What does a Project Manager do, exactly?

Donna N, 3 September, 2008 at 13:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I have just had a call from a very good friend of mine who just so happens to be a millionaire businessman. We worked together 10 years ago and go for drinks occasionally etc.

He just called to give me an opportunity to get into a new venture he is launching, which is venue management (something I have limited knowledge of but I have been an events manager for 10 years). He needs a project manager and thinks that I am "perfect" for the position, and he says he can trust me to get on with things etc. He also says it would fit in perfectly with my maternity leave which I will be taking soon (not coming back to this job) and that I could realistically start in a years time (perfect for me).

I told him I couldnt really talk at the moment as I'm at work but have promised to call him tonight and discuss a few bits and then we'll go for a drink on Friday. Problem is I have no idea what a Project Manager does? Can anyone give me some insight into this profession?

We are very good friends so if I dont feel at all comfortable, I am completely able to say no at the moment so I just wanted to ask you guys if you could help me not look like an idiot?

<bites back the obvious smartarse response>

If you've been working as an Event Manager, project management is basically what you've been doing all along.

It's pretty much what you are doing.

I freelance in events management and sometimes my title is project manger sometimes event manager depending on the client and what I'm doing. In practical terms it's the exact same job but project management tends to pay more so I pitch myself as that for some projects. I tend to get taken on as a project manager at the beginning of the project so from pitch to post event, whereas event managment is more ad hoc and site based.

PS - the smartarse response I meant was "who knows?", I wasn't trying to suggest it was a silly question.

    Sorry.

Thanks everyone - sorry for the delay in coming back to you. Thanks for clarifying - phew! I'll be OK then!

As for the smart arse answer I was expecting someone to say "someone who manages projects?" ?
