What are your mens rings like?

teeheeyoucrazyguys!, 30 March, 2009 at 19:38 Posted on Planning 0 14

And what did the jeweller tell you would happen over time??

We were told - dont go for brushed metals as they will become shiny soon enough, dont go for machined grooves as they wont last long and patterns will fade over time too.

OH doesnt want a plain shiney ring! Nor do we want to spend 800 bucks or so on a ring which over time will lessen in quality and therefore we coulda just bought a cheaper version etc etc etc....

in a right quandry.....

H2B has brushed metals and grooves. I've paid for the ring, he can pay for the upkeep!

BTW, I've had two glasses of Chablis so I'm going to admit to smirking at the title of your post...

    <snigger snigger>

H2B hasn't got his yet but think he will most likely go for plain 5mm court - which sounds exactly what your OH doesn't want so probably not much help....

He is not fussed about platinum and jeweller mentioned that if he goes for white gold he will likely have to have it recoloured every 18 months or so.

My OH wouldn't entertain the idea of £800 for a plain shiny platinum band (even though I paid - but still - there are a lot of other things we could spend that money on that would make a big difference, so if he wasn't bothered about it being platinum, neither was I!)

He looked at a few white gold ones, but wasn't that keen on it looking grubby and tatty as the rhodim coating comes off. So he got a palladium one in the end - looks exactly like platinum, very similar properties, very cheap (Well, £275, but a LOT less than platinum, and looks identical). Its not very exciting - just looks like a shiny 5ml ring to me - but a platinum one would look the same and cost a lot more. twas Ernest Jones - bespoke type jewellers don't tend to deal in palladium as it is not hallmarked 9though is a noble metal).

Mine is also just a plain band - but in platinum - not too pricey as I only wanted 2mm - from Waltons of Chester. I tried on a few blingy ones with diamonds in, but they just looked rubbish next to my lovely engagement ring, so I went for simplicity in the end.

My h2b has gone a wide 9ct gold band think it might be 6mm, he has very wide and chunky carrot fingers so a small narrow ring would not like right on his hand. He has a single diamond in it in the centre which is very delicate but sets the ring of from overs. It cost us £200 to be made and £50 for the diamond well, worth it.

This is our rings (but in white gold) in all honesty no-one mentioned upkeep as we bought them over the net, (mine is the one with the diamonds), we have a mixture of all the things you said Nona, brushed, shiny and grooves but will pay for the upkeep when the time comes if need be, just like the ER ring ?

This is dp's: It's brushed titanium. He didn't want a shiny one as he's a builder and doesn't want to take it off for work. We know that at some point we'll probably have to replace it, or he'll have to get another job ?!! It was only £60 from Ernest Jones, felt a little guilty that it was so cheap.

The ONLY ring mr chicken has seen that he likes is £4.89

Although i appreciate his thriftiness, i was hoping to spend a little more!!

Problem is we can get stuff that fits him. He has large knuckles and small fingers.

H's ring is very unusual. We bought both our wedding rings in Turkey in 2007 so way before we got married, we got married in 2008 but we knew that we'd get more for our money out there. H has an 18ct white and yellow gold ring. Imagine the top bits of a castle in chess, his is like that but two of the chess piece are put together to make a ring and then one bit of it is yellow gold and one bit is white gold. Sorry that's a crap description i know.

You can't really see it that well on this picture either

The reality is that any jewellery that you wear everyday will need some maintenance over time. Platinum will need to be re-polished, white gold will need a new rhodium plate (assuming it had rhodium in the first place). A brushed finish will deteriorate, and will need to be re-brushed, while a shiny finish will lose its lustre and need to be repolished.

None of these processes are difficult, and they should not be expensive. Speak to your jeweller before you buy and check what he charges for these services.

    Good luck!

We are having them made. In London. We design it from rings we have seen and they make it. So any upkeep would be an arse, lol. Sure, I can have them polished but would be loathe to hand in another jewellers work to a diffy, local jeweller.

I'm having a plain 3mm platinum band and he wants platinum too. I've mentioned the other metals to him but he wants platinum. Cheers for the replies, I'm sure we will get there in the end.
