What do you think - table names

amanda66, 29 July, 2012 at 15:04 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hiya,

Sorry it's table names again!

Originally we had TV couples, then we were going to have the surnames in our family trees up to great grand parents.

Now we are thinking of going with good luck omens for weddings - have only thought of four so far and we need seven!:

Chimneysweep

Horseshoe

Lucky Sixpence

Wooden Spoon

I am printing them myself and thinking about printing them double sided with name and a picture on the front and a little bit of text on the back explaining where the belief comes from.

Honest opinions please???

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue?!

I like it when table names really reflect the couple. So if this is you then go for it. Or if you are a family girl go for that.

The most unoriginal names have got to be 'cities of the places we are going to see on honeymoon' but plenty of people use this. More interesting and heartfelt is places they have been whilst a couple and pictures of them at each location.

Failing that there are always table numbers!

My Mum hired a chimney sweep (a surprise for us) gave me a horseshoe and a little black cat, and I had a sixpence in my shoe, something old, new, borrowed and blue.

I just need the wooden spoon for a full house!

Hitched have a little bit about myths etc /wedding-planning/organising-and-planning/wedding-traditions-and-superstitions/

I found this in my Google search, made me laugh. I will most definitely be wearing underwear on my wedding day!

    Underwear superstition:

An old European superstition is that if a girl obtains underwear from a recently married woman she will be married within a year. A Welsh superstition is that if she fills her bra or pants with valerian she will become attractive to men. In some parts of England it was believed that a woman not wearing underwear during her wedding day would be lucky in life. Another common superstition is that wearing underwear inside out will lead to a lucky day.

This site also has a lot of superstitions http://www.headpieceheaven.com/weddingcustomsomens.html. Don't know if there's anything you can pick from that. My favourite on that one is 'if you feed a cat an old shoe, your wedding will be a happy one'. Poor cat.

    Omens of good luck

Walking was traditionally seen as the best way of getting to the Church on time, and there was also the possiblity that the bride would have more chance of spotting a lucky omen, or having the sun shine on her. Some cultures believe that rainbows, spiders, black cats, lambs and toads are thought to bring good luck if they are seen on the way to the wedding. Another popular good luck omen is seeing a chimney sweep after the ceremony. This has become such a popular tradition, that it is possible to hire a chimney sweep to attend your wedding.

When you return home for the first time as husband and wife, tradition dictates that a new wife must enter her home through the front door, without tripping or falling, to ward off bad luck. This is why it has become customary for the groom to carry his bride over the threshold.

Here's another one http://www.griceevents.co.uk/superstitions.html the actual charms, lucky 6pence etc, are at the bottom. HTH x

Just because a lot of people do it doesn't make it any less special. A lot of people use numbers and that's got to be the absolute most unorigianl thing, but if that's what you choose then who cares. I think it's lovely but we're not having a honeymoon, maybe just a week away in a caravan Smiley sad lol x

I'm sorry MrsC! I didn't mean that it isn't a nice idea, just that it's what a lot of people choose if they can't think of anything else (or don't have enough pics!). Naughty Ducky. I will bite my tongue! You did a grand job of your table plan, it looked fabulous.

We are monkey mad, so we had types of monkey. I really struggled to think of 13 different types beyond chimps, baboons, orangutans and gorillas!
