What do you call your in laws?

Nutella, 21 March, 2012 at 11:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 57

Strange question I know but I just call mine by their first names but OH keeps saying 'she's your Mum now as well'

As far back as I can remember, my parents always called each others parents Mum and Dad and I never questioned it till now as it seems totally wrong to call anyone but my own parents Mum and Dad....

What do you call yours?

    By their names.

I would never call them mum or dad because they're just not!

I call my MIL "the trout" (only in private of course ?)

Both by their names. No one is my mom and dad apart from my own.

I call my MIL by her name but my parents have always called their in laws mum and dad. My dad is no longer with us and my mum has remarried but she still calls my paternal grandma mum.

We were having this exact conversation the other day and I think it is definitely a generational thing, my uncles and aunties wives/husbands all call my grandparents mum and dad as well !

I call them by their names, I could never call them Mum and Dad!

My Mum calls my Grandma M (her mother in law) by her name.

My Dad calls my Grandma E (his mother in law) Mum, but he doesn't call my Grandad, Dad! :/

When i talk to her, I dont really recall saying her name in conversation...... although if I call her to get her attention I use Theresa.

WHen texting I call her Mommy T "hi Mommy T, how are ya"

In cards I put MOM as its from her SON and me

I could never imaging ringing her and saying "Hi Mom" because although I love her to bits, she's not.

My mum calls my dad's parents 'mum' and 'dad', and my in-laws both call their in-laws 'mum' and 'dad'. My dad calls my mum's parents 'Auntie' and 'Uncle' which he did before they were married (they're NOT related, it's just an Asian thing to call older people 'auntie' and 'uncle').

I call my in-laws by their names, to their faces, but if e.g. I'm calling up the stairs to H, I'll say "Mum wants you!" and I write their cards to 'Mum' and 'Dad' as the cards are technically from H but if I didn't do them nobody would!

I wouldn't mind calling my in-laws Mum and Dad but haven't been asked to (or asked if I would like to), so I don't.

I would NEVER EVER call them Mum & Dad. I call them by their names. My auntie calls her PIL Mum and Dad and it has always made me cringe.

I'd never call them Mum and Dad. Even when I write their cards from both of us I write "Ma & Pa".

His dad is called Anthony. In his business circle and his football circle, he's known as Tony. To his family, he's known as Anthony or Anth. Because I work with him, I find it very hard to decide what to call him, so I probably don't ever address him by name! His kids have a nickname for him which is Derek (no idea why), so I tend to call him that if anything.

I call them by their names too. Even if it was the usual thing to call them Mum & Dad, we have a bit of a strained relationship so it would feel very weird.

I call my in-laws by their names. Bill and Jean. Or, to much family amusement, Jill and Bean one time by accident. It's stuck now.

My parents call their in-laws by their names.

To people at work I call them "Outlaws"

    Yikes.

I sometimes call OH's Mum 'Mummy' but then she does live thousands of miles away so it's generally on the phone or email. Also, OH has an 11year old brother who calls me his sister.

My Nan always used to call my Gramps' parents Mum and Pops - she was an orphan though.

By their first names. When Mum Fluff died MIL said that she would be my surrogate Mum and I could call her mum if I wanted to. I politely refused. Only one Mum for me.

I call FIL Dave. Both my sister's in law (his daughters) call him Dave not Dad, started as a joke when they were younger and stuck. OH and his brother call him Dad though

I call MIL by her name unless we are all at their house i.e. all 4 of her kids inc OH and partners in which case I get her attention by calling out muuuuuuum (whingy voice) as that gets her attention more in a busy house!

I refer to her as Mummy (insert surname) in conversation though

I call my ex's parents by their first name, or his Mum "Mrs P". She calls her own MIL "Mum" (His Grandmother) and I call her "Grandma".. Wouldn't feel right calling her anything else.

My Mum and Dad always called their PIL by their first name.

On a similar note, I really don't like it when children call their parent's by their name rather than "Mum" etc. It just feels disrespectful to me, I'm not sure why.

I call MIL by her first name, not that I really have to say her name very often in conversation. In fact, I actively avoid it.

My ex's mum called her MIL 'mum' and I asked why once, she said it was only after she lost her own mum that she felt comfortable saying it, not quite a replacement but eased the pain of her loss?!

H calls my parents by their full - not shortened first names, and any other relatives are given the same respect. My BIL calls my grandad Dick (his name is Richard) I find it really disrespectful but that might be partly because I really dislike him!
