what to buy a 10yo boy?

SillyWrong, 16 November, 2014 at 22:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

For one reason and another we've not seen W's god son for about 18 months (there are good reasons for this which are irrelevant to this question) but we're going to see him for his birthday this week - it's so hard to know what to buy him for a gift, as he'll have grown/changed so much since we last saw him! So .. Those of you with sons/nephews/godsons etc .. What are ten year old boys in to!? What's a fail proof gift!? He's big in to football but without knowing what he already has, it's hard to get a football related gift!?

Do you know who he supports, you could buy him tickets to a football match or try and get him to be a mascot for a local team. My family are big Rochdale fans and when my brother was 10, he ran onto the pitch with the players, got a meal with it too.

My little cousin is totally into sciencey things, what about the kind of thing you can get to do science experiments in the kitchen (think vinegar & bicarbonate of soda volcano)? Or something for catching and and examining insects in the garden? Although November isn't the time to use something like that.. a Horrible Histories book?

Other than that I second the lego! Can't go wrong with lego.

ETA: Cousin is also totally into football but I wouldn't personally get something football related as tickets to a match/mascot might not go down well with the parents and any other memorabilia I find a bit naff..

This! ^^ I have a 35 year old who wants a remote control car for xmas. As well as rechargeable batteries for the walkie talkies he got last year!

Could you take some of the guesswork out by talking to his parents? Bet he's got a long list!

Our neighbour's 10 y/o has just come back from the science museum in London and is obsessed with all things sciencey. Anything from here would be right up his street. http://www.sciencemuseumshop.co.uk/christmas/budding_scientist_1

I know he's also asked for a magic kit, binoculars, and the Guiness world records book!

My nephew is nearly 10 and he's massively into Minecraft, Lego, Xbox & Playstation. He loves football too and supports Chelsea so anything Chelsea related he loves.

Does he have a kindle/play station or the like do you know? If so, kindle/play station vouchers always go down well with my 9yo. Otherwise, mine craft or Lego or a remote controlled helicopter seem to be the in thing right now. Or, randomly, a ukulele. Every kid in my son's year wants one for Christmas!!

I bought some Lego for H2B's 3yo nephew for Xmas (a simple one) and they had minecraft lego in the shop. Is that classed as minecraft or lego?? (I also thought Minecraft was an online game....)

Minecraft is an online game (my son plays it on his tablet, and xbox), but you can get toys, books and clothing related to it.

If he has a team he avidly supports a club shirt is usually a winner.

My nephew is 10 - he's very much in to Minecraft too. I've just bought him two Minecraft t-shirts from Argos both with 20% off.
