What relation would you be to........

DebbieD, 14 April, 2008 at 16:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

What relation would you be to your cousin's child? Would you be a cousin once removed or something daft like that, or no relation at all?

If it was first cousin then it'd make the child your second cousin.

I was going to say your second cousin. But is that not like if your parent has a cousin then they are your second cousin??? Confusing stuff.

I think you'd be a 1st cousin once removed. It's more complicated than just being a second cousin, I think.

    About.com says:

If someone walked up to you and said "Hi, I'm your third cousin, once removed," would you know what they meant? Most of us don't think about our relationships in such exact terms ("cousin" seems good enough), so most of us aren't familiar with what these words mean. When working on your family history, however, it's more important to understand the various types of cousin relationships.

First cousins are the people in your family who have two of the same grandparents as you.
Second cousins have the same great-grandparents as you, but not the same grandparents.
Third cousins have in common two great-great-grandparents and their ancestors.
When cousins descend from common ancestors by a different number of generations they are called “removed.”

Once removed means there is a difference of one generation. Your mother's first cousin would be your first cousin, once removed. She is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents.
Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. Your grandmother's first cousin would be your first cousin, twice removed because you are separated by two generations.

If your first cousin has a child it's your first cousin once removed.
Any child you have will be the 2nd cousin of the other child.

When I went to our family reunion in Switzerland, nearly 15 years ago, there were 120 people sitting down to dinner and we were all related. Ranging in age from 6 months to 98.

I learnt to say in German "Your great grandfather was the brother of my great-great grandfather". Or something similar.

That's how I learnt about cousins and being removed etc.

1st cousin once removed - the 'removed' denotes you're a generation apart.

your child and your cousin's child are second cousins

(we were at a family wedding last weekend with assorted offspring of cousins, hence knowing the answer!)

So if you are the product (child) of 2 1st cousin marrying then your father could also be your cousin once removed? If he wasn't your father I mean.

    I don't understand.

    A simple explanation:

Your mum is an only child, your father has a sister.
    That sister is your aunt.
Her child is your first cousin.
If your aunt's child has a child it's your first cousin once removed.
If you have a child, your child & your aunt's child's child are 2nd cousins.

If your mum and dad were 1st cousins (so that your nans were sisters) if your mum and dad hadn't married - what relation would your dad be?

    I think I understand.

your mum & dad are first cousins.
As the offspring of one of them, you would be the first cousin once removed to the other. And vice versa.

Hang on...you said nans. First cousins share grandparents so there could only be 1 nan.
Look at the diagram on the wikipedia link - it explains it far better than I'm doing.
