What fine and points can I expect

Hepburn, 24 June, 2009 at 17:12 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

I *think* I got clocked by a mobile police wagon today - and *think* I was doing about 70/71 (def not over 74) in a 50.

Not certain they would ahve been able to clock me as was behind another car and wasn't in direct line but it's a definite possibility.

I know I was driving too fast, I never speed along that road usually but some idiot in a corsa was up my behind, and I was trying to get in front of a car to get out of his way.

How many point should I expect? Could I be banned?

I have a clean licence up till now, no points or fines.

Any advice much appreciated - TIA x

I think you can get 6 points if you are 20 mph above the speed limit, so it depends what speed they caught you at.

AFAIK from H's speeding fine it was a £60 fine, but that was only at 7mph over the speed limit, so I'm not sure if it would be different if they did get you at 20 over.

Maybe someone else will be able to tell you more.

Thanks DDL, 6 points and a fine would be shit but better than a ban so I would hope for that. I'm just so annoyed with myself.

    Hiya,

I work in the camera unit for Strathclyde Police, They'll prob still have been able to clock you. For 70 odd in a 50, you may get reported straight to the procurator fiscal. This usually results in 3 points and £60, although the pf can increase it to 6 points I think. Otherwise you should recieve a "NIP" which you have to fill in within 28 days - this gives you a conditional offer which is 3 points and £60.

It's VERY unlikely that you'll be banned.

Hi, am a police officer, agree with what Kirstin said. You are very unlikely to be banned, I've seen far worse driving than that and they'v not got a ban. You suld receive an NIP (Notice of Inteended Prosecution) through the post, I think this needs to be sent within 14 days. You have the option of accepting the points and fine or disputing it. If you dispute it, it's possible you could end up with a heftier punishment, so if I were you I'd just take it on the chin. More than likely it will be 3 ponts and a £60 fine, they could go for more at that speed, but I doubt they will.

Sorry if I've got anything wrong, I tend not to do traffic as I find it dull, so trying to remember everything from my training!

Just to add speedometers aren't that accurate. when i was flashed i thought i was doing well over 50 in a 30, but when it came through they said it was about 47.

i actually thought it was 6 points if you were more than 20 over the limit but i stand corrected by the last two posters

It can be 6 points if you are 20mh+, but it depends. You think you may have been going at 70, if that's the case they may stick to 3 points rather than try and prove the 20 mph, which would be more likely to be contested.

I got caught doing 77 in a 50 zone 2 years ago and got 5 points and a £120 fine. I consider myself very lucky though ?

If I'd been doing 76 or under then it would have been a fixedpenalty notice, as I was that extra mph too fast it had to go to court but I was able to do it by post.

I don't speed at all now, have really learnt my lesson.

Oh and I'd not speed up just cos some tit was up my behind, I'd only pull over to let them past when it was safe to do so, they can swear at me all they like, there's not much they can do a 50mph ?

Are offers to attend a Speed Awareness course and not get the points a regional thing then? That's what I had on my recent transgression, but no-one else seems to be mentioning them. The course cost slightly more than the fine, but no points on my (unbelievably) clean licence.

When i got caught about 4 years ago i was going 37-40 in a 30 zone and got 3 points and a £60 fine.

ETA - I'm also now a much more careful driver than what i was, a never speed, and tbh it's slowed me down altogether. I stick to the speed limit at all times and people that do speed really annoy me and i wish that there was a speed camera to catch them.

My H got caught speeding by one of these 3 years ago now. Was doing 51 in a 40mph zone, and got 4 points with £200 fine. Don't know why this is more than what other people seem to have got though!
