What location?

irrelephant, 15 June, 2009 at 20:23 Posted on Honeymoons & Getting Married Abroad 0 10

We're thinking of getting married abroad and have thought of france and italy. My parents are all for going somewhere like the caribbean (sp?) but mr delicious is sensitive to too much sun and i can't cope with extreme heat. Thats why we thought france or italy might be better?

Where did you all go and what places would you recommend?

Thanks! x

I went to my friend's wedding in Rome last year, it was the best wedding I've ever been to. Fantastic scenery (we went on a tour of the city for photos), relaxed atmosphere, brilliant and delicious food (all 9 courses!), quick but intimate service, beautiful weather.

You'll be advised to use a wedding planner in Italy though as the regulations are a bit awkward, for example you can only book your wedding 6 months in advance (you are likely to get your chosen location so long as you do book exactly 6 months in advance). It was very hot, that was early September but it you go later in the year or early spring, or further north in Italy.

Have you considered Greece? some friends of ours are looking there and there are some lovely places.

Your friends wedding wouldnt happen to be featured in you and your wedding magazine this month would it? both me and Mr delicious read an article about a wedding in rome and loved all the stuff they did!

We've looked into some of the laws and like that we only have to be there for four days rather than frances forty-six!

We've not thought of greece though so might go and have a look now.

I am worried now though as my cousin has just announced theyre getting married in spain next may and when i mentioned to my grandma that we are considering italy for three or four years time she seemed to get a bit annoyed with me and said 'but it puts up costs for everyone involved!' so now i'm worried. I think we could get a better deal if we go abroad but i don't want to inconvenience anyone.

No, it's not in a magazine. It's quite common in Rome to do a tour, both times I've been to Rome I've seen lots of weddings at the popular sites. We even saw two other wedding parties on our tour.

The thing with going abroad is that you have to accept that a lot of people won't be able to make it. Especially elderly relatives and those with young children. The advantage is you get to spend a week with those that do make it, and you can still have a party when you get back to see those that couldn't make it (although they will still be dissappointed to not actually be there when you get married).

You rarely do it without upsetting anyone, but I don't know anyone who did it abroad that regretted it after.

I think perhaps my grandma is worried that as theyre getting on a bit they won't be able to make it abroad. but at the same time i'm worried they won't make it full stop which is an awful thing to say but it really does worry me.

We've accepted that some people won't be able to come if we do decide to do it. Mr delicious has yet to mention it to his family as they keep saying they don't want to hear about any wedding plans for another two years. This puts us in a weird position as it means we can't decide what kind of thing to go for as we will either have to start booking things next year if we do it here or decide if its realistic to do it abroad but can't do either unless they talk to us about what is realistic for them and what isnt IYSWIM?

I guess it also depends on what time of year you are looking at. Lots of the European resorts would be cooler in the earlier and later months rather than going for high season. We married in Rhodes in August so it was extremely hot, but it's much cooler in say May or October, same for many of the Greek Islands.

I do think Italy looks beautiful but have heard it's quite expensive from a friend of mine who enquired (and is getting married in UK now in 2 weeks). I love the look of some of France too - have seen people use vineyards and the pics were great. Guess it depends on your budget also.

I would regret you - wedding in Poland Smiley smile

there are as romantic places as in Italy or France.. but it's not so crowded and much cheaper.

I would suggest Italy. The most romantic places in Italy to get married are above all Venice! ?

    Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Europe has a cornucopia of destinations to choose from.

If you are beach people your trip should include places like the French Riviera or Canary Islands.

If you like looking at old architecture then Greece, Russia, or France would be great options.

Looking for romance then Paris, several places in Italy, or Santorini Greece would be good options.

If you are looking for some adventure then Amsterdam is a thought.

Depending on how much time you want to spend in Europe you can do something that has a land tour combined with a Greek Isle cruise. During the land portion you can do a package that would have free time and escorted tours.

Using a travel agent is a really good idea to find out what you can get for the money you want to spend and to make recommendations of where to stay, things to do and places to eat.
