What to do with engagement ring during ceremony?

Caraboo, 1 June, 2012 at 18:29 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hullo!

I know that traditionally, a bride will move her engagement ring to her right hand for the ceremony, so the wedding ring goes onto an empty finger and later, the engagement ring is returned to the left hand to "protect" the wedding band.

That's all fine and dandy, except I've just had my engagement ring reduced so it fits my ring finger really well, but it won't fit on my right hand ring finger!

I can't be the first person to come across this problem, so what do you suggest? Just leave it off completely for the wedding?

Thanks!

F

Can a bridesmaid wear/hold on to it during the ceremony?

Mine doesn't fit on any finger other than the one it's supposed to go on! I'm planning on keeping it in a pouch when it's returned from being cleaned and having my MOH look after it until I want to put it back on after the ceremony.

Give it to a bridesmaid. I think that's what I did first time round. This time it's just us 2 for the ceremony so I'll either give it to OH to look after, or lock it in the hotel room.

I didn't take mine off. Just left it on, OH put the wedding band on and then after the ceremony I swapped them so they were the right way round. Didn't even know there was an etiquette to this!!

Some places (especially churches) will insist that you take it off - if there are any other rings on your ring finger, it might be a sign that you're already married! (I guess this is mostly from the days before engagement rings were so common)

Mine was a civil and the registrar didn't say anything about it so seems they weren't that bothered!

I worry when I don't have mine so don't want to leave it with anyone ?

I've had the florist put an extra loop of ribbon on to my bouquet that I can tie my ring to so it's with me somewhere I can see during the ceremony Smiley smile

These little things are what the bridesmaids are for! I'm sure one of them will love to wear it for you...Smiley smile

I popped mine into the little finger of my right hand before walking down the aisle, and back into my ring finger after the ceremony. Worked fine.

I have a similar problem as my brother thoughtfully dropped a brick on the equivelant finger on my right hand when I was 7 and it has been fatter ever since!

My engagement ring is the most beautiful thing I have ever owned, so I was considering wearing it on a very fine chain around my neck as my wedding jewellery, anyone else considering this?

I gave mine to my Mum and she gave it back after the ceremony.
