What is your momma wearing??

RogueSnowflake, 21 April, 2015 at 17:15 Posted on Planning 0 26

Hi gang,

Just wanted some recommendations for M.O.B. outfits. My mum and I are not having much luck on the high street, and she needs a dress with sleeves.

Is there a rule on colour? Should she stick to the colour scheme?

I think she is starting to panic.

My mum is wearing a champagne gold shift dress with a dark brown box jacket. She's having it made as she is so fussy about everything, we decided this would be best!

I don't think there is a particular colour MOB's should wear, or even that they should stick to a colour scheme. As long as it suits them and you are both happy, that's all that matters.

I'm not sure of your budget, but if my mum was buying from a shop I would be sending her to Jaques Vert or Coast, or somewhere like that. Maybe she could compromise with wearing a jacket instead of a dress with sleeves?

No, there are no rules. Mine saw lots of dresses she liked in debenhams and did eventually get one from there, it was brown and gold. Annoyingly you can't see it very well in the pics as she has her coat on, but here's a flash to give you an idea! (sorry, rubbish quality pic, it's a photo of a photo)

No particular rules, but generally white, black and/or something revealing are not usually worn. I wouldn't expect her to match the wedding colours either. I'd go by what complements her skin/hair colour. (ok, maybe flourescent colours are a no no too!)

As someone else said, what about a matching jacket on a short sleeved dress?

Some other places to look incl Monsoon, M&S, John Lewis, house of fraser, BHS or even TKMaxx. Maybe a smaller boutique and some bridal shops also have a MOB section.

There are also millinery shops that rent out hats, (if she is wearing one), and generally they are unique, so she wont be matching other guests.

    Thanks all!

I think she already has a picture of what she wants in her mind (takes me back to myself, wedding dress shopping!! We are too similar!) so I will see if I can get her to think about other options. I just want her to feel fabulous!

    Thanks for the suggestions!

My mum is wearing a light grey lace shift dress with a very light pink jacket. She wanted to make sure she didn't clash with any of the colours, but I wasn't fussed. I'd agree with what others have said about wearing a jacket, maybe that will alleviate some of the worries about sleeves.

I think age is a factor in outfit choice too. My mum is 63, some other MOBs here might be mid-40s (ie closer to my age!)

Has your Mum tried Roman or M&Co? I think they are pretty reasonably priced and age appropriate. Don't know if they have anything with sleeves, but you may struggle with sleeves for this time of year, so she may be better with a jacket as well.

I don't think there are any 'rules' as to whether she should stick to the colour scheme, I think generally most brides just like MOB and MOG to stay away from white/cream.

My mum also wants sleeves and not fitted. We have struggled to find many but haven't had a huge look yet. Jacques very did some ( debenhams often have lots of concession stores with sales) alternately per una can sell them too.

my mum isn't keen on the jacket idea as underneath she still would not have sleeves so would feel uncomfortable having to wear it all day.

colour wise- whatever she wants. I don't think you should or need to coordinate. Most mobs and mogs tend to just wear different colours to each other.

Thanks all, yes my mum feels the same about the jacket.

There's some great advice here, I hope this shopping experience isn't as stressful as trying to find my dress!

My mum is conscious of her arms so she wore a dress and jacket. Then changed the jacket to a bolero for the evening do.

Sorry it's bad quality - it's screenshot and cropped!

Nope. she can wear anything she wants as long as she's comfy and you can probably just suggest so it won't be to far off from your wedding theme. Smiley smile

    My mum had two outfits,

Can only find pic of one though for some reason:

The other was fairly similar but was a lovely olive green colour. Both from Roman Originals, as was the MIL's outfit!

Ive no idea what my mum or my fiancés mum will be wearing - and yes I know we get married in a little over 2 months.

To say that my mum is difficult to dress is an understatement. I think its going to be more difficult than finding my dress! :-/
