What things are you unreasonably annoyed by?

RachelHS, 12 December, 2008 at 14:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 59

As per the title - what things make you want to have a really unreasonable rant?

For me, it's the behaviour of some people at work around one of the doors in our office. I work in a secure office, which means you need swipe cards to get in, and have to push a button to get out. To get into any of the working areas, you have to go through at least two of these secure doors. They remodelled the office not too long ago and put an extra door in - as a result, there is a door which used to be secure but doesn't need to be any more.

It still has it's swipe card reader and push button, but they're not switched on. Some people haven't realised they're not switched on, however, so still swipe or push the button. As I know you no longer have to swipe, I don't bother, but just walk towards the door and open it as normal - but if one of these people is there, I see them scramble to swipe their card for me (which would be a breach of security if I needed to swipe to get through this particular door) or push the button, while giving me evil looks for making them open the door for me.

I get rather annoyed at this, but realise that this is not reasonable - after all, they think they're doing me a favour. I just imagine that they're thinkin I'm a lazy ungrateful cow as I make them open the door for me every time...

The Iceland advert with Jason, Kerry and that Nolan woman singing. I hate the lyrics, the false cheer, the crappy food but most of all I hate their stupid smug faces.

Actually scrub all that I've just realised you asked for unreasonable annoyances.

    Everything annoys me.

People who repeatedly press elevator/traffic light buttons as if the lift will come quicker/traffic lights will change quicker.
People who stand on 'my' spot on the station platform.
People who take 'my' seat on the train.
People who make any noise at all on the train, be it talking, sniffing, phone conversations etc etc

Is it bad that I can't think of any unreasonable annoyances as all the ones I can think of seem perfectly reasonable to me??

People in my team at work who very kindly make me a cup of tea which I don't drink - I've never drunk tea and I don't intend to start now! If they ask me if I want a drink I always ask for a glass of water.

Oh, me too! I really hate that advert, it makes me very angry, but I think that's reasonable.

My H hates Twiggy's face when she gets that horrid candlestick in the M&S adverts.

My annoyances today are all totally rational. I hate my poorly ankle, I am annoyed that we have no food in the house, annoyed that I am stuck in the house all on my own...

    WCDS!!

People sniffing has got to be the worst though! I was surrounded yesterday. Guy next to me and two women in front, for the entire 30 min journey were bloody sniffing, it was making me feel physically sick.

The printer at work. It prints on letterheaded paper upside down, turn it round do it again. It decides to print on the back. Turn it over do it again. It prints upside down again. It makes me want to hurt it.

People who don't flush the chain or wash their hands, dirty buggers.

    Hmm...

Vernon Kaye. He makes my skin crawl and I have no idea why.

A mate of a mate. Exactly the same thing as VK. Nice bloke, friendly and not at all creepy. I just can't stand to be in the same room as him. No justification for it at all.

The use of the term "minty" when dealing with antiques, to mean "near mint condition". It makes me irrationally angry. And on more than one occasion I've had to turn on heel and walk away from someone who used it repeatedly to prevent unpleasantness.

Women (invariably with prams/pushchairs) who walk 3/4 abreast in the street at the pace of a funeral cortege and 'tut' (or worse) when you attempt to pass. Really - I have place to be.

Adults who scream, squeal or make yo/yeehah type noises when they're 'having fun'.

Women who believe that they can change my mind about a work related decision by fluttering their eyelashes (or whatever). Not going to happen there madam.

And in broader terms, anyone who expects the law, bye-laws, rules or regulations to legislate to protect them against being devoid of common sense.

    Another train related one...

My railcard doesn't let me through the barriers (my work pass deactivates it which is really frustrating in itself) so I always have to get the guard to let me through. I get really annoyed if there is not a guard standing near my preferred exit and try my hardest not to be huffy with them.

OR if another commuter in front of me asks the said guard for directions and I have to stand there while they explain the route in detail - I just WANT to be let through. <stamps feet>

Also, people who take their entire family to do the supermarket shopping and then let the 6 year old push the trolley.

Magic trees.. I cannot sit in a car with one and I will not sit behind a car if the one infront has one especially if the bag is still hanging off it.

I go out, my choice what time and where I go but everytime I do, the postie has something that needs signed for or won't fit through the letter box etc. I get so worked up about it, its not the poor posties fault.

Things that are annoying me today are:

Stupid work colleague who goes for a smoke every hour and is usually gone for about 20 minutes at a time. If you added up how much time she actually spends out of the office it wouldn't be worth her coming in

Also students, why do they have to be so noisy, i work in an LRC which is essentially the college library and they're making a right racket, also why can't they put books back on the shelves rather than leaving them on tables, i'm not a their mother who goes around cleaning up after them.

People not pushing chairs back under when they're finished with them. I spend half my life pushing chairs back under desks.

    My wife's family trait:

I go to my MILs house and she gives me "soup". MIL is broad Glaswegian and "soup" equates to Scotland's entire annual harvest of plant matter, a large farm's livestock, and dog's hairs all blended down into one bowl capacity.

"Do you like it son?" ( at least I think thats what she said)

    "mmmmn lovely"

Three days later I have a freezer full of the stuff in zip-lock plastic bags.

Mrs 1576: "do you like olives then?"

Numbers: " Um yes they're ok"

The next day: A catering jar crammed with the fecking things in the fridge.

Mrs1576 (two days later): "What a waste!! Why havent you eaten all those olives?!!"

    Maybe Im just ungrateful

    Mr Numbers reminds me . . .

My mother, who doesn't seem to have noticed that in the last 18 years my tastes have changed.

I used to own a 1971 VW Fastback. This translated in her head that I must like all things VW, so I have a never ending supply of candles, picture frames, USB memory keys etc, all in the shape of Camper Vans.

I've never had a particular fondness for the old VW bus even back then.

She then announces "I'm thinking of buying you this hamper"

    "Why?"

"Well everything in it is purple, you like purple"

"No, I used to wear a lot of purple when I was 17 and going throug something of a Goth phase. That was 2 decades ago"

    ? at P&AP

People who think that, if you don't do exactly the same thing as them, you're either deeply arrogant or are being critical of their choices. Err, no, I just don't think that much about which brand of butter I buy or which shop it's from...

11 year olds. arrogant, cretinous, pre-pubescent arseholes.

I have this problem. Made doubley worse by the fact that work bought my railcard for me and if I try and get a replacement card, the man at the station hasn't a clue how to replace it because it was bought from a travel centre, not from them. Oh, and the fact that he only works about 2 days a week and only between the hours of 9am and 9.03am.

Some grumpy git moaned at me to get it replaced last week as he begrudgingly let me through the barrier. Why? It's a valid ticket. He's probably signed off with stress now after having to open the barrier for me. And why do none of them believe me when I say it doesn't work and make me put it through the barrier so they can check? Why would I lie? Why would I want to stand there for half an hour while they give directions to 3 people before me if I could just put my card in the barrier and pass through?

In a similar vein to P&P, my mothers refusal to accept I hate carrots. Everytime I pass on them, we go through the same conversation

    Her 'Don't you like carrots?'

Me 'No, I've never liked them'

Her 'Since when? I thought you liked them'

Me 'Since the day you forced me to eat them as a child and I vomitted them back up on my plate'

Her 'I don't remember that. Are you sure?'

This has been going on for nearly 30 years and she still offers me fucking carrots with dinner.

People who, when explaining something, go up an octave with their voice at the last two words of their sentence, like there was a question mark at the end ?

e.g. "So. I went in to this shop and bought a packet of those little sweets?"

(like you were a fecken idiot who didnt understand a simple sentence!!)

    Infuriating!

At the moment I am also annoyed at the training course I am doing. It's one of those which gives you a pre-course test which you have to complete before proceeding to the actual content of the course. Because I'm doing the course to learn the stuff in it, I scored very low in the pre-course test - like 0%.

I am now discouraged and demoralised, convinced that this stuff must be really hard, and don't want to finish the stupid course.

Who needs to know about cost accounting decisions anyway? I'm sure it's all really obvious, but how the feck am I meant to calculate an incremental contribution margin when I don't even know what one is yet?

CD I think it's quite reasonable to be annoyed about that. My MIL does something similar:

MIL: I'll just go put the kettle on.
    me: [silence]
    MIL: Here's your tea, emma.
me: Thanks, but you shouldn't have. I don't drink tea.
H: Mum, you know emma doesn't like tea.
MIL: Well I've made it now, you might as well drink it.
me: erm, no thanks. I really don't like it.
MIL: How do you know if you don't like it unless you try it? Go on try a bit.
    me: I'd rather not.
MIL: When I was young we were glad of a good hot drink. And if we had a drop of milk too we'd think we were in heaven... blah blah blah...

She's known me for 12 years now and still she tries. She obviously thinks I'm odd for not drinking it but H doesn't drink it either and she never makes him any.

    Oooh sorry for the rant

    [:'(]?

I know exactly what you mean! I have had a guard tell me I am just being lazy by not getting the ticket out of its wallet and put it through the machine. I had to physically show him it doesn't work.

I cannot wait for Oyster cards to be applicable on National Rail.

Edited to say i thought i has replied with quote!

Hurrah!! Someone else! I have always hated carrots (and all other root veg apart from radishes - and before anyone says it, potatoes do not count, they are tubers). My parents didn't believe in fussy eaters, so I always had to eat everything on my plate. I was about 25 when they finally accepted that I really don't like them and it is not a phase I am going through to be awkward. Bless them though, if they have carrots when I'm visiting now they usually do a bit of sweetcorn or something for me instead.

    Forgot to answer the OP!

I hate it when people open things (eg tins of baked beans or packets of crisps) upside down. And I hate it even more when I do it by mistake (almost never) or because for some reason I have to.

Emma, I'm glad I'm not the only one! People look at me like I've grown a new head when I say I don't drink tea or coffee

The Wii advert for a music game with the smug family sitting in their perfect lounge all pretending to play musical instruments, I want to punch every one of them in the face.

Breadcrumbs. They are pointless and messy and annoy the hell out of me if they are not cleared up.

I used to have a similar discussion with my mum about cucumber - I've never liked it, ever. She remembers now after I made a big fuss about it over dinner one night. ?

I am unreasonably aggravated by people who start sentences with "Personally, I..."

The word I implies personally. Grrrrrr.

And on a similar note, my colleagues have all started writing "according to..." on every piece of work. It's such a horrid passive, unnecessary phrase. Just use "say" and be done with it. Grrrr

God so many things to mention....too many things!

When people reply to you in an argument/debate and start by saying "I'm sorry but....". No you're not sorry??

When singers hold the microphone and 'open and close' their fingers round it whilst singing. Sorry thats very random but annoys the heck out of me.

At the gym, people 'reserve' 'their' changing room whilst going to the gym or for a swim by hanging their clothes up in it or leaving their bag in it. I secretly hope their stuff gets nicked....

    People who don't indicate.

Whilst queing at the post office there is a line that you are not supposed to cross in order to give you privacy whilst doing your transaction at the counter. Sometimes when its my turn at the window, the numpty behind just steps foward too and stands right behind me.

People standing too close behind me in queues in general.
