What does "no presents in boxes" mean?

Is this a subtle request for envelope shaped contributions only ?, or do you think it is as says on the tin. Is there some superstition regarding getting boxes?

but if i was going to their wedding its relevant, isn't it?

i went to a sikh wedding with an old boyfriend, and one thing we wanted to know was the dress code, so it followed that we found out their religion from these enquiries...

its not like its an unreasonable question

I don't think it's an unreasonable question at all, I just meant that it's not unreasonable not to know the in's and outs of your friends' religions. I'd have no problem asking a friend of mine about their religion, it's just not something that ever seems to crop up in general conversation.

I have to say religion isn't the first thing i speak about with new friends, or those about to be married. last wedding i went to i didn't know the groom and it didn't state about the service, but i didn't email my friend and ask if it was going to be an orthodox wedding because she was marrying a greek - would sound a bit odd, to my ears.
