What do you do?

Twiga, 25 November, 2013 at 17:56 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 93

I'm pretty sure this thread has been done to death but I'm still a relative newbie and I'm, erm, nosy! I know what your OH's do now, but what do you do?

I'm a geologist, specialising in the causes and prevention of landslides. Most of the time I'm to be found lecturing at a uni in London, but occasionally I get to go out and about to do some fieldwork (usually somewhere rainy). In Jan I got to go to Oz to build some landslide barriers... That was probably the highlight of my career, I'm unlikely to get an opportunity like that again. This was my daily commute to work:

Sooooo tell me about your jobs, and share a flash of yourself in action, if you want ?

Im an analytical chemist; I now work in air quality/pollution detection & asessment; I was in oil research developing new analytical techniques for detecting stuff in oil that you didn't want to be there.

Here's me in front of my trusty instrument.

That sounds really interesting! At the moment I'm still studying for my psychology degree but not sure where I want to go next. I've been thinking about all sorts. I think I would make a good teacher but not sure if I want to go into further study like that at the moment. I've also seen on here a lot of people who are teachers don't seem to like it.

I sit on the sofa and walk the dog! And every now and then I head over to the British Museum to help families have an awesome time as a Learning Facilitator. A couple months ago I resigned my post as an education officer for a National Trust site to accompany my H to Paris ?

Research fellow, running a little lab studying genetics/development/disease. Speciality: ocular and craniofacial development, and more recently (thank you MRC), bladder development. I can be mostly found fiddling with genes, I can sometimes be found lecturing, and as infrequently as possible found wading through paperwork, somewhere at a university in the North West.

No pictures really. Nature of the work means we keep a low visual profile.

Ooo interesting! My postgrad work was concerned with the oil industry (how to stop oil rigs in the north sea sinking the more that they drill), fascinating stuff!

I loved my job in oil. It's much more interesting than air.

I'm a secondary school teacher and I'm not enjoying it at the moment. Up until about a year ago I loved it but there have been so many detrimental changes, both at my school and nationwide, that I've been contemplating trying to 'get out' myself of late. A lot of teachers I know feel the same. As things are I wouldn't recommend it but I'm hopeful things will change. If not I can't see myself doing it forever.

Funding for research in the oil industry is so hard though. I'm involved with a project atm looking at whether drilling for oil in South America is causing earth tremors. Regardless of results it's mainly funded by a major oil company... gah.

Same. I want it to be my 'forever' job as I love what I do, I just can't cope with any more demands or changes. Just one year I'd like the powers that be to let us just do our job without stuffing it all up halfway through or setting statistically impossible targets.

I'm a recruitment manager. I head up the recruitment for a division of one of the energy companies.

I basically define processes, look for ways to improve, role profile, ensure people are acting lawfully when recruiting and all the little bits including interviews, assessment centres etc.

i work for hr though which means I also get involved with the disiplinary side of things.

I don't have any photos of me at work to scare you with I'm afraid.

I'm a Chartered Tax Advisor. I work for a big accountancy firm dealing with tax compliance and consulting for individuals. It sounds dull as but I actually really enjoy it, well not right now as I'm still in the office....

I'm an accountant. Boring to most people but I enjoy it. Have been self employed for the last 8months but am trying to get back into employment as feel very alone and isolated :-( however, so proud that I had the guts and opportunity to give it a go!

I work with autistic children. I spend my days going to different schools over the county to give support to children, teachers and TAs. I also do home visits with families who are struggling.

i love my job, and although it's massively stressful and hectic, the work satisfaction genrally outweighs this. So many families and schools can see a turn around with just a little support. Taking a child off caseload is often heartbreaking....many of them I'd love to stay with forever!

I manage a small independent coffee shop. A really really good use of my psychology degree and £££s worth of student debt.

I actually love it though, and since being diagnosed with narcolepsy I need an active job, putting me behind a desk quickly leads to sleeping Smiley winking

I'm a doctor, in year 2 out of 7 training to be an anaesthetist. I love it - it's fascinating and exciting but not too stressful for the most part (though when it gets scary it gets VERY scary VERY quickly!) I posted a truly terrifying picture of me at work in the selfies thread last week, I'm not bringing it out again!
