what happens to your medical records if you dont go to the docs?

pans, 4 February, 2009 at 09:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

My medical records are still at the surgery near where i lived in london. We have lived here in australia for 4 years and have no intention of moving back to london (but we do intnend to move back to the uk)

What will happen to my records? Do i need to ask for them? I dont want them to be binned but they wouldnt jsut send them to me, would they? We dont hve a family doctor over here as it doesnt really work like that here, you can go anywhere you want and all your records are computer recorded.

Thanks

When we moved over here we asked our doctor about that and she said they get moved to a central store, and when we move back they will get taken out again, and sent to wherever we register.

In that case I have no idea - we only told ours because I broke my ankle a couple of weeks before we left, and I wanted shed loads of painkillers.

My dad, when he was younger did not go to see his GP for 17 years!!!!!! when he eventually did have to go he was told they had assumed he was dead and sent him records back to the local health authority (as it was then)!

I wouldn't have thought they'd bin them, i expect they'll be in an archive or something. Might be worth emailling the surgery to let them know you've moved away so they know not to destroy the records.
