What song would you choose for the school bell? help needed!!!

Dazzlegirl, 27 April, 2009 at 18:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

At our school we don't have a traditional bell, we have a piece of music which is changed every week. The music is about 2 minutes long and is played at the start of school and the end of every lesson.

Previous song choices have been; I will survive, Greatest day, Jitterbug etc. A member of staff chooses the song each week and i missed out on my turn as was on maternity leave. However, I am going to pester to be put back on the list so need a song. I thought OT could help me come up with a good choice?

The song is not allowed to contain swear words ? or have a bad meaning behind the lyrics! Please also bear in mind that song choice have a HUGE impact on behaviour! It is really interesting to watch! Song choices are so emotive - One song choice would be "Wind beneath my wings" which left several children in tears as it was from Grandma's funeral.

I want to choose a cool song.. the kids always ask who chose a song and if it is awful you're in trouble! Please also bear in mind that we all have to hear it about 10 times a day for five days! It is for a secondary school 11-16 year olds

So go on! what would you choose?

Just asked my OH and he suggested a 'beep' and they have to get to their next class before the next beep or they get beheaded...he's not really entering into the spirit of things.

Strange ides but I quite like it, anything would be better than the bell, siren, flashing lights combo we now have!

Don't know what age range you have, but I have used M people - proud, S club 7 - reach for the stars (not sure I could cope with that all week though!! although I have used it for SATs week before) can't think of any more at the minute.

Wish they did this when I was at school!

I'd choose Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode. They'd all know the lyrics from The Saturdays but they would get to hear the song in its original glory.

How fab! We have a totally horrendous bell. I'm a music teacher and would love your system...

    I'd suggest

    • Build me up Buttercup- The Foundations
    • Birdhouse in your soul- They Might Be Giants
    • Swing swing- All American Rejects
    • Afternooon Delight- Fromw the Anchorman soundtrack (You'd be pushing it...)
    • Play that funky music- Wild Cherry

Gosh, I wish my school could do this! I might suggest it when I go back from Maternity leave.

Don't stop me now- Queen (or I suppose you could do the McFly cover)

Hey, you get off my cloud- Rolling Stones

Wake me up before you go go- Wham (think the jitterbug start would be great)

    In the Air tonight- Genesis

Magic Moments- Perry Como (Only because I love singing this and then hearing people singing it hours later because it's become their earworm!!!)

I also agree with the Glenn Miller In the Mood (it's our doorbell chime and we love it in a cheesefest way!!)

Thanks so much for the suggestions. Me and H are having great fun discussing them and singing the tunes. A couple I need to look up as can't think of what they are ?

We moved into a new building a couple of years ago and it was decided that the school bell would be music. It usually works really well. Some music delays the students and they don't hurry to lessons. Some moves them off the corridors fast and they dance to the next lesson! I personally don't like this week's choice which is Hoobastank - Change Direction. Chosen by the Head. Some kids did not move well to the next lesson. It is really interesting how music to affect the entire school! Also you can start the week loving the music and then by the end of the week hate it and not like it ever again because it reminds you of school.

A few suggestions have been done already and both went down well including Valerie and Build me up Buttercup.

I like loads of suggestions including With a little Help from my Friends and Time of your life. Hmmm ....

All you need is love - The Beatles

Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Rae Cyrus (that'll teach them for liking his daughter)

    Young Hearts (run free)

    REM - shiny happy people

    Pat & Mick - Let's all chant ?

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing or walk of life

You could maybe draw some inspiration from the musicals...

    Defying Gravity - Wicked

Title song from Sound of Music

Title song from Phantom of the Opera

Any Dream Will Do - Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

    Consider Yourself - Oliver

Not everyone's cup of tea, obviously, but I put them on in the car on the way to work and I do find a good musical wakes me up in the morning if I'm feeling particularly comatose.
