What questions should I ask photographer?

Penny P, 29 September, 2013 at 21:07 Posted on Planning 0 9

I am meeting a potential photographer this week and would like to know if there is anything in particular I should be asking apart from the obvious?

Any tips please!

We're doing this at the moment - have asked

    - about their shooting style and how they like to cover weddings

    - whether they are happy to work from a list for group/formal shots

    - if we can see samples of: indoor, outdoor, sunny, wet weddings as well as day/night, group, portrait, informal shots etc etc

    - who owns the images - and whether or not you get them at the end in hi-res

    - OH also asked a bit about kit, but that's because he's a bit of a geek Smiley smile

And just having a general chat with them about your wedding, your style and personalities and seeing if you get on with them - you want to make sure you have a good connection with them as they will be the ones charged with capturing the essence of your day! Smiley smile

Pretty much everything Alabastamasta said really Smiley smile

We wanted to find out in particular who owns them (another tog wanted to charge us another £200 to buy the images afterwards), how many images you get and if it's high res discs. And just if we clicked with them properly and felt comfortable with them, turns out we loved them and feel much more at ease Smiley smile

If you can see a whole wedding gallery and then hopefully they should cover everything else themselves. Just see how you click with them too as that's important.

This is a good one, photographing weddings in perfect weather is easy. Bad weather, Indoors, bad light--- thats when you can see if they are any good. So ask to see samples taken indoors, look out for, burnt out dress detail, and thick shadows behind the subject. Bad weather wedding photography here

And yes you do need to see a whloe wedding but not just 1 whole wedding, as that is the one that THEY want you to see, which has been hand picked by them as a good one, ask to see the very latest wedding instead or even the one they have nearest your date

Also ask when things need to be paid deposit finial payment etc.. - ask for a contract to we contacted on that didnt believe in contracts - We agreed that was a NO before we met with them!

I also agree with the above!

Also ask what happens if for some reason they cannot make it due to illness or etc.. - From what I can gather majority of photographers will not cancel but they do have a back up plan if needed!

I guess ask how many photos you are likely to get? And just have a good natter to see if you guys see eye to eye as you'll be sharing alot of time together on the day!

Probably an obvious one but ask to make sure the tog has public liability insurance and whether it will be sufficient enough for your venue.

The most important thing is to see whole weddings and I don't mean just one but 3 minimum, I know it can get boring but you just have to make sure the photographer knows what they are doing otherwise you will be posting on that regrets thread.

If you have insurance for your wedding, most insurers will not pay out if you don't have a contract with the relevant supplier.Do check on this....
