What did you used to do for halloween when you were a kid?

mrs toosh, 31 October, 2011 at 17:16 Posted on Planning 0 7

I just had some kids knock on the door trick or treating....Puddy is out with her friends doing the same and it made me think....when we were kids we never went trick or treating....but mum used to do us an early bonfire party and we would make our guy like a witch and have hot dogs and beans and jacket spuds....and dad used to put a big picture of my grandmother close to the fire so us kids wouldnt go near it.....yes she is a witch?......

Am I the only one who has never been trick or treating?☹️

We never went trick or treating... we went guising (ie same thing but without the nasty threat of eggs and toilet paper!!) Oh, and we recited jokes or silly halloween poems/rhymes too, didn't just stand there and expect something for nothing

We moved house when I was about 4, the area we lived in before that mum let us all go round all the houses collecting a handful of monkey nuts, an apple or a 10/20p from each of them. Can you imagine the reaction most kids would give to that now? I only (obviously) have a very vague recollection of that. After that we were only allowed to go to certain houses, 20 minute trek over to my grandads was essential and there were only about 4 or 5 homes with kids that mum felt were 'safe' to visit.

I feel I should point out that I live in a fairly small town with a street full of lots of kindly elderly neighbours and that mum always came round with us so not like it was majorly dangerous. Not sure what her issue was really?

We also, once we were back in the house did dooking for apples (no cheating forks just a faceful of water and near drowning in the pursuit of an apple!) and always attempted to eat scones covered in treacle or jam hanging from a string with our hands behind our backs - sticky but very fun and best done before the dooking so you could wash the treacle off in the water!!

Its my Dad's birthday & my mum would always organise amazing parties! We'd decorate the house and loads of mum & dads friends would come with their children - Dad never got proper presents just silly tricks which we thought were brilliant.

Mum would organise loads of games apple bobbing, making mummies out of toilet roll, that game where u have to get dressed up then cut up chocolate with a knife & fork & the one where u balance a smartie on a mound of flour & take it in turns to cut it away - whoever makes the smartie fall has to eat it face first out of the flour.

We'd make Halloween food too; jelly with snakes & eyeball cup cakes etc.. too.

Mum & Dad are away on holiday today - I was just thinking how much I miss those times definitely going to do similar if we are lucky enough to have children ?

Thank you for the chance to reminiss ? But No we never did go trick or treating though.

Exactly the same as I do now - absolutely nothing.

I just hate having to sit here with the lights off for fear of getting your house/car/garden trashed because you refuse to answer the door to the gangs of junior extortionists.

My parents weren't really ones for tradition so if I ever did get to dress up I made a costume out of a bin liner lol, there was only 4 houses where I lived so not really much fun!
