What on earth is this guest going to eat?!

Jay-Low, 17 February, 2011 at 18:54 Posted on Planning 0 27

Sent out our invites on Monday and have been really pleased to have received 2 acceptances in the post already.

A few people have also called/text to say they have received them and will formally RSVP soon.

One of my OH's friends phoned to say thanks for the invite but that his girlfriend can't eat anything on our menu - she is allergic to dairy and wheat and is a vegetarian!! I'm going to have to ring venue tomorrow and see what they can do.

Anyone else had a similar problem and have your venue been accommodating??

She can eat veggie, vietnamese summer rolls. Rice paper, rolled up with veggies inside.

I am sure with someone like that, she has come across this before. Can she not make a few suggestions to give you and/or the chef a few ideas?

    Ooh thank you!

    Our veggie starter is:

cream of tomato and basil soup (so hoping she can just have a version without the cream)

    Our veggie main is:

steamed herb crepes with roasted butternut squash, garlic and rosemary. served with a tomato & paprika coulis (is there such as thing as wheat free crepes?!?)

    And dessert is either

Chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream

    or

Pineapple tart tatin with coconut & malibu ice cream

Apparently she eats vegetable soup followed by mango sorbet for lunch and dinner EVERY DAY!! I'm sure the venue must have had requests like this before I'm just not sure how "off menu" we can get for her. I'll check with them tomorrow.

Sorry i meant to say thats what it sounds like she is. Most venues should be aware of this disease and alternative products that can be used.

Desserts easy and with your pineapple etc she could have a pineapple and coconut based fruit salad (I'm thinking tropical with papaya and mango rather than out of a tin with pear and manky grape)

Wheat free crepes are available from supermarkets - but the packaging tastes better than the crepe! (and they usually contain milk) But she could have a roasted vegetable medley (butternut squash, sweet potato, red onion, other root veggies) cooked in a rosemary and garlic oil, the smells would compliment the others in the room. I'd usually serve this with meat but mabe a flavoured cous cous.

If the venue are making the soup from scratch they should be able to do as you suggested, if not a salad might be the way forward.

Above all get a list from her what she can't have, then go to the venue and make sure your really specific that they check these things - I've worked in a pub that used gravy that contained milk so the allergens can turn up anywhere.

    HTH x

Thank you very much for this! At least I can go to the chef with an idea of what I'm talking about.

Anything vegan served with rice or potatoes (so risotto perhaps, or vegetable tower and potatoes with a tomato jus?)

I am sure the chef will come up with something!

Im having a gluten free guest and she is elderly and I didnt want her to be stuck with nothing to eat. I spoke with the venue and they came up with a suitable menu really quickly.

I think venues will have seen all sorts of dietry requirements so I dont think you need to worry about asking.

We are feeding her as asparagus salad without crutons for starter (rest of us having cheese and onion tart), she eats meat so same chicken main as everyone else (maybe yours could have quorn?) and for dessert she is having sorbet (rest of us having a trio of strawberry sorbet/ choc pyramid/ lemon tart).

What a terrible reason for turning down an invite !( I assume that is what she did ? I would have hushed up and taken a bag of crisps ! lol

I have been wheat and dairy free and it is a pain in the bum (I was this guest!), I would suggest soup minus the cream as you said, you could turn the main course into rissoto quite easily or there is special pasta which she could have instead. sorbet is definitely infinitely better tasting that dairy free ice cream!

Wheat free pasta is actually quite nice now (used to taste like cardboard), spaghetti even better so I would suggest that with the vegetables, easy to do as an alternative dish for the chef.

Well I'm feeling a little less sympathetic today because my OH spoke to his friend again to clarify what his gf can & can't eat before I speak to the venue. In addition to her allergies (which of course she can't help) and the fact she is a vegetarian it turns out she 'doesn't like' rice, pasta or potato products!! At this rate she will be getting some salad leaves and a glass of water (she doesn't drink alcohol either)

Hmmmm this does seem a bit of a nightmare, but salad does seem to be the way to go! There's so many products out there for coeliacs and lactose-intolerant people, but this girl seems like she needs a good slap!!! I'm fussy but how can you not like potato or pasta?!

NB - as a carbohydrate addict I don't get it either but horses for courses I guess!! I also can't understand how she can manage to eat enough calories to sustain herself with all the things she can't eat!

    Hi Vicky,

I am also diary and gluten intolerant, and have been for many years.

Its not a problem for me, there are lots of things your guests can eat.

Most venue will come across this from time to time, and as long as they are aware they will accommodate your guests. (The last thing you want to do is make them ill)

If you pm me your menu, I will be able to advise you, it maybe just a simple tweak and adoption to your currant menu.(Why does everyone think we only eat salad) lol,

    Elizabeth

Elizabeth, the menu is posted on here, but by the sounds of this girl she will end up with a salad as she has dietary intolerances AND is fussy!

    Hi Vicky,

Seen you have already posted the menu already, blind as a bat lol

cream of tomato and basil soup (so hoping she can just have a version without the cream) This should be fine, like you say without the cream and butter, as long as they do not thicken this with wheat flour, corn flour is OK.( But if the chef is making this from scratch, this wont be a problem, alternatively they could have melon.

    Our veggie main is:

steamed herb crepes with roasted butternut squash, garlic and rosemary. served with a tomato & paprika coulis (is there such as thing as wheat free crepes?!?)

(This also can be done with gluten free flour and soya milk, very easy).

    And dessert is either

Chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream There is a diary free ice cream option and the brownie would have to be adapted, alternatively if they can tolerate the egg white, they could have fresh fruit and meringue.

    or

Pineapple tart tatin with coconut & malibu ice cream All of the above can be adapted, this just depends on the chef really. (Have a word with the venue to get advise on this)

If this is a true food intolerance, like mine this should be taken very seriously because potentially this would make your guests ill.

Unfortunately you cant please everyone all of the time, and some times some people are just picky. (which can be a pain) Unless there are true medical or veggie reason's why the guests cant have what's already on the menu, I would just serve it, and they can leave what they dont want on there plate.

I hope that helps ? good luck.

Oh my god, if I was ever diagnosed with any food allergies i would need a lot of counselling - especially if I was allergic to chilli's.

    I love eating.

So far, only 2 veggie's (I am having veggie too just cause I want to). Plus one person who I thought was veggie now eats chicken!? Strange!

I love my food, and have just found ways of adapting every thing, took me years to do it though. (It was a challenge, to say the least)

It much easier now to get alternative foods out there than it used to be.

We are both lucky really, we love cooking and baking.

Venues will be used to all sorts of food allergies etc. Personally, I'd suggest he or his girlfriend ring the venue and arrange something suitable between them, that way it's one less thing for you to worry about and if she gets the wrong thing, you won't feel responsible!

The wheat thing is easy! Just make sure whatever you give her is gluten free. there's a huge range out there (tesco) of gluten free things. My brother was coeliac.
