What can you keep down when you're ill?

PhoebeBuffay, 18 April, 2008 at 19:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

I'm not very well and have been throwing up quite alot and not really keeping anything down. I have an appointment with my GP next week but I have a feeling it'll be gone by them. Friends have had the same thing.

I've kept down a bowl of fruit n fibre and glass of milk with a strawberry nesquick straw but obviously can't live on that.

Making food makes me feel sick and I'll retch and be sick [V]

Bananas, Rice, Apples and Toast are all meant to be good for sickness - just stick to really plain things and eat little but often (if you can manage it). A couple of days not eating will be ok though - more important to keep your fluids up. How long have you been poorly?

    Hope you feel better soon!

I always avoid milky things when I'm sick so couldn't have eaten what you have. If you've managed to keep that down then I think you are ok.

I drink plenty of water, and if I can take it, a couple of really plain biscuits like rich tea.

Other than that I don't think it does much harm not to eat so long as you have plenty of water.

Maybe you should try to not eat until the sick feeling passes. I think being sick means your body is trying get get rid of something so you could just sip water for a while.

Oh no hope you feel better soon ?

if im really ill i normally go for about 24hrs without food to try and starve it, then i stick to dry toast, or with a teeny tiny bit of jam or marmalade something like that, or sometimes i have a little bit of soup - i try to stick to plain stuff... ❤️

Try some toast, maybe some light chicken soup? brothy, not creamy.

Mum always says not to have milk with an upset tummy, but grandparents swear by it...confusing!

I've been being sick since Wednesday evening, I rang my GP yesterday and they have me in next Thursday. I rang back today and spoke to a nurse, who told me to eat plain food little and often, but literally everything I eat seems to be coming back up.

I love cups of tea and can't make it or drink it either [xx(]

It sounds horrible but K is so affectionate but I just couldn't stand to have him all over me earlier.

Just to add as well, I haven't eaten since last night, couldn't eat this morning and have been dossing on the sofa most of the day. I had the bowl of fruit n fibre about 5.30ish. I spoke to Mum who said not to drink milk but then my gran called and said to drink some so it lines my stomach ?

I've tried making toast, I tried making a cup of soup. The smells etc just made me gag and retch, including when I was making K's dinner.

I usually go for plain white rice when I am ill, as cdigesting it takes no effort (and...tmi...it isn't too vile if yonking it up again)

This is what I was thinking about the cereal and about other things that I've been eating. It hasn't been that bad throwing it up again, however all day I've had nothing to throw up and it's been that orangey, acid burning throat stuff [V]

If I can't face eating anything then I don't. I figure it's sometimes good to listen to my body.

Usually the first thing I can manage is toast. Marmite toast is great for me when I've not been well. Also things like clementines or satsumas.

But I'd say just go with a bit of what you fancy. If you fancy eating something, then that's probably going to be easier to keep down than something you can't face.

I would steer clear of cereals if you are acidy or biley, and, obviously, make sure you drink plenty of water (sips)
