What was the main criteria for your reception venue?

Karen1980, 28 September, 2009 at 06:33 Posted on Planning 0 4

You may have seen my post yesterday about changeing venue.

Well I went to see it and the gardens were beautiful.

There was a bit of a walk for the guests from the car park to the terrace nad then back to the main hosue for the meal - wasnt too much of a problem and we would get some nice photos's

BUT.

The room for the sit down meal wasnt too nice and then for the part in the evening the bar would be upstairs along with the toilets and downstairs in a side (but open room) the disco with access to tables outside.

Im thinking people will either hang out in the bar upstairs or outside at the tables with the disco empty. This is really putting me off the venue Smiley surprise(

The current one we have overlooks a public playing fields but always seems empty and the venue have assured us they never have any problems.

The bar, meal and later the disco are all in one place so it facilitates it to be more socialable however the venue doesnt have the same wow externally at the one I mentioned at the top of the post. ?

we did decide when we booked this that we would stop in the country park on the way to get some nice tree woodland photos etc.. so we would still get lovely photos but I guess the guests wouldnt get to appreciate that part of it.

So what to do!!!

    Morning Karen

My humble opinion is that it basically boils down to; guests dancing in the disco and enjoying the facilities Vs. an externally WOW building with facilities you are not happy with. The guests are only going to see the building and get the WOW factor once and that's when they first see the building, on the other hand, using the other building means the guests will be able to enjoy the bar and dancing all evening and won't even remember the outside of the building!

    That's what I think!!

    Hi Karen -

Tricky one but I think I would go with the facilities - as that's where your guests would be spending most of the time.

I have to agree with Mel and 22tango on this. You obviously aren't convinced about the one you just went to see so I wouldn't even consider it if I were you.

But in answer to your question, my main criteria were:

Rooms for the guests to stay, price, size of rooms, photo opportunities and suitability to what we wanted really.

RaeF - Mel - Tango - You are right im not convinced because the sit down meal room isnt so nice and the logistics of the 2 rooms in my opinion isnt good. I went to a lovely wedding last year and it was across 2 rooms and alot of people including myself were in the quite room for some time meaning the party was a little mis jointed.
Im thinking if we went with the posh place we'd have people outside and people upstairs with the food and the drink. People would only go into the disco room to specifically dance and how often is that? from the parties ive been to people mainly get caught up dancing on the way to somewhere as they walk past the dance floor ec.. which the place we have booked is great for.
We can get some really nice pictures on the way at the park too..
I knew when I saw how reasonable the price was for such a wow place there was a draw back!

    Hi Karen

I ummed and arghhed about our venue for ages ......Its stunning has a 'mahoosive' wow factor, all in one venue but the things that put me off were cost of rooms as it is a 5* hotel the cost of rooms are reflected and i wasnt able to negotiate a discount, also the evening reception was in a seperate complex and to have my hog roast was a compromise of walking all the guests over to the terrace of the main hotel or having it in the courtyardno views....In the end i settled on the venue and paid deposit as i put the venue/views over everything else as i was worried people would remain on the terrace away from the disco ....subsequently my parents have negotiated the Hotel Bistro for use as the evening party at an extra cost which im delighted with as it has its own terrace....

I would go with what you feel most comfortable with, a room can easily be dressed up with drapes chair covers, sashs etc to give it the wow factor and facilities obviously play a huge part maybe worth visiting both venues again when they are dressed up for a wedding...
