What time do you go to bed? And how do you make yourself go to bed early?

Gryfon, 18 June, 2008 at 16:09 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

I'm always tired because I don't tend to get to bed until midnight and then about 7.30am/8am I'm up again because it's either school days or the baby needs me. I don't think I function well on just eight hours sleep, either that or I'm not getting proper sleep!

So what time do you go to bed? If you go late how do you make sure you get a solid nights sleep? And if you get early how do you program yourself to go early as I keep meaning to go to bed at least by 11pm and it just never happens!

I don't have a set routine. I work shifts so I basically sleep when I'm tired and fit the rest of my life around that. Just as well I have no dependants. ?

I know people vary but, if you're very tired after a regular 7-8 hours, I'd think about whether other things might be contributing to your tiredness (poor quality sleep, diet, lack of exercise etc). 8 hours a night sounds like a dream to me ?

Anyway, I tend to go to bed at around midnight and get up at 6am (for the baby) then back to bed for another half hour if she drops off again.

I used to work shifts and slept at really odd times but now I'm pretty good at getting to bed by about 11.30pm. I get up about 7.30am for work 9.30 - 3.30pm and then usually have a 20 minute kip before going back to work at 6pm.

If you're not feeling refreshed after 8 hours, then it might be that the quality of your sleep is poor. Do you wake up during the night?

We tend to have dinner around 7.30 and then relax/do house stuff or watch telly for the evening, walking the dogs around 9pm.

Then I try to head upstairs at about 10 to get my clothes ironed for the following day, then I get ready for bed and am usually in bed either reading or watching Big Brother at about 10.30, the reading will make me sleepy so I'll go to sleep about 11pm and am then up and about at 7am

OH is more erratic and bedtime veries between 10pm and 1am with him but then he gets up later than me (about 8.30am)..

I'm usually in bed by midnight and read for half an hour or so before going to sleep; up again at about 8, or 7 if I'm doing a morning run.

I think some people just need more sleep, I feel tired if I only get 7/8 hours, especially if it happens on a regular basis. If I get 9 hours I'm good to go.

I agree, 8 hours sleep a night and still feeling tired seems a bit odd. Are you feeling well apart from the tiredness?

I got to bed about midnight and get up at 7am. On nights where i feel more tired, i just fall asleep on the sofa anywhere from 10pm onwards and my OH wakes me to go to bed with him at midnight.
We do have quite a 'set routine' though, Mon-Fri anyway. I never go to bed without him as i can't settle so would rather sleep on the sofa for an hour than go to bed alone.

Go to bed between 10 and 10.30pm (sometimes earlier if Im knackered) Get to sleep around 11.30pm (which for the past 6 months is because the BP meds Im on were changed and it zonks me out - before that Id still be awake at 3.30am) up in the morning at 7am.

Im still tired in the morning. In fact Im always tired unless its a weekend and Ive had a lie in until 10am.

I also always set out with good intentions of getting to bed at about 11pm, but very rarely get there much before midnight. Sometimes it's even later - last night I was ironing till 2am!

I know I don't get enough sleep, but the problem is that the only time I really get to do jobs or have time to relax, watch TV etc is from about 9:30pm onwards when the children are both in bed!

On week days my alarm goes off at 6:30am and I tend to get up about 7:15am after pressing snooze lots of times. I reckon I probably average about 6 hrs sleep most nights, sometimes 7 if I'm lucky!

My younger sister classes anything less than 10 hours sleep as a bad night. I don't know how she does it ?

I am so jealous of al of you who don't get up until 8.00.

I get up at 6.00 and like to be in bed by 11.00 (probably earlier but I read until around then).

    I am always tired though.

For 5 years I did a shift that meant getting up at 4.30am and that really messed up my sleep patterns - I used to sleep when I got home from 2.30pm until about 6.00pm and then from midnight until 4.30am. It was the only way to have any sort of social life but it meant that I never really had quality sleep and I think I'm still affected by that even 10 years later.

Bed by midnight, up by 7am - pretty much every day (including weekends). 8am is a lie-in for people with young kids!

I would like eight hours of sleep a night! I reckon I get about 6 most days .. go to bed any time after 11pm but Mr GMT is almost always later, and he makes so much noice there's no point in trying to get to sleep before he comes upstairs. He often dozes off in front of the telly with dogs which doesn't help.

What makes me go to bed? Feeling tired ..... knowing that I've got to get up at 6am and that I've a long day at work ahead of me ...

Thanks ? I don't think I wake up much once I'm asleep, not that I've noticed anyway iykwim. I never used to need so much sleep but since having children I love my bed once I'm in it! I know that if the baby didn't wake me I'd probably wake up naturally just after 9 so it's possible I just need 9 hours sleep.

Shall attempt to get to bed at 11pm! Just that once the children have gone to bed at about 8ish I like some peace and quiet ?

I generally go to bed at about 11-1130, and since a couple of weeks ago I'm up at 6-6.30 to get to the gym before work

I feel like I have much more energy than before, when I was getting up at about 7-8am and going to be at about the same time

I rarely see 10pm during the week. Alarm wake up at 6.30am. I easily sleep 11pm - 9.30am weekends. Its not as if I lie in bed awake, as once im awake I have to get up.

Im one of those people who really need a lot of sleep. If I dont get at least 8 hours I feel really off. Gawd help me when I have kids lol.

I cant help you with the 'how do you make yourself go to bed'. Its all H can do to stop me from going up those stairs at 7pm lol

Actually, it really helps that I have the comfiest bed in England.

I'm normally in bed at 10pm and always go straight to sleep and I then get up at 7am. If I don't get at least 9 hours sleep I'm a horrible grouchy cow the day after.

On Monday night and last night I was up until 11 watching BB and I'm absolutely fooked now.

My 'official' time to go upstairs isis 9, then by the time I've done my teeth etc its usually at least 9.30 but we've been really bad at sticking to that recently and I'm suffering for it. The alarm goes off at 6.30,

I need loads of sleep-may be to do with my heart condition though. Saying that, I did really struggle to feel rested when I was off work with stress.

Edited to add that its usually me who persuades H its time for bed, he'd stay up a lot later (and not be able to get up!) at the moment if I didn't!

I go to bed around 2am and get up at 7.30. I never feel tired and think this is normal, I was shocked in work a few weeks ago when girls said they go to bed at 9pm and 10pm. i thought that was really early.

We work until 6pm and dont get home til around 6.45 or 7 some nights. I couldnt have dinner, wind down and be in bed 3 hours after getting home.

I've always coped well on 5.5hrs sleep and oh is the same.

That's our problem. H and I both need LOADS of sleep (thankfully we are similar). We get the kids to bed by 7.30, then make dinner, and we like to be in bed for 9.30, up at 7am. We're still exhausted often ?

Our families think we're really unreasonable for not being in touch with them more but, after all the jobs have been done, we realistically only have an hour together every day.

gosh i cant believe how late everyone goes to bed! 10:30 is a late night for me, lol.

I am up usually around 6:30am with the baby and several times through the night, but tbh, before I had kids I would always go to bed at that time also, unless I was out doing something.

Do you think you can have too much sleep? my sister was staying with her husband a fortnight ago and she is in early stages of pregnancy. She was knackered at 8pm and needed to go to bed.

oh and I didnt want to risk disturbing her so we went to bed at 11pm. I was knackered every day in work yet I was getting 3 hours sleep more than normal. I was seriously like a zombie.

It took me 2 nights of doing this to be able to wind down sufficiently to be able to sleep as soon as i went to bed. for the remaining 4 days, I was shattered constantly

If you aren't going to bed until 12 and you're up at 7.30 to 8, you probably aren't getting 8 hours sleep - more like 7.

I should go to bed about 10 but its normally more like 10.30. I then read so its after 11 before I get to sleep. The alarm goes off at 6.30. Thats not enough for me - I could do with another hour, I just don't want to go to bed cos that makes going to work come that much faster.

I generally make myself go to bed at 10.30, read for a bit and then try and get to sleep for about 11. Mr Dooby comes up to bed later so i've got a chance to get to sleep before he gets to bed. He can fall asleep virtually straightaway and then starts snoring which used to keep me awake for ages cos i take much longer to get comfy, unwind and drop off.

I go to bed between 10.30 and 11, and get up at 6 since I started my new job. I don't think this is enough sleep really. I sleep longer at the weekends (until about 9) but then I go to bed later.

Edited to say that I don't make myself go to bed early, as I can't - I have some problems with sleeping and sometimes lie awake for 3 or 4 hours before I sleep.

It totally depends. i'm another who needs a good 8 hours, 9 preferably. i do, however, sometimes struggle to make myself go to bed esp since having a baby. evenings are usually the only time i get without her, so i end up watching tv / reading / hitching until later than i would like.

BB is helping, bizarrely, as i've started going to bed as soon as it's over. so 10 or 11, depending on the day.

and if i've really not had enough, i'll get up with cub but keep us both in pjs, then as soon as she starts showing signs of tiredness we both get straight back into bed for a nap.
