What shall I do with half a bin bag of cooking apples?

catarina, 3 September, 2010 at 20:02 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

And don't say cook them!

I asked my mum for some so I could make an apple crumble and a few pots of stewed apples for the kids, but I don't really need 15 apple crumbles, so need some apple-y inspiration please!

Anyone made a good apple cake or any recipes to share?

I'm not a big fan of apple pie, so steering clear of that.

You could stew it and freeze it until you want to make another crumble/pie that's what I do.

How the heck do you that then? I do like a bit of tarte tartin, but it looks a bit complicated - like you might need an NVQ in French Patisserie know how before attempting something like that!

Apples with dried fruit - liking that. Very easy.

Ooh yes, that will take care if it all for me! I might have to do it batches, I can't possibly peel that many apples in one go! It's going to take HOURS.

Go out looking for blackberries (If you have any left near you? Ours are disappearing fast!) and make apple and blackberry jam Smiley smile - Ready to give as xmas presents!!

hmmmm. I might investigate it and if it looks doable have a go over the next few days.

Gemma Louise - Getting the kids to do it? No way, I can't imagine the damage a pre schooler and toddler could do with peelers. Actually I can, that's why I'm saying no way ?

oooh, I know where some are as well! Well, were 2 weeks ago.

That would fit in with my cheap Christmas plan too. I'm going to have to do some proper investigating and make decisions now.

Blackberries over ripen/dry up/get eaten sooooo quick. 2 weeks ago me, H2B and my little niece went picking for half an hour and got a huge jug full of lovely blackberries but a week later there were none.. Gutted Smiley sad

Next year I'll be doing the blackberry and apple jam thing for my wedding favours!

ETA - If there are no blackberries you could do just apple jam or apple sauce for roast dinners!

That's a lovely idea! I made different types of fudge as my favours- big mistake, it was much harder than I thought and took me a whole week to make enough that worked. I have not made, or eaten fudge since, completely put me off. And to top it off, the venue forgot to put them out on the tables and I didn't even notice ? Everyone got a'party bag' to take home instead ?

Oh no haha!! I secretly ate some of H2B's birthday fudge earlier, so yummy! Don't think my culinary skills could reach to fudge so could on you for mastering it, even if it took a week!

My boss gave me some fudge to try a few months back, as I was eating it she asked me what I thought the secret ingredient was.. No idea.. PARSNIPS!! Yuk, so so wrong!!

Bit late to this. We have a huge cooking apple tree.

I make a gorgeous apple chutney, will type out recipe if you would like.

Also peel core and slice then chuck into lemoned water to stop them going brown, shake them off, put them in a layer onto a baking sheet, freeze then bag them up so they aren't all stuck together and take out as many as you want when you want and use as normal.

This upside down peach and butterscotch pudding from the bero website which I use apples for. Basically apples in butterscotch with a sponge mix on to - soo easy. Sorry can't do linkies from that site but just go to be-ro.com and go into their recipe inspiration section and look under puddings. I have also made this with plums.
