What do men do as hobbies?

Fionka261, 4 January, 2009 at 20:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31

H is driving me mad. He works in IT and his job is a bit boring at the moment, changing jobs is not an option. Outside of work he mostly spends time gaming on the p.c or watching films, both of which involve sitting in front of a screen as he has been doing all day long at work. He does play golf but it's not really the weather for it at the moment.

I have more stuff to do than I can fit in to my days at the moment with work, 2nd job, volunteering, knitting, HPAD etc and really can't be entertaining him as well. He wants to start a new hobby but he doesn't know what, it also has to be something that doesn't cost too much money as we are trying to save.

So what do your Hs do for fun? Please give me some ideas to give to him before I kill him!

My H doesn't do sport but he does play poker, and he's a great cook and gardener. His friends do various things, off the top of my head: golf, writing, running (marathons etc), woodturning, Shiatsu massage, 5 a side, making homebrew, ummmm

My H's current hobbies are plumbing, electrics, plasterboarding and plastering (we're rebuilding our house and doing almost all of the work ourselves). He's also just finished an evening class in Children's Book Illustration which, like most things he tries, he's annoyingly good at.

His previous hobbies have including salsa dancing (he ended up co-running and teaching classes for a couple of years too), pottery, badminton, cross country running.

Has he thought of evening classes at your local adult ed place? Or volunteering? Have a look at Do It's website.

H runs once a week (usually Sunday morning) and as we have a dog, we go out for a good long walk (usually 10km) at least once at weekends if not on both days. He also listens to a lot of music, reads quite a bit and cooks most evenings for us. I have to say that he tends to work in the evenings quite often too though - just reading papers/articles he doesn't get a chance to during the day or preparing for meetings. He doesn't sit about doing nothing very often!

My hubby is a Software Engineer so I know where you're coming from. His main hobby is playing MMOs online, although in the summer months he plays Cricket. He also plays a lot of dungeons & Dragons/ Warhammer with chums, which is pretty much free.

My H has loads of hobbies, but sadly they all seem to cost money! Although I think thats more to do with his love of collecting 'things'

    Mountain Biking

    Fossil-hunting/Paleontology

    Car tinkering

Radio control model-making (cars, tanks etc)

Astronomy (just got a telescope so thats favourite right now)

    Fishing

    Photography

A little bit of antique/silver buying and selling

I feel sad that his hobbies are pretty solitary, I think it would be great if he got into something group/team based. He reads a lot about everything he's into as well - so our house is filled with books.

Surfing, football, mountain biking, swimming (with cubster), running (with cubster - in a buggy not with her running next to him), cooking, sometimes yoga, doing the recycling (? ok not really a hobby but it does take up an awful lot of his time ?)

My h works in IT and is sitting in front of me playing on the xbox as we speak ? so that suggestion's out...

he is an all-round techie and fixer, and enjoys helping with technical issues with a local amateur theatre company. most recently he was stage manager and it took a lot of his time. he likes playing on the wii fit, which counts as exercise to me as he is quite hardcore about it. neither of us is particularly outdoorsy but he used to do quite a bit of cycling.

i fancy taking up ballroom + latin dancing but i don't think he does ?

Hmmm, Mr JK and hobbies.....it's all a kind of extension of his work, which essentially is his hobby.

He watches films, writes about films and learns languages (currently Polish) that assist him in watching/writing/lecturing about film. It's all about film. That said, he also reads loads, and sees keeping abreast with current affairs as absolutely essential - not reading at least one broadsheet a day isn't an option.

Oh, and he likes listening to music. And going to the theatre.

Mr Layabout plays MMOs but also does gardening, photography, DIY, an OU course. Teenage son does historical re-enactment (NOT cheap and beyond nerdy) and Warhammer. Ummm, what about playing an instrument? Pub quiz? Five a side?

Mr Dooby works in a garage and is into cars so is quite happy to spend time cleaning, waxing, polishing his car (it's black and he likes it to look its best which involves quite a bit of work). Also he does motorsport rescue (he is a fully qualified MSA rescue licence holder) so he has training every first monday of the month and then they cover sprints, hillclimbs, motocross, rallies and any other motorsport related events in the Island...also he went as part of a team to the Rally GB a couple of months ago. Otherwise he likes building and playing with his model boats at the local model boat club, also doing bits and bobs around the house and garden and though he doesn't get much time he enjoys painting and drawing, he's quite good and it says it helps him chill out a bit.

My OH also like Xbox but since he's in IT too, he gets a bit fed up of too much screen time too.

He runs most nights after work, just about 50 mins (10k-ish) so it's done before dinner. He's a great cook too and cooks for us most nights. He plays 7-a-side football every Tuesday with his mates (just paying £4 for the ground, not an organised league). We have a dog too and take her to training every Wednesday night.

He's really into hillwalking/climbing so plans hills/routes for us during the week and we go at weekends. He's really into photography too (of the landscapes we see mainly!) so fiddles with that quite a lot too. Apart from the initial outlay on the camera (DSLR), both of those are pretty much free. Walking boots and a decent jacket are all that you really need to start you off on hillwalking (and maps and a compass if you don't know the terrain!)

We also snowboard (practise in Xscape when out of season) but that is a bit more expensive.

He plays poker with his mates and goes out to the pub with them but i don't count that as a hobby, even if he does!

Does anyone know how to find out about local clubs and such?

Music's actually my first love, but I generally keep it out of JK's way (long commute + iPod) - and I do much less with it because I have less scope: my performing talents are hopelessly limited, and I'm equally terrible at writing about it. (I'm just as poor at writing about abstract art: some art forms I appreciate enormously but am terrible at articulating just why I appreciate them).

Baring the golf bit, me too! He does read a little though, cook, gardens (mainly the veg plot), used to do a lot of walking and cycling, would do more photography but leaves it to me and likes tinkering with gadgets.

Mr P has turned the techy geekery into a bit of a part time job, and spends at least an evening a week fixing/installing stuff for other people.

Hes big into cars and that take up loads of time too, as well as photography, and does yoga with me sometimes.

He's doing a postgrad in renewable energy, so, like foxy, spends a lot of time recycling, not turning on the heating and switching things off. How this works along with the car thing I don't know.
