What is the most you have ever spent on one item of clothing

Panjita, 25 February, 2014 at 13:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 36

Apart from your wedding dress, what is the most you have ever spent on an item of clothing?

I love clothes, I love fashion and I love Vogue, but when I read it I can't help but wonder how many people can actually afford to spend £2.5k on a pair of shorts. And of those that CAN afford it, how many actually do?

I think the most I've ever spent on an item of clothing is £85 on a Karen Millen top. I'm so thrifty. If we are counting footwear, I once bought a pair of boots which were £180. These kind of treats are very few and far between though. The majority of my clothes come from Primark, Matalan(d) or F&F. I can't help thinking, if I see an expensive dress or whatever, that I could get an entire outfit elsewhere for the same price.

I once bought a pair of L K Bennett boots for £120. On the good side, I still wear them 10 years on (and they still look good) and I had just been given £100.

Conversely, my wedding dress was £60, so I know how to do thrifty.

I tend to buy what I can in the sale as I am too old to wear unforgiving poor quality stuff these days!

I doubt I've ever spent more than about £30 on any piece of clothing!! I walk away from boots if they cost more than £50 and I do most of my shopping in charity shops. I've probably spent more on my kids clothes than I've ever spent on mine!! having said that, I've worn clothes from all over - including designer thanks to my thrifty ways lol

Does £200 on a handbag count?

Or maybe £120 on a dress I think.

Now I'm a bit older (and have more disposable income) I try to buy good quality classic pieces that last a bit longer. But in the main I am quite thrifty and also buy a lot of my clothes in the sale

I've got quite a few dresses in my wardrobe that I've paid £100-120 for. When I was younger I'd never think twice about paying £100-£150 for an outfit for a night out. Now that I'm all responsible I am a very good sale shopper, so I still own high end stuff but at a fraction on the rrp!

£200 on a gorgeous pair of Carvela wedge boots. So gorgeous and expensive that I have only worn them once in 3 years due to a fear of ruining them!

Hmmm, the boots I am wearing were £170 (although now £150 grrrr) but I think this is relatively cheap for a proper pair of boots that will last a few years. Last year, I bought a Diane Von Furstenburg dress which was £300. Before Christmas, I spent £180 on a silk top (wore to Brum meet, purple floaty thing). I don't spend hugely (I don't think) but am happy to spend well and wisely on decent stuff (not just "label" stuff). Or sometimes just not care about spending....

My Mulberry fund is building nicely (unless Boy is still robbing from it). Apart from my wedding dress, that is likely to be the most expensive item bought for a long time.

I try not to spend too much on clothes, sticking to Tesco, Asda etc.

However, I do like caterpillar boots. I have tried various other shoes/boots but always come back to caterpillar. Expensive but I can't abide wet or cold feet and they last for years so I figure they're worth it at £40-£60.

I'm not sure. I really don't like spending large amounts of money on one item of clothing, I'd rather have more items even if the quality is worse.

I bought a proper pair of boots (short ones) year before last from Clarks. They were £65 and actually are a bit uncomfortable especially if worn all day. I bought them so as to stop buying a cheapo £15-£20 pair from New Look every year, but actually, those NL ones were always comfy and would at least last the winter before falling apart.

I don't think I've ever spent more than maybe £60 on a dress... but I have spent maybe a couple of hundred quid within a couple of weeks just on clothes. In the past.

I bought a £39 maternity dress at the weekend and ummed and ahhed over it for ages and still feel a bit bad about spending what is, to me, quite a lot on just one dress and it's not for any special occasion. But it is lovely!

Not including boots or shoes I would say £180 on a dress.

If we are including handbags and shoes my most expensive shoes were my Louboutins which were £495 and my handbag is one of my Mulberry bags which was £995 and then reduced to £595 in the sale and I treated myself after doing an obscene amount of overtime at work last year. Every day shoes I think my Uggs are the most expensive and they were £200.

If we are doing just clothes then it would be a leather jacket I bought years ago, which was £225, I dont have it any more though.

I splash out on things that will last, classic pieces, and I do think sometimes you get what you pay for, the cut, quality etc. If I’m going to a wedding I do tend to shop in the likes of Ted Baker, Karen Millen, LK Bennett but its normally something that won’t date too much so would easily spend £100 - £200 on a dress. I do own a Mulberry but that was before me and H were married and our money was separated so I was happy for him to buy it for me! Ha

I often wonder who buys these clothes that cost thousands, and I don’t think if I suddenly had all the cash to spend on them if I really would change my ways that much.

I'd like to think if I had the money I wouldn't go crazy and start spending ridiculous amounts on clothes, but I wonder if your attitude to money changes when you have that much of it, so you start thinking of it as pocket change?

Saying that though I always have a tiny ounce of guilt if I do splash on something so I guess that would always be there!

Lets see, I have some Uggs - OH fetched them from Sydney so I think we did well on the exchange rate on them. I have a couple of ball gowns which were £100+ but I haven't paid anything over £150 for a dress, I tend to wait for a bargain (£99 dress for £9 - ok dokey!).

I will pay a fair amount for boots though, I like them to last and be comfy, which normally adds £.

Shoe/boot wise, most of mine are Iron Fist, Irregular Choice and Dr Martens, so often around or over the £100 mark. I wear my boots A LOT though, so definitely get my moneys worth. I bought some cheapo £20 boots for the Brum meet, as I wasn't sure where we would end up, and if Docs would be suitable. Reminded me why I dont buy cheap shoes!!!

I have some New Rock boots that were £120, that I got as a teen, and I still wear them.

Clothing wise, I have a £300 leather trench coat from my teen goth days, and a £150 floor length velvet coat.

To compensate for my taste in footwear, I buy cheap clothes. I like to customise, so buy alot off ebay, and from charity shops.

I spend hardly anything on clothes and am happily still wearing things that pre-date my H!

I did spend about £450 on an alpaca coat once though, but it is very warm so well worth the money IMO.

I have uggs but H bought me them. They are 4 years old now and still good and comfy. All of my good things have been gifts - a pink Ness coat, a fancy handbag etc.

I spent £99 on my dress too Panj, and I once spent £80 on a dress for my formal.

Day to day I wear relatively cheap clothes, a colleagues daughter is a shopaholic and my size so I often get a huge bag of clothes, most of them quite good labels - the cheapest being Debenhams/next etc. I got a pair of French connection trousers with the £75 price tag still on! It's all usually new, she's my shoe size too! I mostly shop in asda, Primark, new look etc. especially for work, I wear the £3 flats from Primark as they get filthy within a few days! I like fat face, ness etc but only in the sales! I get serious guilt buying things though!

If I have a special occasion I'd rather save a bit and get a good quality dress that I'm likely to wear again though.

I've spent £560 on a leather jacket , £250 on a dress, £180 on my work waterproof wind proof coat. If I see stuff I like and I can afford it I do tend to buy it.

I mainly shop at Primark, New Look or F&F as I usually rather get more clothes for my budget rather than one item, but occasionally I do splurge on one item. Most expensive is a DollyDagger dress at £80, that I still have and wear on special occasions or a pair of £70 boots that survived two autumn/winters constant use.

It's obviously people's own preferences but personally I don't get it when people spend all their spare cash on clothes. I'd rather spend it on things like meals out, trips away, days out etc. Each to their own though.

I have a couple of cocktail dresses around the £120-130 range, think they're probably the most expensive.

When I get a registrar job and pass my Final FRCA I will get a Mulberry and then that will be the most!

I think it is probably my coat which was around £110 two winters ago. It is still in excellent condition so will hopefully last me a while.

The last item of clothing I bought was a £30 dress that I wore to 6 Christmas/New Years 'parties'! I don't enjoy spending money on clothes, I think it's because I can never find anything that fits properly and I don't ever seem to like anything that the shops in my town sell. I am clueless when it comes to fashion...

I would love to splurge my overdraft on designer gear but nothing fits me! I stick to Tall ranges in Topshop, DPs. It gets my goat even paying £55 for Long Tall Sally. Designer shoes don't tend to come in my size and width either. It's a good job really as I'm terrible with money so don't need any more excuses to spend. Ted Baker tops are nice and often quite well fitted for me, but I only ever get them off ebay as I can't bear to pay over the odds for a basic jersey top.

I have had a Chloe paddington bag, but it was terrible quality so went back. I've had a Balenciaga, but second hand, and the same with my Mulberrys. Recent splurge was a French Connection bag worth £245 but JLs were selling it by mistake for £90 so win for me.

Probably the most I spend in one go would be on a good winter coat if there happens to be one available in Tall. I will buy one each season but they're never more than £90 at the most.

My jack wolfskin coat I got back in '06 and paid £150 for it and still going strong. Apart from that a £55 dress on sale in Debenhams. Shoes wise my current new calf length boots @ £60 I really am a cheapskate shopper. ☹️

I do like New Look boots.

The most for me is a £180 on a leather jacket over 10 years ago. I still wear it and it just about fits me so it was worth it. I am a lot more tight with my money then l used to be so no big purchases going forward l don’t think. I love a bargain and l am good at bargain hunting. Then again l would love a Mulberry handbag, l promised myself one after l finished re-training to be a mental health nurse but it never happened. Maybe l need to hit the overtime again after the wedding….

I think the most expensive clothing I own are the Dolce & Gabbana boots hubby brought me for Christmas hopefully he found them in a sale but they were over a grand when I was swooning over them in Harrods.

As for clothes I brought myself I'm a complete designer ho so have lots of expensive pieces:

My first designer purchase when I was 18 after bagging a promotion and fat pay rise was a pair of funky Armani jeans for £280 (that was before Armani went a bit sh!t) I still wear them occasionally now. I got a little bit addicted to designer fashion after that.

I have 4<5 pairs of shoes that were between £300<£700

Dolce & Gabbana denim jacket I brought when I was about 21 was over £300 I still have it in my wardrobe but too fat to fit in it.

    About £50. I'm a New Look girl!

I was a student til I was 24 so I never had the money for expensive clothes, and now I'm working I'd still rather spend my money on other things.

Recently spent £89 on a handbag - and it was a bit of an impulse buy but I've used it everyday since. I tend to pick stuff up in sales - my most recent and favourite pair of boots were £55 down from £120. Having said that I have brought a pair of running trainers for £120 before - and I tend to go through a pair in 4-6 months. I've changed brands now but the cost of trainers annoys me.

I don't tend to spend too much on clothes as I tend to go off things quickly so the money isn't worth it. However, I do spend quite abit on shoes, handbags and purses. My dearest shoes were £220, I don't think I own a bag that was less than £100 and have quite a collection of purses around the £50. I do rotate my bags a lot so they all get used but once I have a new purse I rarely go back to another (carnt be arsed to swap all my cards over again!)

I haven't had a new bag for well over 6month though (stupid wedding!) but I've got my birthday coming up so might treat myself ?

£200 on a dress from Ted Baker and £295 in Reiss on a coat - which was in the sale! I am trying to think if I've ever spent more. I bought a dress which was £150 in the sale, originally it was over £300 I think, it was a gorgeous Teal beaded number from Karen Millen, but I got it at the outlet.

I am currently wearing all Primark and new look, so I'm happy to spend a lot or a little as long as I like it.

Shoes wise I once bought a pair of Carvela shoes for £150 and the matching bag for £80. Luckily I bloody love them and I'd just had PPI come back so it was a treat!

Bag - £260 on a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag - I love it and have used it constantly for nearly a year so far. I'd never normally spend that much on a bag but I was in Florida waith loads of spending money but didn't want to buy many clothes as I'd not lost enough weight. So I treated myself to the bag instead. That was a great day!

Clothes - £90 on a dress for Royal Ascot - only worn once! I'm usually more of a New Look and Primark girl though.
