What to do when?!?

SoontobeMahoney, 10 January, 2012 at 21:05 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi everyone

This is my first post, but it definitley wont be my last! I can see myself spending lots and lots of time on here before my wedding day!

I got engaged in November and am planning to get married in August 2013.

My boyfriend and I started to look at venues on Saturday and we both fell in love with the first place we looked at. It is a venue that is close to where we used to live and we always used to pass and admire it. We know we were going to love it, but thought it was going to be well out of our budget. We loved it even more in the flesh and the price wasn't too much of a shocker (a little more then we had originally budgeted, but not completely unrealistic!)- so, we have made a provisional booking and are taking our parents to have a look and pay a deposit in a couple of weeks.

Although our wedding is 18 months away, I cannot stop thinking about the day and all of the details. I want to get really stuck in to sorting things out, but feel that it is too soon!

How long did it take you to organise your wedding?

Are the next 18 months going to fly by and should I be getting things organised? Or, shall I leave it until the end of the year/beginning of next now that we have our date set!

Sorry, this ended up being a long post!!

I would do things as you can, some of the big stuff like TOG etc if you book and pay deposit they hold the price, also means you can have a good look around and get what you want for the best price. If your paying deposits I would take out some insurance - just to be safe! We moved our date from 2013 to Sept 2012 so instead of nealry two years from when we booked I only had 10 months which has quickly gone to 8! Warning it does take over your life !

    Welcome to Hitched ?

I'm also getting married August '13

Consider starting to look for a TOG (photographer) ASAP, they well known/popular ones are already filling up for 2013 and August is one of the most popular wedding months.

So far I have my reception venue (which includes food, table linen, disco), car and tog sorted but this is all being done via friends - our reception venue is a local pub/restaurant that our friends own, car is being supplied by friends that own a taxi firm who also have wedding cars on the side and my tog is a friend (with lots of wedding experience!)

If I had no friends in business I would probably only have the tog booked by now as I wanted a tog sorted as soon as I had a venue and date

I've been thinking about this too. We decided in October there to set a date. I started searching for a venue and had it booked in about 3-4 weeks (doesnt really count as I've scrapped my date and have just booked a new venue/date about a month ago).

In October I went to enquire about dresses and bought one then spur of the moment.

In November I booked my photographer, got my flower girl dresses. And from now and then I've just done loads of research into what I want. Met with cakemakers etc to get an idea of what is expected. Went to wedding fayres.

I've now got 14.5 months and don't know whether to just slow it down for a few months to let myself digest my choices (on asthetics) and if I am still confident in my choices, start ordering.

But I also think I shouldn't leave everything until there is 12 months or under then feel panicked. I fancy going to get my wedding rings soon but I'm aware how much your mind can change in 12 mnths +.

Hmmm. For you I'd say just book your big things, then start looking into cake, flowers, hair and make up etc (things that will need booking but arent such a big deal as venue etc), then after all that is sorted you can worry about centre pieces, shoes etc.

Hi and welcome to the site ?

We've been engaged for 2yrs and we booked our venue 2 weeks after getting engaged. We booked so early as we have booked at the venue which was voted number 1 best place to marry in Northern Ireland, so we wanted to make sure our date was secure (couldn't believe that back in January 2010 they had already had interest from another 2 couples for our date, so we paid our deposit and confirmed.) We also have our band booked, registrar confirmed - just gotta give notice later in the year, cars booked, harpist, catering and just starting to look at BM dresses now. Its never too early to start looking about, ya never know what bargains you'll pick up! x
