What hymns are you having?

Purple Pixie, 26 September, 2011 at 15:40 Posted on Planning 0 24

I'm trying to think what hymns I know but my mind has gone pretty blank. I like 'O Jesus I have promised' but now I'm stuck.

What are you having?

I met with my vicar yesterday and she actually suggest the Church of England website (that Alocin88 has posted the link for) for ideas.

We will definately be having Love Devine, but havent decided on the 2nd one yet - probably All things bright and beautiful as most will know this one well! ? x

Do you have two or three?

We've been talking about this at the weekend... We've got 2 chosen already (All Things Bright and Beautiful, Love Divine All Loves Excelling) but I'm certain my friend had three!

Love Divine (Stainer), Be Still for the Presence of the Lord, Tell Out My Soul are currently in the lead. Love Divine is the only definite one so far though, I have a list of about 12 possibles!

You can have up to 4 in a standard CofE service, and generally they recommend at least two.

In our blessing service we had three - Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer, Make Me a Channel of Your Peace and You Shall Go Out With Joy.

Love both of these, really upbeat as you say and I'm sure people will love singing them!

For those of you who have suggested All Things Bright and Beautiful, I associate this song with funerals. I know it isn't a funeral song and it's lovely, but I've been to a few that have had it.

We are singing Jerusalum, Amazing Grace and Lord of All Hopefulness in that order

I really wanted Silent night but its not quite christmas time when we marry so i kinda got vetoed on that

We are also having the choir at the church as we arent having a huge number of guests so think the choir singing will stop that half-hearted singing you get lol

I agree with making sure the congregation knows the hymns. At BIL2B's wedding, they had a hymn which nobody really knew, apart from the people who went to our secondary school, because we used to sing it in assembly!

We're having Love Divine, because both sets of parents and my sister had it at their weddings. We're also having "Give me joy in my heart" but in Welsh, as the guy who translated it lives in my parents' village and goes to chapel with my mum. I like to think that we've chosen hymns that are a bit meaningful.

I love 'Be Still' - glad for this thread as I hadn't thought of it!

I also like the 'Eagle's Wings' hymn and 'Shine Jesus Shine'. I think for the processional I want Pachelbel's Canon.

We're having All Things Bright and Beautiful, Give Me Joy in My Heart and One More Step.

One More Step was my fave song we used to sing at primary school so I insisted on that one!
