and I to your wedding. Thanks for inviting I to your wedding. Wrong.

Me and John would love to come to you wedding. Me would love to come to your wedding. Just, no.

That is such a good way to remember it! My grammar (I think) is fairly good, but this one has always confused me.

Actually, I'm much calmer now with 7 and a bit weeks to go, than I was with a year to go. The most stressful part was definitely the beginning for me. Arguments over the guestlist, why your granny's best friends' cousin hasn't been invited etc...

I don't mind forum abbreviations (WSS, IYKWIKM etc) but I literally can't stand LOL, LMFAO, PMSL etc etc.

That's one of mine too! Speaking of which - to and too is another one as in I want to move house but the house I want is too expensive.

Oops, ? this is me. I try to reply to everyone but sometimes I post when something's hot on my mind, I get loads of useful responses and by the time I've considered them, discussed them with OH and acted on them I don't get back to Hitched - and one thing that annoys me is resurrecting old posts and that would be me (Lame excuse methinks?)

Proper apology and thank you to all those that have helped me over the past few months - invaluable, the lot of you ?

I try not to use them, but some people get narky very quickly if they read things in a different tone to that intended and I get bored of Smiley smile and ha ha. They're not abbreviations though, are they? I can't think of the actual word.

I have to add, everyone on this forum seems to be very articulate; especially compared to some, where text speak seems to be the norm!

Also, definitely guilty of the "x x x" at the end of messages...force of habit!

People that start endless posts but never bother to come back and reply.

People that start endless posts but never bother to reply to anyone else's.

    The fluff. Xxxx, hun etc.

People that put LOL at the end if every reply. Is it really that funny?

    Text speak

No paragraphs, it makes my eyes hurt

The HELP!!!!!!!!!!! threads. Calm down and lay off the exclamation marks.

People asking opinions and getting upset with the answers. It's an Internet forum, don't ask if you won't like the replies.

    Asking for advise. It's advice!

That's the one! Thanks Smiley smile

Thinking about it, when it's just letters it's still an abbreviation, isn't it? An acronym is only when the abbreviation makes a new word like sonar and radar. Lol could be counted as one providing you say it loll not el oh el, the same as Americans or militaries or something say a-sap instead of ay es ay pee.

I thought an abbreviation was a shortened word e.g. Mr instead of Mister, and Dr instead of Doctor. An acronym is using the letters of the words e.g. NSPCC or RSPCA.

Personally I don't like LOL, but I do sometimes use it just to show something is not meant to be serious, and ha ha can sound quite sarcastic. Sometimes it's hard to get things across with the right tone on a forum post or text and things can easily be taken the wrong way. Maybe I should use smiley faces, but they can be irratating also

I think "haha" is far more appropriate than "lol". When you really do laugh out loud, the noise you make isn't "LOL", it's "hahahahahahaha". So typing that is perfectly acceptable, in my humble cabbage.

If something isn't funny, just don't type anything at all.

My dad told me to be quiet, lol. So we argued, lol. And then he hit me, lol. Really? You *actually* laughed out loud at all of those? I think not.

Another grammar/spelling Nazi here, I'm afraid, although I do try to keep it quiet. I just have the occasional nervous twitch when reading the forum, Facebook, The Daily Mail...

I really don't mind TLAs* at all, and text-speak can be permissible if used in the correct context. I only have an issue when I feel words/punctuation/grammar is being used incorrectly because the author is incapable of writing something with correct structure. So, honest typos I can cope with, confusion of "it's" and "its", "your" and "you're", "to" and "too", "now" and "know"; these all set my teeth grinding. Which is a shame, because you see them all the time, and dentists are expensive.

Here's another that gets my dentist clapping with excitement at the large paycheque they're going to be receiving soon. Literally? Really?

A few that I just found on a quick search:

"There is literally no-one here today!" ... Liar. You are.

"milk literally everywhere" ... HELP! We're all going to drown in milk!!!

"I literally spent the whole week in our private pool" ... Wow. Didn't you go really wrinkly? And that means ... ew, gross ... you must have peed in there!!!

Forgive my ramblings. I shall go now. I think I'm going to (literally?) spontaneously combust if I keep pondering on this. ?

    * Yes, I see the irony. I really do.

Yep I must admit I'm a bugger for that. Although I'd never use it in the other situations you pointed out. When I say I literally can't stand it, I mean because it physically makes me annoyed. I visibly cringe. Still not correct though, I agree.

The one that really gets on my nerves is when people say "would of" instead of "would have". E.g. "I would of gone running, but it was raining"

Probably already been mentioned but people who cannot distinguish between 'their, there and they're' and 'your and you're'. I know not everyone is perfect and I don't pick people up on it, but I do get a bit of a nervous twitch when I see it.

Most of the above mentioned but especially -

    Hearting threads.

    Lolling, babes, x'es, huns.

People getting stropping and throwing their dummies out the pram when asking for opinions and getting ones they don't like.

But my main one is punctuation!! Use full stops and commas!
