What veil do I go for?

Lilacbouquet, 13 April, 2017 at 18:09 Posted on Planning 0 8

My dress arrived so I went to try it on to make sure everything was okay, check the length for shoe height and see what accessories to go for.

It is classed as a ball gown on Maggie Sottero's website, and as an A-line on another website. Initially I was hoping for a long veil such as chapel length, but when I put this with my dress the shop said it was too long a small my dress is patterned all over.

i then tried on a shoulder length which doesn't suit me and wasn't really what I wanted, and then tried on which I assume is a fingertip length as it went just past my bum.

this was all they let me try on as they said I should decide when I have my first fitting (which for the record I'm thinking of using a recommended independent lady who did my auntie-in-law-to-be wedding dress anyway).

The general consensus was that a slightly shorter version would suit my dress better but as I didn't get to try on one I am unsure. I would assume that would be an elbow length??

I am thinking about taking the pictures of me in my lovely dress to another wedding shop to get their opinion and potentially buy one from somewhere else. The last couple of times I've been into this shop I've felt a nuisance so I'm not too concerned about getting everything from the same shop.

what have you lovely ladies bought or been recommended for your style of dress???

My dress has a plain skirt and I wanted a cathedral length veil.... my shop is run by someone who used to be a dress designer and she also does all the alterations- she advised that any length is fine if that's what I wanted but of it's a dress with lots of detail then better to go for a simple veil i.e. Little decoration, just a plain , thin veil..... the length is a personal preference. Yes, you won't see all the detail but presumably the veil will come off later in the day anyway and you then get the best of both worlds, the veil you want and everyone wowing over the back detail when it's uncovered in the evening...

There's no such thing as a veil that's "too long" IMO Smiley winking

My Nan rocked a Cathedral length veil with a ballerina length dress back in the day!! Smiley smile

I have an all over lace ballgown (so quite busy) and I'm wearing a Cathedral Length lace accent veil.

If you like the long length then go for it - you could always opt for Raw Edge so that it doesn't compete with the dress Smiley smile

These are some piccies which I hope will help Smiley smile

Is a long veil likely to get in the way of a long evening such as hugs etc and then make me want to take it off? I think a long one would look good in my church, but an elbow one would probs look just as good and maybe not get in the way?

Here are a couple of pics of me in my dress with a veil that I tried on there (I'm not having that particular one)

    Wow Mizzi Smiley heart

I wore my long one from 10am-12am so like 14 hours lol. I briefly took it off so my cousin could try it on but that was all.

It pulled a little when I was hugged, but I just kept saying "arms under the veil please!" and that helped haha

Honestly, my main issue was the wind. If you're inside though, you'll barely notice it Smiley smile

FWIW I think a cathedral length veil would look perfect with that dress, perhaps a raw edge rather than satin though?

Thanks Stephisaur, and congratulations on getting married, hope it all went well for you!

Haha that's worth bearing in mind.

Yes are inside for most of it with hay bales outside for people that want air etc.

I haven't tried a cathedral length, that would be awesome! I think you're right about the satin edge though, I wasn't so keen on that bit it made it more rigid, a raw edge or even a light lace might be more fluid. I was wondering about sequins or pearls occasionally on it to match my dress, but maybe a sparkly edge would work better to see my dress through.

I've got an all over lace mermaid dress with chapel train and a cathedral length veil and I looove how it looks, while my FMIL thinks it hides the dress. I'm planning to wear it for the ceremony/pics then take it off (So I don't trip!).

Your dress looks gorgeous, but I think that particular veil doesn't work, I'd say go for a veil longer than the dress with a plain/pencil edge.

Also worth considering a drop veil (like kate middleton) rather than one bunched up on a comb, when the blusher is down it hides less of the back. The flip side is that when the blusher is back it hides more of the dress. I've gone for a single tier veil so less of the back is hidden, but it means I have to have an updo to allow the veil to fully 'anchor' in place.

Thank you Bacchant! I think I am swaying more for a cathedral length but may end up taking it off say at the dancing, which is about 5 hours worth of wearing anyway. The up side to this is that I can show off the back of my dress without a veil (regardless of length) and it will probably be a bit cooler that way anyway. It is a June wedding and I am hoping for sunshine ?
