What do you think is the most timeless wedding colour scheme?

Mrs B 2 be, 8 November, 2010 at 22:04 Posted on Planning 0 12

I am struggling to decide on a colour scheme and was wondering what colour people think will last the test of time? I am dreading my photos looking horrendous in 10 years time and my bridesmaids (my sister and cousins), asking what the hell was I thinking? ?

I suppose you could just "cover all bases"...

I don't think it really matters. We look at my mums wedding pictures and she cringes and we laugh about it but then the massive grin on her face makes up for the 80s lacy meringue! I think I'll look back on my pics and know it was the happiest day of my life even if we were all wearing shocking pink!!

I had a lot of comments on my wedding day about how classic everything looked as we didn't use colour in anything really apart from the dresses and kilts. The chair sashes were champagne to match my dress, the flowers were all white/ivory with some greenery apart from the ribbon matching the dresses, linen was ivory and the cake was covered in calla lillies with a thin blue ribbon on it.

It wasn't really intentional to do it this way but it just sort of happened.

    Thanks everyone!

kj82 I think you are right, I get carried away with having to have everything perfect. As long as it is a great day with family and friends, and everyone is happy, the pics will be great memories!

I think I am going to go with the bottom 2 colours of the petals on the Marc Jacobs Lola perfume bottle, random I know!

ajdown, I don't think the rainbow colour scheme would quite go with the venue ? but thanks for the suggestion! xxx

I don't think it's the colour scheme that will date, I think it will be more the style etc. Although saying that I guess golds are very classic and peach is very 80s!?

My first wedding (back in 1981, eek!) was ivory and pale green, with a touch of pink in the bridesmaids bouquets. That was classic I think,, except for the green ruffled tuxedo shirts and tuxes the groom insisted on the men wear. He wore a nice Dior black tux tho, lol. Those poor men in green tho,, eek.

I have since shot alot of weddings of pale green and ivory, minus the ruffled tuxedo shirts and green tuxes. Thank goodness, lol

I think the most classic and timeless colour scheme is ivory/white/green but each decade has it's favourites - red was huge in the 40's with massive bouquets of red carnations and asparagus fern trailing down the floor, the 60's and 70's started mixing the colours, the 80's was massive on pink, 90's very big on burgundy and 2000's onwards colour schemes really came into their own. Half the fun of looking back at wedding photos is having a giggle at the fashions so I wouldn't worry too much!

I think by not having a colour is the only way you can avoid it looking dated. I couldnt decide on a colour which was fate in the end because Im having creams and whites and it really does look beautiful I was a bit worried at first, but seeing it come together now has reassured me that it was a great choice.

I agree with everyone else. I think a white/creams/ivory theme is the most classic/timeless. I can't see how that would date.

I think there are lots of classic combinations.

and things drop in and out of fashion all the time.

But if I look at my parents wedding photos (1971) and all black and white. A number of the guys have flares, with long hair. Some of the ladies have very heavily patterned short dresses.

The fashions are very strong there and highly 70s, but I think they are really endearing photos, I love them. The photos have captured a moment in time and thats how things were. Even if I do have a snigger at my dads huge! mutton chops.

Just avoid any short lived fads.

I didn't realise that! Black and white is very in now isn't it?

Re the peach thing - my sister got married in the 80s - peach chiffon bridesmaid dresses and for the men white socks with patent slip on shoes!

Personally I went for ivory through to gold. Some people are snidey about gold on here, but I thought it looked classy and classic Smiley smile

I am finding more & more Brides are choosing to have a blank canvas and just adding an accent colour very minimal. Puple is the most asked for colour and Black is also very popular.

Using just White or Ivory is the most timeless just adding colour with the flowers.
