What readings are ou having?

leni, 8 September, 2009 at 11:08 Posted on Planning 0 15

OH won't help with choosing the readings as the church is "my thing".?

anyhow their suggestions don't feel right for us! The only one I like is Mark 10 6-9, 13-16 but H2B said he'll start laughing at the bit about Jesus touching children!

I've just read this passage cos I'm also looking for a religious reading but after reading your post I can see what your OH means - how funny! Anyway, can't help on the religious reading as I'm also stuck on that but for our non religious reading we're having "The Art of Marriage" - there is a short and a long version of this. I like the way it's about marriage not being just about finding the right person but about being the right partner.

This was our religious reading... we also had winnie the pooh and captain corelli's mandolin - they are all about togetherness so fitted really well together.

    Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their work:

    10 If one falls down,
his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls
and has no one to help him up!

11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?

12 Though one may be overpowered,

    two can defend themselves.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Can i just ask what quote from winnie the pooh?

we're having a quote from one of my favourite books wuthering heights...some think its cheesy, but without being corny, its perfect for us

'If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it.'

    Us Two

    by A. A. Milne

Wherever I am, there's always Pooh,

    There's always Pooh and Me.

Whatever I do, he wants to do,

"Where are you going today?" says Pooh:

"Well that's very odd 'cos I was too.

Let's go together," says Pooh, says he.

    "Let's go together," says Pooh.

'What's twice eleven?' I said to Pooh,

('Twice what?' said Pooh to Me)

'I think it ought to be twenty-two.'

'Just what I think my self,' said Pooh.

'It wasn't an easy sum to do,

But that's what it is,' said Pooh, said he.

'That's what it is,' said Pooh.

'Let's look for dragons,' I said to Pooh.

'Yes, let's,' said Pooh to Me

We crossed the river and found a few--

'Yes, these are dragons all right,' said Pooh.

'As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.

That's what they are,' said Pooh, said he.

'That's what they are,' said Pooh.

"Let's frighten the dragons," I said to Pooh.

"That's right," said Pooh to Me.

"I'm not afraid," I said to Pooh,

And I held his paw and I shouted "shoo!

Silly old dragon!" - and off they flew.

"I wasn't afraid," said Pooh, said he,

    "I'm never afraid," with you."

So wherever I am, there's always Pooh,

    There's always Pooh and Me.

'What would I do?' I said to Pooh,

'If it wasn't for you,' and Pooh said: 'True,

it isn't much fun for One, but Two

Can stick together,'; says Pooh, says he.

'That's how it is,' says Pooh.

Not sure on the religious reading, think we'e going to let my aunt (who would be doing the reading) choose herself - although I like the one pink alien's mentioned!

Karen - what about e.e.cummings 'i carry your heart' as a modern love poem? We're considering it for one of our non-religious readings (we'd like to have two non-religious if vicar agrees!) along with Union by Robert Fulgham and A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton.

We're having If by Rudyard Kipling....unusual but my favourite poem and OH gave me a locket with it engraved. We are cutting out the final 'you'll be a man my son' as it would be a bit odd.

I found this one yesterday and really liek it as my non religious reading:

When the one whose hand you're holding
Is the one who holds your heart
When the one whose eyes you gaze into
Gives your hopes and dreams their start,
When the one you think of first and last
Is the one who holds you tight,
And the things you plan together
Make the whole world seem just right,
When the one whom you believe in
puts their faith and trust in you,
You've found the one and only love
You'll share your whole life through.

We're having a civil ceremony so we don't have the religious ones but i am having trouble deciding.

I found a lovely Chinese Poem, which would be nice as H2Bs mums family is origionally from Hong Kong so i think she'd like it. It goes...

I wasnt to be your friend forever and ever. When the hills anre all flat and the rivers run dry. When the trees blossom in winter And the snow falls in summer. When heaven and earth mix. Not 'til then will i part from you.

Problem is because of the heaven bit i don't think we'll be allowed it so might try and use it somewhere else in the day as i love it.

Another one i like is call 'These i can promis...' although can't remember who its by.

I cannot promise you a life of sunshine

I cannot promise riches, wealth or gold

I cannot promise you an easy pathway that leads away from change or growing old.

But i can promise all my hearts devotion

A smile to chase away you tears or sorrow

A love thats ever true and ever growing

A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow

    Hi

Were having a civil wedding as were not religious but I thought I would share the readings weve picked (although I love the one Karen has posted above!!)

First were having Eskimo Love Song:

You are my husband, you are my wife, My feet shall run because of you, My feet dance because of you, My heart shall beat becasue of you, My eyes see because of you, My mind thinks because of you, And I shall love because of you.

and: Today I Married My Best Friend:

Today I married my best friend, Our bond complete it hath no end, We share one soul, we share one heart, a perfect time, a perfect start. With these rings we share together. Love so close to last forever, This special day, two special heats, let nothing keep this love apart.

Aparently it made h2b cry when I txt him these for his approval and at 6ft6 ex american -football player that doesnt happen very often lol so I knew these were the right readings!!

We are having this as our non religous reading -

    1lb butter of youth.
    4lbs of love.
    1lb of good looks,
    1lb of sweet temper.
    3lb of self forgetfulness.
    1lb of pounded wit.
    1lb of blindness of faults.
    1lb of good humour.
    1 tablespoon of sweet argument.
    1 pint of rippling laughter.
1 wine glass of common sense.
    1oz of modesty.
Put the love, good looks and sweet temper into a well furnished house. Beat the butter of youth to a cream, and mix well together with the blindness of faults. Stir the pounded wit and good humour into the sweet argument, then add the rippling laughter and common sense. Work the whole together until everything is well mixed, and bake gently for ever.

And im not sure about a religous one yet, they all seem a bit too much if you get what I mean...
