What to do in London on your own - evenings?

Dr Doo.Little, 13 September, 2008 at 19:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

I'm in London on Tuesday and Wednesday night on my own, I'm staying near Stratford tube station so just a short tube journey to Covent Garden, Oxford Street.

I'm sick of staying stuck in hotels on my own, especially when I go to London, it seems such a waste. Should I see a show? Go out for a drink in Covent Garden?

Would you say it was safe for me to get back to my hotel late on the tube if I go and see a show? I'm only asking because I live in Newcastle and would never use the metro after 9pm on my own.

I use public transport a lot at night- it feels much safer than the metro (I'm a Sunderland girl originally so know the metro well), probably just down to sheer volume of people. I don't know Stratford though so can't advise you on that.

Covent Garden is a great place to be on your own as you can wander around seeing the street entertainment, plus there are good shops in Longacre. I'm not into shows but I love plays- there are tons of theatres around there so plenty to choose from. The National Gallery is close and is free to get into- not sure what time it closes but that would be a good thing to do.

I would go to one of the cheap show ticket booths in Leicester Square and see what you can go and see - you should have quite a bit of choice considering you will only want 1 ticket.

Billy Elliott was awesome when we saw it....

I live in London & happily use the tube at night. Covent Garden is great for pottering around on your own. If you like a glass of wine check out the Crusting Pipe which is in the under cover bit of CG. There are often (pretty good) buskers performing there & you can sit with a glass of wine with no one batting an eyelid.

At the moment the South Bank is pretty good - there's free entertainment of all sorts of things next to the National Theatre. I saw an insect circus there a couple of weeks ago ? There are also bands, dancers & circus performers. I think it's only going on for a couple more weeks. Check out the giant green furniture there too! Seriously. I walk over Waterloo bridge on my way home from work & that's my favourite bit of the walk

There's a new show about the Eurovision song contest that's just opened if you're into naff. I'd highly recommend Avenue Q too.

Enjoy your time in London. I'm being packed off to Swindon for the week....

I work in central London but live in Essex and travel back home quite lot fairly regularly - I change from the tube on to the rail line at Stratford and I'd say the tube lines into and the station itself are both pretty safe - it's always busy, even at 10 / 11pm mainly because the line out to Essex is so busy and Stratford is the connection point from the Jubilee Line / Canary Wharf...

Stratford itself is another thing - I personally wouldn't walk around the area at all after early evening. I say that as someone who grew up not far from the area and still has friends and family working in the area, that said, the taxi rank outside the station is usually full of black taxis.

There is, or at least was, a theatre in Stratford - it used to put on some decent productions so might be worth checking that out. There is still a cinema in Stratford, there is also Canary Wharf is a couple of stops on the Jubilee Line and you wouldn't look out of place eating or drinking alone there. The shopping malls at Canary Wharf are also really good although I think they close about 6pm mid week?!

Failing that you could call a Hitched meet of internet weirdos!
