What, if anything, are you getting your dogs/cats/pets for Christmas?

merry doaky, 17 December, 2008 at 15:05 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

Hi al,

I'm looking for some inspiration as to what to get my 2 dogs, both female boxers and my rabbit for Christmas.

Apart from picking up what we've ordered for our 2yr old son and collecting what I've reserved for H they are the only gifts left to buy for.

I had a look at the stocking types available for the dogs in the supermarket/pet store, but the toys are quite flimsy for my dogs and they would demolish them in a few hours and I have no clue what to buy for the rabbit!

What are you getting your pets??

Thanks in advance for your advice/replies.

Victoria

For your dogs, look for something from Planet Dog - their toys are great and Riley much prefers them to Kongs etc. You can get their stuff in Pets at Home.

Riley was getting a new waterproof coat - but I gave it to her early when she was recovering from her operation. Then she was getting a new ball on a rope - but she came downstairs with it a couple of weeks ago, having found it in a (closed) box in the spare room. So, now she's getting another throwing-type toy.

Holly-cat is getting a new collar and Billy-cat was getting a catnip filled dog but Riley also found that in the spare room and so now it's hers. Billy will probably get a new food bowl or two as Mr Boop won't let me get him a new collar (Mr Boop bought his existing one in Australia years ago and it's the one and only thing he's ever bought for the animals without being prompted by me).

No idea what to get for rabbits - presumably they also play with toys?

MH - ? at cats getting duck fat if lucky.

Boop - Thanks for the recommendation on Planet Dog. I shall check them out in Pets at Home tomorrow when I'm out and about. I think Pets at Home also sell rabbit toys so I'll have a look at them too.

I'm not sure though what rabbit toys are any good so if anyone has any recommendations for that it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again ladies.

My cats are getting a holiday. They leave tomorrow in their own private transport (a huge, specially for flight travel, wooden-box[nice!]), get to have a window seat (will put the back seat down in the truck so they can see out) and then have their own private villa called Miami (yes, really!) with country views and daily maid service.

Gourmet meals will be fed twice a day, and they will even get groomed by the staff who absolutely love them! Every time the staff know Tippy & Tex are coming, they get excited apparently, as T&T are just so friendly and well behaved.

That's my Christmas present to my boys ?

    Talk about spoiled ?

I'd love some TLC like that for Christmas, perhaps you should have a word with my H!

Honestly though sound lovely, my dogs go to something similar for holidays complete with sea views and access to the beach! The things we do for our pets?

Oooooooh legless, thank you for the link.

H wants to get the dogs a rawhide bone type thing that is 2ft long. Mmmmm I'm not sure though if thats a good idea so a shopping trip for the rabbit/dogs is in order.

    Gizmo (my rabbit) loved this:

    http://www.petsathome.com/find/category-is-6+small+pets/breed-is-rabbit/product-is-18844/pgs-is-132#product-detail

although he destroyed the base pretty quickly, he loves throwing the carrots around

    he also loved these:

    http://www.petsathome.com/find/breed-is-rabbit/product-is-11917/pgs-is-133

but he's a little freak and didn't actually eat the corn kernels, just loved nibbling them off then would spit them out and enjoyed throwing them around

But why do people buy Christmas presents for their pets? It's always puzzled me! Not as if they know it's Christmas is it or that you get all the fun of watching them unwrap and tell you if they like it? ? Sorry, maybe it's just me. Surely all those doggy and cat stocking are just a huge marketing ploy?

Kaz - I buy gifts for Phoebe, my dog, because I like any excuse to spoil her/watch her having fun. She's also a member of our family so it wouldn't feel right to leave her out.

Phoebe's main present is a Snuggle Sack - I found a company that hand-makes these sack type beds that certain dogs really enjoy. Phoebe is a burrower so I think she'll enjoy crawling inside to have a nap. She's currently on my lap, sleeping, underneath a blanket. For her stocking, so far, I have bought her a squeaky gingerbread man and a stuffed mitten toy. I plan on getting her some treats to take with her to her doggy-sitter's house when we leave her for a week.

Well as we're at my mums house for Christmas day I bought her dog a present. He's a staffie so needs goods toy, so I bought him one those hard ruuber things in the shape of a large dummy and as an ostrach squecky toy, it's the cutest thing in thr world and will last all of 5 minutes when he gets his teeth into it - he will love it!

Our cat had got a big spider at the end of a long string - covered in catnip (he gots insane over catnip) and two little balls. Being a cat he'll probably just be really aloof about the whole thing.

Sorry, I think I was being a bit bah-humbug! We had a dog when I was very young and we bought him one of those stockings with treats in and a toy etc but I was surprised to see a thread about more extravagent gifts but of course, it's up to people what they spend their money on and I guess Christmas is a good excuse to splash out on some nice things. I guess I'm gutted your dog is more loved than me as I don't get a stocking! ?

I was kidding lol ... my poor boys aren't going on holiday, they're going to the cattery! ?

Their "private" transport is ME lol .. I'm taking them in a wooden crate - not salubrious at all! And their 'Miami' suite is nothing more than a cupboard sized room, although it does have a window. Most of the 'cells' don't have windows, but T&T go so often (sadly), they get special treatment.

I'd rather have them home. I'd rather BE home. As much as they don't want to go on 'holiday', I don't want to go to the UK either. Bah humbug.

Aaawwww peaches sorry my head is all over the place right now I didn't get the joke - I'm sure I'm getting thicker by the day ?

Then again you never know what some people will do for their pets when they go on holiday. I'm sure T&T will enjoy the "holiday" and (I've seen your other posts, but I'm not too clued up on th back ground) hope everything goes ok for you and your family when you get back to the UK ?.

They sound like fuss free kitties!

I've never given my dogs xmas dinner, but we do normally buy them something. This year I would like to give them something other than the usual dog stocking cos the toys don't last 5 mins with them.

I shall visit Pets at Home in the morning when H takes me shopping. I'm not allowed out without adult supervision? (cos of pregnancy complications but thats boring) plus I have a tendancy to go to Pets at Home and come back with whatever it was I went in for and a dog looking a new home.? Last time I went in for hamster food, I came home with the food and a German Shep pup whose owner had died and needed a new home!
