What wedding party do you have?

mummymrs2b, 10 February, 2012 at 17:37 Posted on Planning 0 12

We have me the bride, groom, then 1 best man, 2 bridesmaids (possibly 3 yet) but that's it. Was talking last night when oh asked about ushers. Silly question what are ushers for and do you need them? Oh said we have to have a usher to tell people where to sit. What's your opinion? Who are you having? X

I thiNk ushers are quite a good idea, they can show the bride's family to seats on the left and groom's to the right (traditionally), hand out order of service sheets, maybe round up the necessary people for any formal photographs you might have because the photographer might not know who is who...um can't think of anything else. We've got best man, 2 ushers, 3 adult/teenage bridesmaids and 2 flower girls. I wouldn't normally have chosen to have a big entourage of bridesmaids but I have 4 nieces plus a good friend and so it was all or nothing!

We have: Best man (h2b's brother) 2 ushers (his best friends) 3 adult bridesmaids (my best friend, sister and stepsister)

Ushers' duties: well, what Nicalf08 said. Optional extra: well, h2b and I were having a discussion with one of the ushers about the idea of a bride & groom having people to drink on their behalf. H2b basically goes "that'd be you then" to usher, who went, "nah, I want a clear head so I can keep an eye on things for you". Purely voluntary on his part, and I am touched that he has offered.

I think ushers are generally for helping get people to the correct seats. Not sure what else they do. OH is having just 1 plus his best man, I am just having my bridesman.

    We're only having...

    Bride

    Groom

    Best Man

    My Son

    Bridesmaids x 2

Even then my son hasn't a specific role, just the same suit as my partner and best man.

My partner is one of 10, I have only a couple of family members coming. The whole 'Bride or groom?' question and separation in the service by an usher would only have highlighted this!

I think you'll do fine without one, plus you'll save £100 at least too ?

We had 1 best man, 1 man of honour (my best mates a boy), 3 bridesmaids, 2 flower girls and 4 ushers. The ushers all had jobs to do but wer did have a big wedding 140 day guests, 250 night- so they helped seat people at the church, handed out order of service, set up a refreshments table outside the church 10 mins before end of service, handed out champagne at church, then at venue they ensured evryone had a drink, ushered them to their seats when it was meal time, took round the guest books for signing etc etc. They were so so helpful on the day and all without being asked, real stars!
